I'm trying to get my PS3 controller to work as a gamepad for my PC so I can try it out in game. The problem is I can't calibrate it or get it to work but it is recognized by the computer. I'm running Vista 64 bit. I hope that's not he problem. Any ideas on what I can do?

If anyone could recommend a good cheap gamepad that would be just as good

Frankly, for a cheap gamepad I always recommend a ps2 controller. If you can find the adapter, it used to cost 12 dollars. If you don't have a ps2 controller they cost about 10.

I've been told the adapter isn't sold anymore, which would be unfortunate. Why don't you want to get the ps3 one working?

Just grabbed a wireless adapter that lets me use my 360 controller with the PC so we will see how that works.

I used to use MotionJoy for FFXI, but with FFXIV being able to use all of the axis properly, there's no reason to subject myself to the pain that is trying to make it work every boot.

In the end, I use a wired 360 controller. Works perfectly, no batteries, has vibration and supports current games as well, no question asked.

Does it work with windows vista 64 bit?

The wired 360 controller should. Considering it's in effect what Windows 7 is (on the gaming front), it should be fine. Wireless controllers are the problem.

Just caved in and bought a wired one at my local 24 hour Mejeir. It seems to work. Now to test it in FFXiV once I get it patched.

Don't forget to map the controls in the config tool FIRST. Wired 360 controllers are my favorite, simply because they are a no-brainer for current games. They do have problems with older ones that can't recognize the right stick and triggers though.

I've gone through this several times, and got it working sucesessfuly on both 32 bit and 64 bit windows 7. But here's the video you should watch

Yeah I saw that video before but still couldn't getting working for some reason. This wired Xbox controller works great though. I enjoy that over the ps3 anyways, plus I can use it for GTA4 so I can actually drive properly on the pc version.
