there's finals for many people, exams and work commitments people are getting sucked into outside of the game. heck, even I am finding it hard to find game time.

Agreed. That's currently my issue, I've only got two weeks left of school and papers are due, photographs need to be shot and printed, all sorts of stuff. There's always a lull in most MMOs around this time of year. It'll pick up, and heavily so, during the summer.

It's not that hard provided you have a good idea - Might just be you're looking for something that's not in the city (Coeurl Skin, etc.) Also need to escort someone but wouldn't mind a traveling partner. Plenty hooks you can use within the game's very own lore to do that, but it requires a commitment to RPing outside of the cities.

This, yes. I've been doing this the past year before my LS RP activity became too intense and I had to abandon open RP. Creating "RP quests" is a great way to have adventurous roleplay with strangers.

However know that not everyone will respond positively to this. I still remember that guy who, upon hearing that my character was looking for her lost child, just told her to leave a petition at the Leve Counter ("someone will pick it up eventually") and to scram out of the adventurers' guild because civilians like her were not allowed. It broke my heart IC and OOC because I thought hiring adventurers was always a great way to break the ice with strangers.

If you stumble on this kind of people, don't let them discourage you!

To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." -- N.C.

I'll just go ahead and outline how I did any kind of RP in this game:

Step 1 - Join the RPC and discuss a character concept.

Step 2 - Make a character, level it on up while looking about for RP.

Step 3 - The forum actually sort of didn't work for me, so I poked people at random and asked to RP.

Step 4 - I asked about people's FCs to get ideas about which one to join.

Step 5 - Meet someone I knew in passing from another MMO years ago and join their FC.

Step 6 - Hardly ever RP with anyone in that FC because schedules don't line up and I made a damn difficult character to relate to. This is my fault.

Step 7 - Meet someone through that FC's IC Linkshell and RP with that person's group a lot.

Step 8 - Part as good friends with the group I was in and join the group I RP with all the time.

Step 9 - Play the most frustrating character in the FC on an IC level and try to be the nicest dude on an OOC level until present day.

This process took me the in the ballpark of two or three months to get to Step 5 and about four or five months after that to hit step 8. In the meantime, I sat back and enjoyed the game and RP'd with random folks while I drank in lore.

Honestly, I sort of like that time without the characters being connected strongly. It helps me talk to random folks and refine the characters so I can get the shape and mindset set where it feels right to me.

To be frank, I don't think your problems are stemming from your name. I've poked you three times that I recall and added you to my friend list, and I've never managed to pin you down for RP. Sad

Everything else I have to say has been said by others here in ways better than I could put it. So I'll just say, as far as I know, there are two ways to find role-play...

1. The dreaded "scheduled" RP. I'm sorry, but I have to ask--why are you so against this? How do you think RP happens? I'm all for things happening organically, but how is RP going to happen without some OOC communication to make sure you're online and IC at the same time, in the same place? If you want help, not only do you have to help yourself, but you have to let others help you. You keep asking for help here, but then you turn it down because we can't help you unless we plan for a time to meet you. What are you hoping for? That we'll run around every zone searching for your character and chase you down for role-play? I'm not trying to be condescending so I apologize if it comes off that way, I'm just genuinely curious what you are expecting.

2. Walk-up RP. This seems to be more in line with what you're wanting. But the sad truth is if you want walk-up RP, you have to initiate it. Initiating it doesn't mean standing some place people are role-playing. It does not mean emoting to yourself and hoping they'll notice you. It does not mean vaguely mentioning another character in your emote and hoping they'll see and address you. Find someone who is IC, march right up to them (or send an OOC /tell asking to join them first if you prefer), and address their character directly IC.

To be honest, I feel like I'm at least running around some of the major RP hubs a lot, either OOCly, or ICly.

I... don't think I've -ever- seen the OP's character IC. I think I saw him once, but he was running.

1. Edit your player search info, set the comment to say "Roleplayer. Walk-up friendly. /tell friendly". If you're tell friendly, that is.
2. Renata, one of my chars, only briefly interacted with Warren last night at the Grindstone, and let me tell you, I was oocly nervous about approaching him! I get nervous approaching ANYONE off of here...but what works for me is I usually just send a /tell saying "Just saying hi from the RPC!" It might not get an rp out of it, but it's just letting people know "Hi! I'm here!"
3. I have many of the same social reservations as you, and have been on Balmung about as long as you as well. Biggest lesson I learned in the first week? No one is really going to jump all over your arse (can I say arse?) just for sending a tell saying "Hi!"
4. I can't even count the number of people on my friends list thanks to another favorite OOC pastime of mine....complimenting people. Yes, that's right. I'm sure a few of the fine people on here can tell you that they've gotten a tell from me just saying something "That armor is awesome" or "Ooo a shiny weapon!".
5. Even if the rp is only a few sentences in length, it can still leave a lasting impression. On my first day on Balmung, Eorla was warned by Gwannes that she shouldn't trust someone with a feather in his hat. About a week later Reddard asked her to fart (no joke) near Edda and Gwannes to cause a distraction (she declined, aghast). So now, Gwannes and Reddard have both made a lasting impression on my char. They might not remember Eorla, but Eorla remembers them, and that can be a lead-in to a future encounter. They were peculiar enough as to not be forgotten.
6. You don't like to plan. You need to get over that or you will only ever have short, fleeting moments of RP.

