Hi all. I started roleplaying in ff14 recently after a swap over from WoW, and I have to say I'm loving it. However, after creating a paladin class, I'm struggling to find lore about how they function in a literal sense. The main question I'm wondering is, are warriors/paladins a melee class through and through, using only their strength and skill to fight, or is there an element of some magic, either conscious or unconscious, going on that allows them to perform the feats they can. From the in-game animations it would seem they are empowering their attacks with magic, yet that may simply be the flashy visual style of the game. Yet with the kinds of things our characters end up fighting, it seems like their must be something more than mere strength of arms letting them take on these powerful monsters, perhaps enchanted weapons and armour even?

To sum up, if anyone can enlighten me if warriors/paladins are somehow magical or simply stronger than most, I'd appreciate it.

New to Eorzea and Black Mage lore, but as I'm writing my character, I'm running into some conflicting perspectives of how magic works from different sources.
The question really comes down to:

How easy is it for a thaumaturge / Black Mage to cast spells in either simple demonstrations and sustained combat?

From an outside perspective, I feel like there should be some measure of balance; weaker spells are easily cast and can be done so repeatedly without even beginning to tip toward being exhaustive while stronger spells take more effort unless experienced or nuanced to the character within the constraints of the lore.

Black magic requires the use of a soulstone and tapping the soulstream so that itself needs some clarity as to how easy it is for a black mage to wield that kind of magic. I would think a more experienced black mage would have little concern for even casting stronger spells, but with an obvious upper limit to again keep within the constraints of lore. The acquisition of the soulstone itself is more or less irrelevant I suppose as any attempt to use black magic without one would be more or less lethal from what I've seen on these forums. In short, my character has a soulstone and I'm actively working to resolve the character's story to make it reasonably plausible from a lore perspective that they'd complete whatever task necessary to get it.

I'm loosely familiar with the idea that Black Mages tap the soulstream to cast their spells, but some people tell me this can be done with ease while others state that its terribly exhausting. Both feel wrong to me; too easy and everyone would do it. Too hard and no one would do it. I'm sure there's a healthy medium but the question is where does that middle ground lie? Even the class quests suggest that Black mages wield their magic with relative ease and it seems to be driven by the idea they are constantly striving for more and more destructive power.

I want my mage to eventually become powerful, but not at the risk of lore-breaking or godmodding so any information that brings some clarity to this would be greatly helpful!

Thanks!

Heretics! By which I specifically mean people of Coerthan origin who are actually allied with Dravanians against Ishgard, not political inconveniences to the Ishgardian status quo who've been marked for destruction.

Things I know:

1) Any information on heretics that comes from Ishgardian sources - CCH MSQ, leves, other flavor text - is necessarily biased, first because it will discount any possible motivations or beliefs in favor of THEY JUST HATE HALONE, and secondly because Ishgardians lump a lot of different things into the "heretic" label. Some of this bias is easy to pick out. Some of it is less so, especially in things like FATE descriptions where the line between IC and OOC description can be unclear.

2) It is, at least, safe to assume that heretics are not universally people who got up one day with a raging hate-on for Halone and hankering to murder some of their countrymen. Plenty seem to have been failed by or driven out from Ishgardian society and displaced their faith onto dragons.

3) That said, many of those we get to see seem less than lucid, though I'm not sure how much of that is ARR jank (aevises in SV Hard come to mind). Drinking dragon blood and completing your transformation appears to do something to your mental state.

4) There is some kind of established heretic belief system - see the draconian rosaries, the value placed on transforming into an aevis, the images of Shiva. This info is heavily colored by Ishgard bias, because anything that seems weird and aberrant gets talked up and anything actually kind of reasonable is denied.

5) Militant heretics are, if not friends with Nidhogg's minions, then at least on good enough terms to fight together with them, as when the dude summons a wyvern at Witchdrop.

Things I know I don't know:

1) Any info from the Dragoon job quests.

Things I'd like to know:

1) Just how many heretics are there? Is defecting to the Dravanians like joining a tight-knit club where you know most people, or is it much more distributed than that? If you're not an undercover heretic and you've actually packed up and headed west, what does your daily life and social circle look like?

2) Are the militant heretics we've seen pretty representative of the whole - like, to be cool with the Dravanians, you have to commit to fighting - or are there "casual" heretics out there who just kind of live their dragon-revering lives?

3) Was worship of Shiva a thing before Iceheart showed up with her revelation, or was that story news to everyone?

4) What exactly does turning into an aevis do to you? If you don't get shanked by Ishgardians, does it leave any kind of tempering-like effect, or do you just kind of go back to normal eventually...? Do dragons actually possess hypno-vision that enthralls people? How much of this is Ishgard talking up how scary evil dragons are and how much is actually kind of shady?

