But 'hounds' sounds so cliche. I'd like to spice it up with some creature a little more interesting.

Being new to FF14, I'm not sure what would fill the role of 'hounds' to hunt down intruders. They would have to be something that can be tamed, yet vicious when ordered to attack. They would have to be either native to Eorzea, or something that could reasonably be imported by a rich noble.

Currently, my character a moon keeper & is 2/3 Miqote (both her parents areMiqote) and 1/3 Elezen (one of her grandparents was an Elezen on her mother’s side), although I’m not sure if that is too much and it is better to have her be half Elezen and half Miqote. Her name is going to go by a miqote sounding name and a French surname, so she would have a mix of cultures.

Here is where I’m worried, is it alright to have her come from one of these areas? We don’t know much about them, so I’m worried if it’s possible to write her from somewhere that we haven’t visited in Doma yet (since it would be weird for no one to recognize her if she came from one of the places that she was raised). If she were from Sharlayan, is it possible to not have run into the Scions or Alphinaud and Alisae? Thavnair is the only one I can see actually working, since we haven’t been there before.

Graff’s link pearl went off as he watched people pass by from his Sultana’s Breath apartment window. He cursed and tapped it on.

“Graff, we need to talk.”

It was his editor, Nonobu. She sounded pissed.

“We’re talking now. You already got my column today, so don’t badger me for another.”

“In person, Graff. Walk yourself down to the Mythril Eye and look me in the goddamn eyes.”

“You got a Step Ladder?”

“This is serious, Lacroix. Get down here right now.”

Graff knew his latest column’s rumination on the true nature of the Warrior of Light would raise a few eyebrows. He’d fought Nonobu over “controversial” content before. His comments on Gridania, his discouraging of neophyte adventurers, his claims about people passing through Garlean steel. But this seemed different.

Nonobu, of course, was standing on her desk, which would seem too big for a Lalafell. But that small race was quite adept at using things that would seem too big for them. “Sit down.” she puffed her cigar, clearly stressed. In her seat, there was a quiet young Wildwood… boy, or girl. Graff wasn’t sure. They were dressed in Sharlayan garb.

Graff instead remained standing. For once, he was the tallest Elezen in the room. “Is there a problem?” he asked, feigning innocence.

Nonobu threw the papers making up his latest column “Warrior of Light, Warriors in Shadow” in his face. “How in the seven hells do you know this! I didn’t know this until I read it!”

“So which of my theories was right? About the Warrior of Light, I mean.”

“That’s not what this is about, and your theories are patently ridiculous. "The Warrior of Light is not a discreet person, rather it is a manifestation of the Echo. One similar to the “Dark Angels” implied in pre-Allagan ruins, yet inexorably opposed to them." As a Scion, I know the Warrior of Light, and they’re a-“

Graff interrupted the wildwood youth. “Let me guess, they’re a man or woman, with some kind of hair, members of one of the five races or the Au’ra newcomers, and and a Disciple of War and/or Magic.”

“No one agrees on who the Warrior is. Lots of people have called themselves the Warrior of Light or been called that in the past few years. But that’s not what this is about.” Nonobu said. She was still standing on the table, still looking wroth.

The Wildwood continued “The problem isn’t the offense your columns give, though I’d prefer you stop writing things that could disrupt the Eorzean Alliance. The problem is that you’ve written something that’s actually dangerous. I have no idea how you found out about how Primals are summoned or the “Dark Angels” you describe as being behind it, but if those things got out, well, you’re not stupid. I want you to think about what people would do with that information.”

“You spend enough time in ruins older than Allag with the Echo, you start putting things together about “Dark Angels” that are behind the Calamities we periodically face. I’m not sure of the specifics, but I can hazard a few guesses.” Graff stopped and thought for a moment. “Truth matters. People deserve to know what they’re up against, and-”

“And what!?” Nonobu asked. “Didn’t you just point out how most people aren’t cut out to be adventurers? Do you have any self-awareness at all, or have the drugs finally burned that part out of your head!?”

“The majority of people actually cut out for the job don’t know this shit! They need to know!”

“And what’s knowing about the Ascians going to gain them?! Cutting deals for power, or witch hunts for suspected Ascian collaborators? And the Primal summoning description? How long till a group of powerful, amoral adventurers with the echo create a Primal specifically so they can go out and kill it?”

Nonobu had made a mistake, though at the time, she was the only one not to realize it. She had given Graff a name to put to his “Dark Angels.”

“Mister Lacroix, if I may. Miss Nonobu is right. This isn’t an argument you can win. And might I add, The Scions of the Seventh Dawn are now watching you. You are not to publish anything relating to Primals or (sigh) Ascians, nor are you to tell anyone anything related to those two subjects. I had hoped we could resolve this with you realizing the need for discretion. I would sincerely recommend that you cease those lines of inquiry altogether.” The Young Wildwood paused for a moment. “Or, if you cannot, I can tell you that there is a place for you in the Scions.”

