So what your 6'0 character can get pummeled by a 3'5 person. this is a fantasy game, the real world physics dont apply. The disadvantage of reach isn't going anywhere, but speed can make up for that somewhat, as they canonically have a natural inclination towards dexterity. I figure a lala who has strength greater than that of a hyur either trains like crazy (A classic handwave, workhorse of thousands of stories) or there's something unnatural about them, whereas most are probably a bit weaker. I do agree that a super strong Lala should be distinctive and rare, because it makes my character more unique, lol. Still, I wouldn't get too deep into it. RE: RP Pet peeves. Suffice to say, since it invalidates the entire point of my charater's existence and others like it, I personally cannot abide it. So I mean, of course I'm pretty biased. No, this is fair. I get what you're saying. I'd like to clarify though, I don't mean to poop on lalafell warrior types. If that's the way you want to play your character, go for it. I do, however, think that the disadvantage from lack of reach should be accounted for. An experienced lalafell warrior would know about it, and be able to deal with it, but it is still there. Reach is not a physical limitation that was negated by "oh, well it's fantasy" even if strength and skill are. I think it should still be addressed. That isn't to say that, if my character is 6'6 and yours is 3'2, I will win 100% of the time, but the advantage is clear, and the smaller character should have to work around it. The smaller character may know exactly what they're doing and they may win decisively, but that shouldn't be the case ten times out of ten. Like you said, it should come down to experience. No, my biggest issue wasn't with small characters completely handwaving how strength works in the real world, though I did make it seem that way with my examples, it was really more aimed toward people who, in an emoted combat scenario, will always disregard whoever they're RPing with in an attempt to be Billy Badass and win every fight with cool kid dagger tricks. No RPer should assume that their character is the strongest or the most skilled or the most experienced in present company. I RP a Highlander who has been wielding a variety of melee weapons for over two decades. He's strong, he's big, he's experienced, he's intelligent, and he's even surprisingly agile based on the short stories I've written on him (in the style of Robert E. Howard's "Conan the Cimmerian" or Edgar Rice Burroughs's "Tarzan of the Apes"), but even with all of those advantages I have given him for the sake of good adventure stories, I never just plainly assume no one around can beat Tancred in a fight, and I get angry when others do that with their characters. It's not because I think I'm the best RPer in the world or something and need to ironically show off my humility, I just think that everyone loves their character as much as I do and we share a world where we're all our own protagonists. No one character should be able to beat all others in a fight. There's always a bigger fish. I know that sounds hypocritical with my rant about how smaller characters are weaker than bigger ones, but that is just me speaking in generalities. If I walk into a group of strange RPers, and I want to know who Tancred would single out as the biggest threat, I look for the biggest guy or girl in the room. Could a lalafell or a miqo'te possibly beat Tancred in a fight? Certainly. But with smaller races, I think a bit more explanation is required to convey how they could from a logical standpoint. I hope that's making sense. It is 5:30 in the morning here... RE: RP Pet peeves. What's yours? - Flynn Rosenberg - 07-07-2015 Characters who ICly raid through Castrum and Imperial complexes solo like it's nothing. Fighting primals solo like it's nothing. Defeating Ultima Weapon like it's nothing. Soloing Coil like it's nothing. Doman RPers calling everyone senpai or sama or speaking Japanese saying hello like "herro" which I find really disturbing as Yugiri speaks English (or whatever language you have it set to) perfectly. Being from another dimension as if you've put on Oculus Rift and warped into the game. Changing name or killing off your character every few weeks. *looks for another grumpy list in the meantime* RE: RP Pet peeves. THIS SO VERY MUCH HOLY SHIT THANK YOU RE: RP Pet peeves. What's yours? - Griffith! - 07-07-2015 That "herro" shit is also super racist. Lately, my biggest peeve is people ignoring my personal story in favor of theirs. I'm not being unreasonable here - if we've RPed your crap for two hours, is it really so unthinkable that I might like to turn the story to deal with my own character for awhile? I'm not just a supporting character in your story, I'm also the main character of mine. I'm tired of seeing people extricate themselves from RP just because the story isn't about them anymore. In all seriousness, I rolled my character before we had any Doman lore, nor met any NPCs. So since lore has been added i've adjusted. Those whom I roleplay with however I do try and persuade them to mimic NPC dialogue if possible. Knowledge is power. ^^ RE: RP Pet peeves. What's yours? - Ignacius - 07-07-2015 My RP pet peeve is boredom. No joke, you'd be amazed how many people who write in RP can't write.  And it's really hard, especially when you play with people you like, to stomach a boring character.  By that I don't mean going the Mary Sue route either. Your character is supposed to be a person and a person is supposed to have a personality.  They should have a way of talking and acting.  And it's not their fighting style, but whether they light a cigarette with matches or a lighter, if they're sarcastic or poignant, righteous or apathetic.  A character should be, of all thing, unique. So when I'm sitting in a bar watching eight people sulk and blurt out the same story about their parents' murder, it's not that they're all the same that bothers me, but that I can't tell them apart. Short answer, a good RP character can talk about the weather and engage you, while a weak one can talk about the end of the world and make you wish it was really coming.  And there's nothing worse in all of the RP world than a weak, boring, beige-room of a character. We've seen Hyur/Miqo'te/Elezen kids in-story and they look NOTHING like lalas, it would be like if I said a midlander male was a roegadyn child. Just takes whatever immersion I had and atomic-suplexes it. RE: RP Pet peeves. What's yours? - LadyRochester - 07-08-2015 People who obviously want to RP for the sake of ERP, and try to shroud their interest by "involving" their characters in your plot, only to walk away if you don't give them what they want. While having a flirty character tends to lure these kinds of people, this doesn't mean she spreads her legs for every passerby. Pretending to be "genuinely" interested in my character, only to frequently pester me about  the possibility of romance/erp between them isn't going to take you far. Does this mean she would never romance other characters or get involved intimately? No, but people must understand that what you say OOC isn't going to do shit IC. I don't care how much you /tell me that our characters would be "so good together and they should totally date," show me. IC relationships take IC effort to build, she won't magically land on your character's dick because they said "hello" once and you are telling me how "kewl n sexy" your character is OOC. RE: RP Pet peeves. What's yours? - Syranelle Ironleaf - 07-08-2015 Just reading through the last few posts I think this is less a "pet peeve" thread and more a general grousing thread about things we encounter in RP that we don't like.  Either that or people don't really understand what a "pet peeve" is. A pet peeve is a MINOR annoyance that other people generally find acceptable that personally irritates an individual to a greater degree than others.  I don't really consider god-moding, blatantly ignoring people, or sexual harassment (IC or OOC) all that minor.  XP Perhaps this ought to be renamed to the "Roleplay Venting Thread" instead.  XD RE: RP Pet peeves. What's yours? - As'elena - 07-08-2015 Not sure it really counts as a ''pet peeve'' since it's one of those obvious annoyances that pretty much everyone agrees with, but it's what happened mostly with me on other MMO's. It's been mentioned before. The whole IC interest in someone transferring over towards OOC. And then it gets to a point where the people will get all anime desu desu on you and sent you hugs for no reason and get very clingy. Further I have a pet peeve about myself, which kinda only applies here in FF for now. I am admittedly a little bit of an elitist. I don't shun or ignore people or anything, but I always want to strive for a perfect lore-accurate story. Seeing as I am new to roleplay on FF.. I'm an ignorant little noob, which I can't stand in the slightest. This kinda goes hand in hand when a lot of people say; ''It's fine, you should do what you want, nobody is gonna mind'' when I -want- them to criticize me to death. |
