[11 February 2018] RPC Upgrade completed

The site may feel a little sluggish. We're actively converting data from the current forums in preparation for the new Invision Power Services site. (With an intermediate upgrade in the middle.)

Data from around 11:30 AM February 11, 2018 and earlier will be migrated. Posts, threads (including this one), and private messages will need to be reposted once the new site launches.

Downtime will be minimized. The current site will remain open and fully functioning while the conversions take place on the snapshot above. Once we've verified everything looks to be working, users will be directed to the new site automatically.

Per our Linkshell and Free Company Hall guidelines, theÂ Linkshell Hall Â and Free Company Hall will be cleaned of outdated posts on January 1st, 2017. (Or more realistically throughout the first week of the year). Any and all Linkshell, Free Company, and/or Personal Listings that do not have a recent post from the last 60 days / 2 months will be moved to the Chronicles forum for archival purposes.

If you have a thread that becomes archived, please notify a moderator/admin via the Feedback and Requests forum, post here in this thread, or report the thread for a un-archive and a moderator will handle it as soon as possible. If notifying a staff member by PM/thread, please provide a link to listing you would like to be moved.
Previous threads about cleaning will be closed. Do note that LS/FC entries may lose their special tabs (and the information in them) when placed into Chronicles because this information is only stored for specific forums.

Important: To prevent archival in the Linkshell Hall and Free Company Hall, a post from November 1st (or later) will be required. Editing of the original post will not trigger an update to the last_post date, which is used to judge activity.

Greetings and salutations, gentle forumgoers.

Remember that RPC upgrade we're working on? With the help of your generous donations, we managed to raise enough money to purchase a license of IPS 4.2. It's our hope that with an across-the-board site upgrade, we'll be able to better facilitate the needs of the RP community of Final Fantasy XIV.

We haven't forgotten about it. Promise. Your donations were not wasted. Ever since we purchased the license, we've been making slow but steady progress on migrating all of the data over to a new host.

However, we're still a handful of people working amidst the tumultuous obligations of real life and such. In order to speed up and smooth out this process, the RPC Staff is putting out a call for technically-minded volunteers.

Right now, we're looking for people with experience in the following areas, in order of our priorities with the top of the list being our highest priority:

- AWS (Amazon web services) administration
- MediaWiki experience
- nginx, php and mysql exposure (html and css a bonus)
- Linux experience (basic know-how, installing/configuring above software)

[28 November 2017] Linkshell and Free Company Hall thread title conventions

Hello!

It's come to the staff's attention that there has been an influx of threads in the Linkshell Hall and Free Company Hall that are adding in server labels that affect the sorting of the Halls. We'd like to remind that (server name) is not needed at the beginning of a thread for the filters to work. The button filters are powered by options in the initial post!

In this end, we will be lightly enforcing a basic thread title convention in the form of "Group Name [Server name]". The and [Server name] fields will of course be optional, although heavily recommended for groups that do not have a dedicated filter button.

After the initial adjustment, users may see one or more notifications if their thread titles were adjusted. Rest assured that no content in your posts has been changed! While we'd like for users to take care of this on their own, the task will also be added to our Linkshell and Free Company Hall cleaning tasks, which take place every two months (usually).

If you have any questions about this policy, you can ask here in the thread, or ask the staff in a private manner using the Requests and Feedback forum where your thread and posts will be private to just you and the staff.

[21 August 2017] Opt-in testing of new RPC Layout

Hello! A few of you may have seen me alluding to this, and here's the official post on it. I'll be opening semi-limited public testing of the new RPC Site for testing and feedback.

I'd like to once-again thank our Patreon members and the members who did a one-time donation to help cover the cost of InvisionPower and our server-hosting expenses.

To get login access, please post in the thread, PM me, or open a thread requesting access in the Requests and Feedback forum. Because the new site is running on a testing server with limited resources, not all features will be as responsive as they will be once they're applied to the actual RPC servers.

Do note that the layout and organization of the sites may change a bit during this time. We are still investigating how we'd like to migrate certain features and sections of the current RPC to the new site. I will do what I can to keep this thread updated with any feature adjustments added to the test sites and of any bus I am aware of.

The test site database was cloned from RPC on August 1st. The wiki had an older clone used. Not all users and content was carried over and accounts and pages may need to be recreated.

Calendar:

The upcoming events section currently only reads from the Balmung Events Calendar import. This may be changed to all calendars or just on-site events. for other event calendars to import, please let Unnamed Mercenary know! (21 August 2017)
The navigation bar's club section is now pre-filtered into Linkshells and free Companies. The subnavigation has been updated to include our currently filtered servers.

It's come to my attention that some new users are not receiving emails from the RPC, including the one to activate their accounts.

If this happens to you, please post in the Requests and Feedback forum (open to Awaiting Activation users) and I'll try to help get you sorted out!

Currently, this appears to be affecting users with email accounts from the following providers:

United Internet
web.de (part of United Internet)
GMX (part of United Internet)

Once posting, an administrator/hardhat will ask to confirm some information about your account and then activate it manually. It is recommended to try switching the email account to another provider if this happens.

[18 May 2017] User accounts on the same email

As of today, the option to register multiple user accounts to an already registered email has been disabled.

This is in preparation for our upcoming move to an InvisionPower suite, which identifies all users by email. Existing accounts are still all accessible on the MyBB forums and we recommend that users adjust their secondary accounts to use another email. The oldest account registered (by data/ User ID) will become your new primary account if there are duplicate emails. All posts and threads will adjust to that user and will not be lost. (Although situations in where accounts were made for in-character purposes may become a little harder to read.)