“No dice.” How dare they. These self-important shadowy assholes had gotten to Nonobu. And now they wanted him to churn out propaganda for them.

“Graff, we aren’t going to publish this article as you’ve written it.” Nonobu had finally calmed down. “Take your article, cut out any mention or reference to Primals and Ascians, and we’ll reconsider. And no one else is going to publish your article either.”

Graff felt like he had been hit by a runaway train. He was conflicted. His anger at the suppression of truth was mixed with a growing realization that he might be wrong. Was truth always the way to go? Were some facts better left forgotten, or at least hidden from the general public? Forever, or until the time was right?

“I uh, need to think some things over.” Graff gathered up the papers that contained his article. “Im not taking this lying down!” he shouted.

“Doesn’t matter. You’re not discussing any of the shit Alphinaud and I have told you not to discuss with anyone. In this, or any future article. And that’s final.” Steel. Nonobu was determined, resolute, and unwilling to bend here. Graff knew better than to push her on this.

“So, uhh, about Hate and Despair in Gridania?”

“If you’ll give your word not to talk about Primals and Ascians, ever, you can write anything else you like about the Twelveswood. Or most other things, for that matter.” The young lad, Alphinaud, nodded in agreement. “The Scions can pull strings in several cases that would otherwise get a journalist into some serious trouble.”

Graff dropped his papers, and took the form a Red Mage takes when he is joining the higher and lower worlds with his enlightened will. “I, Graff Lacroix, Archmage of the Ul’Dah-Lacroix, Master of the Red Art, do solemnly swear that I shall never discuss the Profane Mysteries of the Primals and Ascians in the presence of the uninitiated. Should I break this vow, may my Echo ring hollow, may my sword arm wither and may all my magickal workings fail.” 

Graff had made a deal with the Scions. To write about the things that people could do something about, in exchange for not writing about things people could do nothing about. The unedited piece was going in his doomsday vault, to be used as insurance.

The oath was flowery, pretentious, and bullshit, as was any oath sworn without one’s Secret Name. But it was one he would abide by, and his surviving kin did not count as “the uninitiated.” He had a name for the “Dark Angels” that had wronged his family a century ago, and they would eventually pay for it. What Graff did not know was that Nonobu knew the existence and location of Graff’s secret evidence vault, and the Scions certainly had people who could defeat his extensive, paranoid, jury-rigged security. But they too would not act unless Graff broke faith with them.]]>

It seems that a lot of my character's research ends up happening behind the scenes, and it's hard to bring other people up to speed on her work without it seeming like I'm lecturing them. Further, I often keep things super vague to avoid making "discoveries" or "inventions" that break the lore or fall into power-gaming.

Does anyone else with a research-oriented character encounter similar issues? How big a deal are they and how do you resolve them? How do you get other RPers involved in your research (especially if they are non-researcher types!).]]>

So, lets get into the ideas!

Names

The character is a Raen Au Ra, whos name (right now) is Izzy Lindel. The first subject shes wondering about right now is regarding lore appropriate names. How strict do people tend to be with this sort of thing? Been playing this character for a little while now before deciding to get into RP and kinda attached to the name. Would somthing like the character taking up the name as an alias and their birth name is somthing else, more in line with with the cultures name be accepted? 

Concept

Right now the basic idea shes brainstorming on for Izzy is an eccentric scholar(the occupation, not necessarily the in game class) and wanderer whos roaming the land in search of knowledge on whatever peaks her interest. Will probably have an interest in nature, wildlife, magic and magical phenomena. Interested in anything strange or out of the ordinary. Also likely a collector of random junk of dubious value from her travels. Might have been kicked out of a home land for doing something sketchy? 

In general, sorta thinking of her as a weird semi-vagabond roamer. Personality will probably be fairly socially awkward, not necessarily shy but lacking much in social graces, poor attention to personal space. Maybe sort of deadpan snarky. 

In terms of skills and abilities, the character will probably be somthing of a jack of all trades (Partly out of being indecisive about which job to actually main, heh.).  The sort thats maybe learned enough about general battle to pick up most weapons and be okayish with them but definitely not a master. Probably more skilled in magic due to being more interested in those arts, but still sloppy from not having a lot of proper training and having her focus all over the place. She'll be a crafty tricky sort but pretty garbage in a straight up fight.

I have been playing FF14 for just over a year now and have only recently been intrigued by the RP community after doing some research into it. I have done a little RP before but only text based so this is all new to me. Just wondered if anyone would mind providing any feedback on what I have come up with for my character.

I have done some research into the seeker tribes and I have tried to keep my story kind of in line with what I think may be ok:


Character Name: Thorn Thunderfists 

Character Gender: Male
Race: Miqo'Te Seeker 

Character Disposition / Mood (generally speaking): Energetic (Sometimes referred to as hyperactive…) with a positive view on life.   

