Hey all

Im researching lore. Had a question hopefully you all can clear up for me. Thinking of making an alt character to rp. A Highlander lancer. Now is it possible for this man to have been a front line soldier at the big battle that took place when dalamud released bahamut? Could he have been fighting the empires ground troops and survived a retreat and have memories of the battle and his comrades? Also are there any military style free companies? The calamity was 5 years ago? Much appreciated!

Not trying to be silly. Just not finding well explained information on the events. Feel free to clarify.

Sorry, sorry, I just wanted to say that. ^_^

Frankly, I don't have an answer for you. I'm really not certain what happened in that battle, nor who was involved, or how, or what they did. I only know as much as the cinematic and cutscenes have revealed to me.

It's my understanding that only a handful of those people in the cinematic were actually saved via magic at the very end. However, since all three major leaders survived, one can assume that even though chances are slim, there could indeed have been survivors, perhaps even on the front line, although I believe with the destruction depicted, they would have to have tried to retreat long before Bahamut started the real fireworks. If I recall, they decided to pull their troops back before any more bloodshed occurred, and even though the requests were not responded to, it's not unfeasible that whoever was down there did not act.

As for the memory? I really couldn't answer that one, sorry.

Thanks I appreciate your input. I know for a fact the battle was between the alliance and the garlean empire. Those were the troops on the ground. Neither wanted bahamut to do what he did.the empire wanted the nation to save its people from itself. Divine intervention in a way though they are going about it in. Evil way. Apparenygly many battles were fought. But in this particular battle everything was effected. Anyone else have any input?

As I understand it, the main forces made a general retreat and it was the adventures(the warriors of light<WoL) that got saved by magic. there are plenty of NPCs that talk about the battle and the brave souls that stood at the fore(WoL again)

Others might have a bit more detail for you, but I would surmise that if your character a part of the general military units they would have fallen back ahead of time and had a much better chance of survival than those few who remained/retreated last.

(just watch the opening cut-scene you'll see where they call for the retreat =) )

Thanks! That's what I was thinking. But I was confused on how widespread the destruction went. With more research I learned not everything was destroyed.only the immediate area. So I think I will expand on this character concept and have him as a foot soldier who retreated.

Not just the immediate area, good portions of Limsa/grindania and Ul'dah got hit. it's just a question of if you were under the main crap storm or just risking getting hit by the stray shots. You'll even notice a crater in Coerthas. So it was sort of a the closer you are the less chance of survival you have, but just because your all the way out in limsa doesn't mean your safe. It just meant that unless you were the poor soul with the dark cloud of bad luck you probably wouldn't get hit( but if you had the cloud....happy funeral)

So a retreat to limsa or the other towns could have been why he survived. Staying and helping after the destruction, helping rebuild and all could go hand in hand with where he retreated too.

As I'm understanding it... your character idea is a non-warrior of light fighting in Cartaneau when Dalamund descends.

So a bit of background, since there seems to be some confusion here.

The battle of Cartaneau is the final staging point where the final remnants of Garlean's VII Legion. Their leader, Legate Nael van Darnus, was a zealot that believed Eorzea to be blighted (much like Gaius) and that the only way to restore it to any semblance of order was to destroy it outright (hence summoning meteor). By the time Caraneau occurs, Nael van Darnus was killed by the Warriors of Light. His legion, however, was whipped to a near-psychotic fervor and wholly believed the philosophies of their fallen Legate whom they had made a martyr to the cause of purification. This is why, when Louisoix came to Cartaneau to attempt to return Dalamund to it's rightful orbit, the Garleans were there to thwart their plans. The battle of Cartaneau begins and all hell breaks loose (just about literally, too).

Now, back to your question. Is it possible for a front liner to survive the fall of Dalamund? Bear in mind the actual Battle of Cartaneau was one of the biggest assaults in Eorzea up until that point, with the combined forces of the three grand companies: Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, and Gridania, facing off with the entire remnants of Nael's VIIth. This battle was FIERCE. Such that the mortality rate was high even without the moon blowing up. It was also relatively short -- the entire fight would have been going on for less than a half-hour before the signs of Dalamund's descent reached it's critical hour. Retreating to the main cities would not have been possible with anything less than teleportation, and the aetheric currents were too jammed up to allow linkshell communication much less send a full body through the aether. Then, of course, there is the wholescale damage of Bahamut, combined with his final Megaflare attack on Louisoix. In all honesty, the Warriors of Light themselves would have probably perished were it not for Loisouix's spell that cast them into the future.

But the question is "is it possible for him to survive without this spell?" And in that case I would say, "extremely tentative maybe." Is it probable? "No." If he was a part of the back line forces and took a retreat at the time that Grand Company leaders ordered it, he'd have a higher chance of survival (in other words, not main forces, but a part of one of the more successful ones that kept to the back lines -- the Grand Company Leaders did order a retreat and practically shouted for their people to get away).

Thy life is a Riddle to bear Rapture and Sorrow
To Listen, to Wonder, to Entrust unto tomorrow
In One fleeting Moment from the land doth Life flow
Yet in that Same Fleeting moment Thou must Live, Die, and Know

I really appreciate the clarification. This makes it easier to decide. I may end up making him a 4th string soldier who only got mere minutes of battle or suffered an injury and started his own retreat in order not to fall, (this would bring guilt and sense of dishonor.) I will reflect on all this and post up a mini bio when I am done!

You'll note that was a joke, explained immediately after posting. Thank you, however, for the unwarranted reprimand, it's much appreciated.

To answer your question, maybe. While being on the front line is pretty much a death sentence with how horrible the battle was. I would say it might be possible to retreat, but only if he did so early on. I am reluctant to put a time on how long the battle lasted as there is nothing to really back it up and its safe to not go on what it shows in the cs.

The only people he would be able to remember are the ones that retreated with you. I am actually unsure if lore even lets us remember the dead as I recall in a cutscene with the Grand Company members say that they cannot remember the fallen's names. I am not sure if this is just a cover up for the Warriors of Light or if we cannot even remember the ones who died before Bahamut arose. Any people that survived the fight were likely teleported away, thereby becoming the warriors of light and being erased from peoples memories.

So while he could remember the battle and anyone who retreated with him, I would keep the details fuzzy about the others until someone can clarify if we are allowed to remember the fallen.
