Just tossing my hat into the ring here as well. Getting started in FFXIV, since I finally talked myself into it. Been thinking about it for some time, and recent dissatisfaction with other games prompted me to finally 'bite the bullet'.
Kind of kicking myself for not doing so before now! <laughs>
Bit about me in introduction: Been gaming in one form or another since the early 80s. Started out with tabletop games (Red Box DnD) and moved on from there into a variety of genres, from sci fi to horror to modern and back to fantasy. Discovered MUDs in college and MUShes, and got hooked there.  It was not quite the same as tabletop, but it opened up a lot of new avenues for RP.
MMO gaming did not come about until WoW, when friends who were in Beta practically foamed at the mouth about how awesome it was. I picked up it, Guild Wars, and City of Heroes all around the same time and have been hooked ever since. WoW held my attention for a few expansions, CoH until it died an untimely death, and since then I've dabbled in a variety of MMOs, from subscription based to F2P to Buy to Play types.
In all of them though, RP and story have been the thing that has kept me. I love exploring worlds, crafting, seeing the story, and meeting people, but the thing that always keeps me going with an MMO (or has me moving on if it is missing) is community and RP.
So far (though 3 days is not much ), FFXIV seems to have a truly good community. That and the fact that the story is engaging so far (even if I am one of those horrid altitis sufferers who never can decide on a class), make me pretty sure this is going to be one I'm sticking with.
Hopefully will learn enough of the world lore and things to make a proper character soon and have a chance to dip my toes into the RP waters here!