Currently, there are 730 emails on the RPC that are registered to just over 1600 accounts, which is just a fraction of our community size!

If you are unsure if you've registered multiple accounts, or are locked out of an old account, you can reset your password using the Lost Password tool.

[15 May 2017] RPC Upgrades and Migration Announcement

Hello, hello. Happy mega maintenance, everybody.

For a while now, the RPC staff has been preparing for a migration and upgrade of our website and its features, an effort that has only been spurred on by the recent feedback survey. We'll be upgrading to newer software that can better facilitate our needs and give us more possibilities to support the ever-evolving RP community in Final Fantasy XIV.

We'll be upgrading to InvisionPower, the newest version of which will be released mid-2017.

New features will include:

Brand new calendar, with the capability to import directly from a Google calendar
Multiple calendars, so other servers don't have to fight with Balmung for calendar visibility.
Front page portal, allowing for user-submitted content like news articles, short stories, character spotlights, and screenshots on the front page.
Custom pages. Users will be able to create customised individual pages for things like character info, Free Companies, or NPCs, with easier functionality than the wiki. (The wiki's not going anywhere!)
Group pages. Each group will have access to their own sort of mini-forum.
Improved Linkshell and Free Company functionality. It'll be easier to advertise and easier to find!
Improved gallery
Updated website theme and design, with easier site navigation.
Multiple tags per post, so you can tag open/closed, timezone, story/journal, and server on a single thread. Our current system only allows for one tag per thread!

And more quality-of-life improvements!

These are all things that our current software is unable to handle, as it's quite dated. We're itching to give the RPC a much needed upgrade, which will enable us to better support the growing roleplay community on all servers.

Upgrading to IPS 4.2 and purchasing all of the features listed above, however, does necessitate an upfront cost.

We are looking to raise a one-time sum of $450 USD to facilitate this upgrade.

Again, this is a one-time sum; all recurring costs, including license renewal and webhosting are much lower and can be maintained with the continued support of our patrons.

Q&A

When will the migration happen?
--We have no fixed date as of yet, but will let you know well ahead of time.

Will I lose any of my threads or posts?
--Nope, every thread and every post will be kept in the migration.

Will I lose any of my content on the RPC Wiki?
--The RPC wiki and its content will not be affected by this upgrade, save for some cosmetic changes. All wiki data has already been imported in tests.

Will I have to reformat anything?
Custom BBCode and certain visual extensions such as the tabs in Free Company and Linkshell Halls cannot be converted. You will most likely have to make small adjustments to old posts to update formatting once the migration is complete, and we encourage you to report any threads or posts that are behaving oddly after the move.

Will I lose any of the content I have uploaded to the RPC Wiki?
--Your uploaded screenshots and art work will also be kept safe in the migration!

What amount do I have to donate?
--You don't have to donate anything. This is not compulsory and we appreciate every penny that we receive.

I'm already donating to the RPC via Patreon. Where's that money going?
--The Patreon funds are spent towards paying the webhosting costs. Any runoff from Patreon is sent into reserve, where it's used to pay for the next billing cycle.

Is there any other way I can help besides donating?
--The RPC is in need of technical staff. If you're familiar with PHP, PHP templates, IPS, or other relevant expertise, please contact Unnamed Mercenary here on the RPC.

How long will this take?
--As of writing, the RPC staff is waiting on the release of IPS 4.2. While we've been conducting some internal tests and demos on IPS 4.1, many of the upcoming features appear to be well-geared for our forums. We'd like to keep major chages to organization and layout to a minimum. If the new functions do not turn out to work as well as we'd hope, we'll provide updates.

What's going to happen to the old/current site? Will there be a preview available? What about for Patreon users?
--We plan to offer access to the newer site in phases.

First, we'll be making a full backup of RPC as it is now.

From there, the staff will be working on some quick configuration adjustments (forum permissions, user groups, cleaning up some boards/posts/etc).

Once we've got the site working mostly, we'll be opening it up to users in the Patreon group to help us iron out some features and catch any issues we may have missed.

After that, we'll be putting the old RPC into a read-only state and opening up the new forums to all users.

Both sites will continue to run to ensure that any posts and threads that were missed in conversion can be reposted.

A final announcement will then retire the MyBB site and Coppermine Gallery.

After receiving feedback on the matter, we are now updating our procedures for deletion of wiki pages.Â

Request your wiki page deleted:Â
You can request a wiki page you have created to be deleted.Â
Simply blank the page and insert the following code:Â

Pages that have this tag added, by the owner of the page, will be deleted during ongoing clean up efforts by staff.
Adding a deletion request to a page that is not your own will be held on par with wiki vandalism and is not allowed.Â

This also works with Media pages, e.g an image you have uploaded. If you for whatever reason do not want the image on the Wiki anymore, simply access the file page, hit edit and paste in the deletion request text. Not sure what images you have uploaded? You can see them here:

Pages that have been left blank:Â
Presently we have a large amount of pages that have been left blank, presumably because their owners have not known how to request the pages deleted. If you are the owner of one such, please add the request-for-deletion-code at your leisure.Â
Pages that have been blank for the last 60 days will be deleted when found by staff.Â
This will be an ongoing effort starting from the 5th of May 2017.Â
Wiki pages that are not 100% blank will not be deleted.Â