Background Story / Info: Growing up in the Sagolii Desert always had its ups and downs for Thorn. Found as a baby amongst the brushes near the Forgotten Springs by a wandering female U-Tribe Hunter, he was taken in. Choosing to raise him as her own the female hunter; U’Rurilo had to deal with a lot of disdain from the other tribe members about her decision. Shielding him as much as she could from the other tribe members, she raised Thorn to be a self-sufficient child so that if he ever found himself alone he could at least survive. She was a positive soul always advising Thorn to find the good and the excitement in things. 

Unfortunately for Thorn at the age of 10 cycles, U’Rurilo was killed during an Amalj'aa ambush while out hunting. This left Thorn a true outcast within the U-Tribe. Knowing he would not last long as a male Seeker Miqo’te he ventured out into the Sagolii Desert. Many thought him as good as dead, but Thorn possessing a persistent soul proved everyone wrong. For many cycles he survived the desert even making a return to the springs to resupply. Eventually Thorn managed to find a regular job at Byregot’s Strike keeping the mines clean from dust and sand, and on occasions the odd clearing out of monsters. 

One night when the sky was clear and the stars were bright Thorn started to wonder what else was out there in the world, and that very next day fate, being a funny old girl, presented Thorn with a glimpse of what could be. A group of travelling adventurers wandered into Byregot’s Strike looking for ways to make some quick gil. During the nightly drinks Thorn watch intriguingly how close the adventurers were. At some point during the night one of the adventurers; a burly Roegadyn, who had tanked the ale back, started to get a little boisterous with his fellow adventurers asking them for a sparring session. None would accept, but Thorn did, to the surprise of everyone around. 

The excitement of the fight thrilled Thorn and he never wanted it to end, he even managed to land a few hits on the Roegadyn that shocked the giant. But the fight was ended when the Roegadyn pinned Thorn to the ground by sitting on him; “You fight like a storm possessed boy, your fists are like Thunder when they hit, fast and true.” The words still etched into Thorns mind to this day. Saying goodbye to the adventurers left an itch in Thorns stomach, he wanted that companionship, he wanted to see the world. So he left, he got on the next cart to Ul’Dah to start his adventures. Never saying no to anything Thorn has experienced a lot during his travels, and he never wants that to end.  

Special Details: Thorn just wants to find a big Roegadyn preferably with a big bushy beard to be his best friend, they will drink together, adventure together and share bro hugs when they are feeling down, happy, or just… all the time...  


I haven't given Thorn a specific job role as he will generally try to fight with anything at hand, however I don't picture him being a magic user. 

This is still a work in progress so any feedback will be much appreciated. Also while I am here I currently play on the Louisoix Server and have recently joined a small RP linkshell that is still deciding on what to do. If there are any other Louisoix players that are currently RP'ing or thinking about it please let me know as I would be happy to join if you are accepting newbies.

I have been playing FF14 for just over a year now and have only recently been intrigued by the RP community after doing some research into it. I have done a little RP before but only text based so this is all new to me. Just wondered if anyone would mind providing any feedback on what I have come up with for my character.

I have done some research into the seeker tribes and I have tried to keep my story kind of in line with what I think may be ok:


Character Name: Thorn Thunderfists 

Character Gender: Male
Race: Miqo'Te Seeker 

Character Disposition / Mood (generally speaking): Energetic (Sometimes referred to as hyperactive…) with a positive view on life.   

Background Story / Info: Growing up in the Sagolii Desert always had its ups and downs for Thorn. Found as a baby amongst the brushes near the Forgotten Springs by a wandering female U-Tribe Hunter, he was taken in. Choosing to raise him as her own the female hunter; U’Rurilo had to deal with a lot of disdain from the other tribe members about her decision. So, I've RPed for years upon years, got into FFXIV earlier this year, and I've been casually RPing FFXIV content lately - but only off-site with friends, and not in game. I'm interested in making an alt on Mateus and giving "proper" in-game RP a whirl.

I think I'm pretty well-versed in canon Seeker lore, and I've seen some examples of how the FFXIV RP community handles Seekers - tribes being larger and more diverse than the single settlements we see in game, that kind of thing. I'm still curious, though, if any loose consensus exists in the community w/r/t the tribes that don't have a nailed-down canon location? R Tribe being La Noscean based on the location of raptors and R Tribe NPCs, for example, is one that I see a lot. Are there other tribes that people tend to agree on a background for?

And if you play a Seeker, even if you don't think you follow any kind of community consensus, I'm interested in hearing your assumptions/headcanons/background-building for your character's tribe.

The only loop I find around this is if the person they're working for has the same conviction they do and they would pledge to it for a greater good (or at least, what they think would be for the greater good). Otherwise, I'm having trouble seeing another way around the idea for a dark knight to serve a higher authority when they're self proclaimed to be their own.

So far I have for a back story that she was orignally born in Ala Mhigo, tho still a new kitten (Miqo'te) when her and her mother fled, her Nunh Omae was part of the fists of rhalgr and so her mother passed down that tradition to her.
