I'm in an odd sort of situation with this sort of thing. I'm certainly for trying strange and interesting ideas and approaches - which fits with the "do what you want" camp - but I also think it's a good idea to try and meld that idea as closely as you can to the lore as it's presented. Play around with the gray area, but don't dismiss the stuff that's been straight up said in the game or by the Lore team.

Gogon would be a bit of an... extreme case of this, I guess? I took a lot of liberties with what he did with the Soul Crystals he hunted down... but I also tried to keep his mad science from defying anything that was said in the lore. Then again, I constantly worry about what other people think when it comes to stuff like this... which both helps and hinders. Blush

Jeebus as this thread goes on I keep finding out I have way more pet peeves than I thought!!!!!!

Previously mentioned
*When people make character altering decisions for me .
*Take control of my character.
*Being ignored when you walk up to a group openly RPing in public and try to join in if only just briefly, to add more realism to the world.

Newly Realized
*People who try force relationships.
*People whose only goal is ERP.
*People who snub people who don't know much lore and don't try to help them.
*People who don't know lore that refuse help from people trying to help them.
*People who try to make this game into a gritty Game Of Thrones world, when it's clearly a high fantasy world.
*The fact that I now have more pet peeves than I realized.
*Spelling elitists (People make mistakes, okay.)
*People who take OOC offense to IC things.
*People without a sense of humor.

Yeah I blame this thread for this. XD

Playing some character, maybe on Balmung, maybe not.
(Or am I hiding in the shadow next to you, maybe even posing as your best friend?)

Maybe Polonius was talkin to himself there?

Even I do when I need a professional opinion...

While there's no shortage of soliloquies, that's definitely not one of them.

The fact that it's true is what makes it funny. '3'

As for the thread, most of mine have already been said, but I have to reiterate the whole book-page-for-one-hair-flip-and-a-hello problem.  In a game with no speech bubbles chat scroll needs to be budgeted in public RP, and I'd rather that space be taken up with conversation than descriptions through emote on what your shoes look like, despite them being right there on your character.
(of course this is mainly for the more 'lax RP like sitting by the campfire, or on the beach enjoying the waves. It's a different thing if shenanigans are afoot.)

Edit: Another one that I just remembered: Unless you want your character's accent to be comically unintelligible, don't make your characters dialogue horrifically unreadable with more apostrophes than letters. Some characters I've met over the years had very interesting bios, but I never got to experience those characters' awesomeness e'c's 'ere 'ext 'lwa's look'd 'ike 'is.

In a play riddled with displays of wit that are anything but brief, it definitely casts some suspicion on the usefulness of the advice.

I don't think it's really up to Shakespeare to decide how true it is.  The reason it's so widely quoted is because people see truth in it.  But anyways, this is a bit of a derail.

The irony is that Verad would probably see value in the saying. And he is a long-winded sumbitch himself.

A couple more came to mind:

1 - People who include smileys in their RP lines (they're rare, but they're there. Sthap!).

2 - The hipocrisy with which people wave the "lore" flag. I get told that RPing the MSQ is against the lore, that RPing a WHM is against and lore and that the devs said so and so.... This couldn't be furthest from the truth to me. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Those who respect the lore the most are those who RP being the WoL and the job he/she is.

I'm not against those who decide to disregard the MSQ and who the game tells us we are, but I think it's time we acknowledge that deciding to NOT be the Warrior of Light IS a form of lore-bending. The game says you are the WoL, so if you decide to be any average joe, you are not following what the lore tells you. And that is FINE, of course, but for this same reason, it is also fine to decide to RP a WoL.

Lore and "devs said so" really shouldn't be used as weapons against anyone, because we all are bending lore a bit someway, no matter in what shape or form. So let's stop considering one side or the other inferior or disruptive or more lore-breaking than the other. Let us embrace the fact that for the sake of enjoying RP, lore needs to be bent someway, and that it's nobody's fault, only of how the game's story was set up (FFXI for example didn't have this Chosen One issue, the adventurer was just an adventurer who happened to be at the right place at the right moment. It was never a case of "you have this special power, save us!", but more a case of "Oh, an adventurer. Just what I needed. Do this for me!").

To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." -- N.C.

Is it fine to RP the WoL? Sure. Could it be thought of as inconsiderate to roleplay such an exclusive/special role in walk-up and general public RP? Definitely. Nobody really cares about what people do in more private circles. Still, the simple fact is that running around the Quicksand dropping the fact that you're Hydaelyn's chosen/the Azure Dragoon/Minfilia's ex isn't gonna win you a whole lot of longtime roleplay partners.

As for the lore-breaking bit, you could say that, by the same token, anybody who roleplays the WoL is doing so even when somebody else could also be roleplaying the WoL, thus contradicting the ingame lore that there's only one. I think breaking the lore that says you're the chosen one is far more acceptable than breaking the lore that says it's not possible for a seventeen year-old to be the Godsbow and Azure Dragoon at the same time.

roleplay?
