RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Steel Wolf - 05-06-2015 Steel currently doesn't have any sort of great aetheric ability. She tried to study arcanima but literally got a headache from it, and thaumaturgy came after, but only if she was able to read from a grimoire, meaning her spells were pretty long in the casting and often didn't fire in the right direction. I'm thinking that whatever source of aether the Dark Knights draw from (Yoshi plz lore nao) will feel more "natural" to her and so she'll have an easier time wielding it. I don't expect her to be an expert, and I'm kinda-sorta-hoping that she finds a tutor or mentor, but it will see her increase in power. Which will make her feel like :3 RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - ProvaDiServo - 05-06-2015 Multiple lifetimes worth of experience and power gains. >.> <.< RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Desu Nee - 05-06-2015 Bloodline mostly, her mother was a very talented thaumaturge, possible Black Wizard, and Quki's father a retired arcanist. Also, because of Quki's disease, she couldn't ever go out for long periods of time, so most of her early life was stuck on her room reading books about Magic and Eorzea. Of course she ain't no WoL material, but she's pretty talented. RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Mikh'a - 05-06-2015 The power comes naturally... it's the control that he has to work on. ( And boy is he bad at it, too. He has a lot of training in his future. Lots, and lots, and lots of training. ) RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - cuideag - 05-06-2015 I usually like to say that Jajara doesn't have any power but it might be more accurate to say that she doesn't have a solid grasp on controlling what power she might actually have. It is generally assumed that the best things she has going for her are tenacity and discipline: she's put in a lot of time over the years studying and learning and training to become a pugilist and really that's about as far as she's probably going to go officially (unless I do get to do a lot training with an IC MNK someday, an unlikely event given she is more keen on the life of a merchant). I do like to think that she has, however, opened at least one chakra at least once in her life, but probably has no idea that she has done it much less how to do it consciously. Sort of just ... slips into the zone and "wakes up" from that when either things are done or she just can't hold onto it any longer. With Delial I've gone with the bloodline route. Aetherial prowess is a thing in her bloodline though in her own estimation she's been shortchanged. Ultimately it's more a matter of lack of focus: she's had some training here and there, an off-shoot of arcanistry, a little bit of alchemy, and a little bit of low level thaumaturgy though she had never known those magics by those names. It was not until she had come to Limsa Lominsa for any serious length of time that she was introduced to proper arcanistry, built more on mathematics than the old vulgar sigils of her childhood, and she has had a difficult time reconciling the two. What arcanistry she can do is mostly because of memorization and mimicry than a true understanding of the art as it is at its strongest potential. Thaumaturgy, though... that is where her heart truly belongs. She just doesn't know it yet. RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - FreelanceWizard - 05-06-2015 For L'yhta, it's considerable natural talent (from a bloodline, sheer luck of the genetic draw, or what have you) combined with obsessive training and research. When she commits to something, she really commits to it; 12 hours a day or more working on something she cares about isn't out of the norm. This may have been influenced by a Pai Mei like approach to her training from time to time, but mostly, she's just a nerd with far too much energy for her own good. RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Warren Castille - 05-06-2015 I ripped off thematic elements from comics I like and borrowed liberally from the Flawed Human Hero concept. ICly, Warren's just a big guy with a practiced hand. RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Hammersmith - 05-06-2015 Realtalk: He's just a really big guy with poor impulse control, little reason to care, and several decades of siege warfare, brawling, and sabotage work that equates to a nasty in-fighting style and little regard for "Rules of engagement". Hammer fights dirty where he can get away with it. Sometimes in creative and terrifying ways that surprise. That and somehow still having a very sharp mind in spite of several severe concussions. Â His only real power is not dying young and somehow having gotten harder to kill the older he got. To Paraphrase Pratchett: The trick that is practice. RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Spiritual Machine - 05-06-2015 What, no one here gets their powers from friendship? I thought this was a Japanese RPG. RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Sailor July - 05-06-2015 <3 My Little Pony!!! Also, I agree that the friendship = power is more Western. Anime like Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew and other magical girl / magical abilities type series' are based around awakening and or learning powers. /otaku RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - Gegenji - 05-06-2015 (05-06-2015, 10:05 AM)theincubuslord Wrote:(05-06-2015, 10:03 AM)Spiritual Machine Wrote: What, no one here gets their powers from friendship? I thought this was a Japanese RPG. Chachan does! ... Kinda. This may sound dumb, but I kinda have this concept of Variable Defense for Chachan where he's "as tough as he is needed" for situations. In a more fanciful sense, his latent aetheric well (which he can only slightly tap into with his Physic spell to heal bumps and bruises) is used to bolster his endurance and overall durability when those he cares about are in trouble. It still hurts like hell afterward - often needing a healing touch in particularly violent situations - but basically the desire to help his friends allows him to take a potentially fatal attack and dissipate its energy down just enough to make it non-fatal. So yeah. Chachan's defensive powers come from friendship. Meanwhile, Gogon's powers come somewhat to person talent (Arcanima and general intelligence) and the rest from technologically abusing an existing source of knowledge and power. Judge's power comes from ~*spoilers*~ that I don't quite want to disclose quite yet. Do you even Final Fantasy brah?(05-06-2015, 10:03 AM)Spiritual Machine Wrote: What, no one here gets their powers from friendship? I thought this was a Japanese RPG. Actually there are a lot more examples of that trope being played straight from Anime/Manga than Western shows on the TV Tropes page for it. Especially when it comes to those Magical Girl ones--they never quite have the power to shoot the biggest lasers without charging up the ol' Inner Monologue o' Friendship. Captain Planet was way more realistic actually. To defeat pollution, you put together five magical rings, and by their powers combined you summon someone else to deal with it. On topic, I tend to make characters who have limited or typical abilities but the intellect to use them in creative ways. A lot of crazy stuff can be deduced out of the lore for what people are basically capable of if they try. Now that can be more of a challenge than leaning on a more nebulous source of power or experience, but that's part of the fun. Oh, I thought you meant friendship being an actual power, like "pew pew, I wield the power of Friendship!", and not the actual moral boost friendship can give you in a realistic way. RE: Curious about your character's powers.... - LiadansWhisper - 05-06-2015 Liadan's powers are a mixture of natural-born ability and years of training. |