I am a tremendously shy person in real life. My shyness is the main reason I enjoy RP, though. To compound this, I made my character naturally annoying outgoing. When I RP, I'm someone entirely different. It's a nice escape, and it's a ton of fun to put myself in the shoes of another personality.

I don't think of it as "I am trying to roleplay with other roleplayers". I think of it as "Allister is trying to meddle in affairs not his own".

You can't expect RP to just fall into your lap; you gotta make the effort to involve yourself. If you can't make the effort, make your character make the effort. That's the cool thing about RP.

If you play an anti-social character, you will have to schedule your rp, because ICly it just wont make sense.
For instance Zy'dala hates being around large groups of people. So i rarely have her interact with people in the quicksand. Its just how things are. You have to reach out, no one is gonna cater to you.

I dunno if anyone said, but with Heavensward coming up, I think a lot of people (rpers included), are dungeoning in preparation for the expansion.

It's usually never you, guy~ So don't worry.

If I can be super honest, When I had some time off from work, I was in the Quicksand looking for random rp for like... four days straight. I never saw you... and if your search info says you are an rper, I'd rp with you~

Hang in there! Sometimes I wait for an hour or two until someone shows up or I gather the guts to go up to someone. The waiting is worth it, I promise. I'm sorry that it makes you sad when people don't rp with you. I know that feeling, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I'll look out for you, buddy~!

You want RP and are concerned with cliques? Look for the MSCRP tag. We will RP with literally anyone who wants to RP with us. We're small, we're bored, and no one likes us enough to form a clique with us. Just a disclaimer though: we tend to lend our RP to a sense of realism. We play dirty characters in dirty situations that aren't full of heroism and/or villainy. Just some dudes doing what they do. We aren't big on playing house or diving into Anime Friendship Adventure Town.

If that's not something you're interested in, keep on steppin'. Some people are into it, some people aren't, and we have thick skin. But we are here and we are open to RP with anyone who wants to try us out.

So now no one can say the RPC won't RP with new people.

The problem, from my experience, is:

1. Some RPers are, in fact, exclusive and elitist. Which is no good. Sorry. It's true. Cliques are totally real and they discourage RP in a lot of situations. Stop RPing in your house 100% of the time, and stop RPing in /party when you're in public. No one is going to murder you for RPing in /say on the heaviest RP server, you cowards.

and 2. A lot of new RPers walk into the Quicksand and emote paragraphs to Momodi and weird everyone out and then cry that no one will talk to them. Try talking to a person. I'd use an opening like "Hello" or something of that nature.

I'd like to add that I read no previous posts and was told about this thread by someone who gave me a brief synopsis of the problem. By brief, I mean "New RPers don't like that there are a lot of cliques." So, I hastily wrote this out in a sleep-deprived blur of apathy, giggling childishly to myself the whole time. It's 5:30 a.m. Read this, don't read this, no one cares. Night night.

Addendum: There's this bizarre current that courses through every single roleplaying community that walking up to a stranger is somehow intrusive. What are you interrupting that's so gravely important? Have we seriously all forgotten that a ton of us are grownups playing pretend?

I've also noticed, in my years sitting mostly outside of these kinds of gatherings, that there is an expectation of being immediately welcomed to anything and everything. Roleplayers take great pains to make sure that egos are never bruised, "drama" (poorly defined colloquialism that it is) is kept to a minimum, and conflict always has to end in some mutually agreeable fashion. It all speaks of fear to me.

Mostly of some kind of unfair persecution, which...I mean, I've been playing makebelieve for more of my life than I haven't been, and I can say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we as a "community" have pretty much earned every bit of derision that anyone may have "suffered". We're, as an aggregate, thin-skinned, whiney, attention seeking brats. The thing is: You don't have to just be this aggregate. You can walk up to strangers without interrupting anything, because this is a social activity by it's very nature. You don't have to pad egos, and try to find mutually agreeable endings to conflicts. You don't even have to specifically engineer conflicts, really.

I guess the trick would be for everyone to stop being so bizarrely controlling over every little minute detail that they experience when it comes to a community oriented activity like roleplaying, and actually accept what comes naturally, rather than continuing with this cycle of behavior that sees complaints like this pop up over and over again.

Or don't. Like my BAE up there said: Do whatever you want, we really don't care.

Fake Edit: I fucking called you BAE.

Fake Edit 2: No, seriously. Walk up to us whenever.

I love when I see people RPing in the field, and sometimes I'll stick my nose into it.  I've never gotten anything but positive reactions when doing this.  I suspect this is because people who RP in public places are generally open to being seen and even "audience participation."

But I also try to get a feel for whether or not the RP is private-ish or semi-serious because I think spontaneous intrusion into an RP can be disruptive.  You may want to RP something in the field without making it an "open" RP or having it get derailed into a "nice to meet you I'm so&so."

I've had a few really memorable spontaneous field RPs.  I think the best ones come from you kind of "spotting" RPers who don't appear to be in the middle of anything and sparking something up with them.  I had a really fun RP with a few people in Coerthas while waiting for a FATE to spawn and it's still one of my favourites.  And another was when me and some of my company-mates were going to the Stone Vigil IC and a man who overheard us gave us some nice foreboding warnings about the horrible things he'd seen in there.

I almost always enjoy the flavour you get from a third party intruding on a field RP.  I've legitimately never been in a situation where it felt invasive, and I think that's mostly because the RP community generally has a good sense of what's appropriate.