5) How much face-to-face contact with dragons does the average heretic have? Is this mostly an ideology that is spread and negotiated mortal to mortal, or does(/did) the Horde have an active interest in cultivating and working with a force of Coerthan apostates?

Basically: seeking a realistic perspective on the lives of Dravanian sympathizers that allows for RPing one beyond a caricature level.

Okay so, we always assumed that White Magic is also called and referred to as Succor. I have parsed through Sounssy's compilations and the lorebook, and besides Sounssy's own words, I have only found mention of succor once, and that is in the lorebook, page 230 on white mages, but it is unclear if it is referring to its proper name (Succor), or just you know, the act of succor, a common word. Thus I wonder if you know of any other source that speaks clearly of White Magic also being called Succor somewhere?
We also have a few sources here: http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=13072
Which doesn't exactly call White Magic The Art Of Succor, but it's... ambiguous, if you see what I mean?
hello everyone. I have been looking through the forums and can hardly express my gratitude for making such a forum!

Now what i would like to know is the following.

In real life we give certain properties to stones and crystals and metals that supposedly ward of evil, magic, spirits etc. I was wondering if there is such a sing in FF14 as well.

Currently I am RPing a plot with a friend who is very susceptible to aether in general. In this particular case dark aether. Is there anything lorewise in the game that could ward off the effects of aether on an individual or at least damper them?

I was thinking of crafting a bracelet or neckless made of the said items that she could wear in RP to protect her while we play out our plot.

Thank you all in advance for any help you can give

Hello, I have a few questions about Dark Knights, and their soulstones, I wish to progress with him as smoothly as possible but I feel I need to clear some things up before I do. I'll post my character's wiki if some of you wish to read it. It will be great to get some feedback or tips on it :]

1. So darkness is something all Dark Knights deal with and can take on a form like IG, Is it different for every Dark Knight? Does it only take the form of whoever is carrying the soulstone or can it take the form of another person (say like a dead comrade or relative?)

2. If the darkness is a reflection of the Dark Knight's dark intent or desire (Idk which one it is) Can the darkness antagonize the Dark Knight to do evil if they are not in a good state of mind? Does the darkness make them go insane or whats the deal?

3. I read up on some lore about soulstones, (mainly Dark knight soulstone posted in a tumblr by someone with a dark brown xeala with black hair with red highlights I think) So if a Dark Knight desires to forfeit their life, would they unable to use the soulstone or would their be unable to use it if the decide to not protect but instead destroy everything?

4. Soulstone, does it suck the souls of its wielder once they die?? (I've been pondering on this for quite some time and would love an answer to this :]))

5. Since dark knights fuel their power with negative emotions, If one would go murderously insane, using feeling like anger, malice and murderous intentions. This wouldn't effect the strength of his abilities right?

Specifically for Au ra!

I'm keen on rping my 'non-human' characters, well, not human-like. I know FFXIV leaves little to the imagination sometimes, but there are a good deal of artists that draw Au ra like sub-monster humanoids and I'm super into that (Please look at my favourite Au ra picture of all time, here http://nickutried.tumblr.com/post/166586...ir-concept). I know a fair few people that roleplay their Miqo's and Au ra as biologically differing humanoids that are either beastly on the outside and diverse within, so I'd like to see if anyone else does it in the general populace!Â

Examples of stuff I'd be interested in hearing out are head-canons to perhaps your own character, regardless of whether you are 'lore strict' or not. Some examples I see around are regarding enhanced hearing, running higher temperatures, pseudo-claws instead of hands, alternate tail shapes for function (IE biologically natural stubbed tails or more prehensile tails (more catlike)), crazy jaw strength, resting BPM differences, hormone differences, bent backs, far wider thighs ect, ect.

My reasons beyond liking these changes in peoples characters? I'm a h u g e biology nerd, and this sort of thing is insanely interesting to me!

Even within the game and the lore book, there are plenty of gaps or things like unsaid that leave room for industrious roleplayers to fill with ideas, theories, assumptions, and weirdness that collectively get referred to as 'headcanon'.

So what is your favorite - one that you've come up with to fill in something for your character's backstory, something you've heard from other folks, something you sometimes forget is not actual canon?

I'm new to RPing on XIV and would appreciate some insight into how to approach healing in RP.

How do you play out the differences between having a skilled healer vs. just carrying a few potions with you?

Also, if someone has a severe physical injury, does that typically still require a recovery time, even with a gifted healer?

Thanks!
