I'm looking for any information I can find on Ala Mhigan Shamanism for.. Reasons

Anyway, the info seem a bit sparse and scattered. I have the lore book, but haven't really been able to find much about it there.

So if anyone happen to be sitting on some lore regarding Ala Mhigan shamans, I would be more than grateful! I know I'll probably have to keep some things vague as there's doubtlessly a lot of holes in what we may actually know, but I'd rather build as much as I can on actual lore.

I can tell you that you're not alone in your search Tongue. But I've been RPing my character as a Shaman for a bit now with just some ideas I've come up with mixed in with what little lore there is available.

I don't think this exists or if it does it's not yet been eluded to or expanded upon.

I dwelled on it a moment and thought perhaps they had conjurers but...again, here not likely considering the elementals disposition regarding Ala Mhigans. They certainly wouldn't have had access to Sharlayan Astromancy.

I perused the lorebook and indeed the Ala Mhigans are a very martial, very physical battle hardened people. There's little access to fertile soil and that which exists was fought over brutally. Food and territory in Gyr Abania went to the man/group that wielded the biggest club.

If you wanted to go this route I would suggest a medicinal healer, mayhaps an alchemist of sorts but with a more natural ingredient 'mortar and pestle' hook and flair. There was a snippet about Ala Mhigans crushing the horns of beasts and mixing it into tea for healing properties but no comment about how effective it was.

So I made a tumblr.

I've seen shaman NPCs myself, using conjury to boot. Hopefully Stormblood will elaborate a bit more, but Ala Mhigans were not just a physically capable people. I play my own shaman as a conjurer-sort who 'tries to commune with the land' and uses a lot of medicinal nasty-tastings until we have more information. In fact, let me dig around and see if there's anything I've missed...

Yeah, it seems like being creative might be necessary at this point, but that should be ok. Personally, I plan on treating it as "This is what -Raine- does/learned" rather than "this is what Ala Mhigan Shamans does", and with 20 years away from Gyr Abania, I bet there's been a lot of adjustments for everyone, so there should be room for some personal variations and vagueness in case we (hopefully) get new lore with Stormblood.

But awesome to see other people's shamans! I'd love to get some contacts for Raine! It would be great to share ideas and perhaps do some RP!

The Elementals of the Twelveswood don't necessarily represent how Elementals feel everywhere. And even then, there were Ala Mhigans allowed to stay in the Shroud. You can go see some at Quarrymill now. It's also worth noting that Ala Mhigo was founded by survivors of the Sixth Umbral Era floods, and thus would likely have mages in their history. They also use tattoos and talismans as magickal wards, which means they're not completely ignorant to it.

The Elementals of the Twelveswood don't necessarily represent how Elementals feel everywhere.

This is another foggy area or if it's been expanded upon I'm unaware.

There's things classifieds as "elementals" in the bestiary but I think these are different from The Elementals that are wrapped up with the Stillglade Fane and all that. Kinda like Succor and Succor. Yay words.

That's a bit of worldbuilding that I don't think has been touched on either or if it has it's on a quest npc somewhere I don't remember. Also as far as the gents in Quarrymill, they can't even have conjury used on them let alone practice it. I think it'd have to do with the lineage of your particular Highlander and if their ancestry had anything at all to do with the Autumn War since apparently the elementals can sniff that out because....reasons.

So, for example, having a character that is former Ala Mhigan nobility and a conjurer would be a tad wonky in my estimation. This is just my summation and opinion though.

So I made a tumblr.

Why hello!  As someone who has a character that was raised in that path and followed that trade for many years before taking up the lance, I can safely and sadly see this thread has about most of the lore on it. And you've taken the same idea with Raine that do with Tris:  "This is what/how he learned, not how the Ala Mhigan shamans are."  It works given his mother was an outcast and broadly considered a "witch" by the locals of the time.

To Teadrinker's point, I followed some of the same logic.  Anything healing is really more an herblism/wortcraft kind of thing.  I actually look at the alchemy recipes and wing it by dumbing them down with the basic ingredients, then adding the RP flair of smelling like a goats ass.

For magic, during the few and rare times you will see Tris put it to use instead of the lance?  Look to 1.0 Conjuration spells.  They are more fitting to the idea both highlanders and the Ala Mhigans being a rough and tumble sort of people.  Note that the spells are almost entirely offensive.

Still, I'm being careful with this.  While it satisfies the druid/ranger/pathfinder archetype I was wanting with Tris, I am fully prepared for lore to roundhouse his face as well.  It's a sparsely mentioned element of Ala Mhigan life, notably in the Cactuar Piss quest.  So I have to take a balancing act with it, and use some of my storytelling dynamics for the character to be not so upfront about being a shaman.

I would love more lore on it, and maybe Stormblood might toss of a few bones on that.

They do very much exist! They show up during the Ala Mhigan part of the early MSQ (level 30 ish) and during the 50 Monk quest.

In 1.0 they were conjurers, and in 2.0 they were conjurers. So I assume you can go either 1.0 CNJ with them, or 2.0 CNJ.

However while I think some might have been shunned, just as with any other class/job/archetype, I don't think that would be the general rule of thumb. They show up a few times here and there after all, together with other Ala Mhigans!

But yeah, we got very little on them. All I can kinda say they seem to be alike to conjurers, but for all we know... they might be a completely new/different class. But I do think what little what we have is a solid ground for "heals" and "can do magical damage".

That said we do have Ala Mhigan/Corpse Brigade Firedancers, who look like their THM counterpart ((oddly enough they don't use any firespells so far :^] )). So might be worth looking into if you are really looking for something more offensive in terms of magic? I'm not sure what you're after all! But we got even less lore on them, beyond them being mobs around the Corpse Brigade cave.

Completely unrelated, but maybe still related note. In the Winter's Knell 1.0 quests, there is however an Elemental trapped in a relic/gem. It is said to be an Ala Mhigan relic who existed for quite some time. So I wouldn't rule out the Elementals not living in Gyr Abania. Or heck, for all we knows Ala Mhigan shamans know how to trap them compared to their Gridanian counterpart. After all the forest gave fuck all about them in the Autumn War and didn't turn onto them in the Autumn War. So they might have had their shamans just dealing with greenwrath that way. Hells if I know. But that's all vague speculation at best, and something you really shouldn't take for granted or as fact.

I'd agree with Avelyn on this one. Definitely a basis for Ala Mhigan shamans being capable of healing and dealing magical damage as well. That's what I've done so far with Elsbeth at least! Tongue

But if you need more Shaman contacts feel free to contact me here or Elsbeth Blackheart in game. I'm always up for meeting other shaman in game and sharing ideas.

Elementals exist all over, the Black Shroud is just the only place they are powerful enough to make their will known (until the Calamity). Conjurer-equivalents who can "commune with nature" like a shaman probably exist in a lot of cultures. Even beast tribes seems to all have a caster class who casts spells of their Primal's element. From some of the SMN job quests, a lot of these places are attuned to that element.
