Re: Site overhaul - Merri - 12-14-2012

While I like the idea of a classic final fantasy-esque cursor, I think it'd be hard to mesh it with the style the forums are shaping up in. Normal cursor would be better, in my opinion.

Other than that, it's shaping up very nicely. Loving all the new additions to the profile page and the overall feel of the site. I feel as though those changes are really going to bring out social interaction on the forums, or at least the forum's capability for such. Having a place to leave little comments for friends and the like is always fun.

My only real complaint would be the white background. It might just be me, but I've always preferred darker and more "soothing" colors for a background. Definitely not a deal breaker for me by any means, of course.

Great work as always, Kylin. :>

Re: Site overhaul - Aysun - 12-14-2012

I'm exactly opposite Merri. Nothing irritates me more than seeing a black background on a website. It hurts my eyes to read and reminds me of websites that high schoolers make. XD

Re: Site overhaul - Gerik - 12-14-2012

Let's compromise on a charcoal colored background~ Maybe a cooler charcoal color.

Like this maybe: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.art-paints.com/Paints/Fabric/Gingers-Cameo/Decorative/Charcoal/Charcoal.gif">http://www.art-paints.com/Paints/Fabric ... arcoal.gif</a><!-- m -->

Re: Site overhaul - Gerik - 12-14-2012

I've always been a fan of slate blue too: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.buncebuildings.com/cms/wp-content/gallery/carport-colors/slate-blue.jpg">http://www.buncebuildings.com/cms/wp-co ... e-blue.jpg</a><!-- m -->

Re: Site overhaul - Merri - 12-14-2012

Yeah, I wouldn't want white text on black, either. That's just as hard to read as black text on white for me. Middle ground is always nice. For example, what we have now is easy on the eyes for me since it's inbetween both the extremes. I like the Charcoal as well. That's actually what I have reddit set to, so I'm quite used to it~

Ehehe.

Re: Site overhaul - Satisiun - 12-14-2012

I'm obviously not any good at giving specific advice or making specific requests on what should or should not be done with the new forum's appearance, but one thought might be to try and go with a theme more in line with how A Realm Reborn looks. The colors, the fonts, the cursor (not that I know what the game's cursor looks like from seeing it up close or anything or anything ... Cactuar ).

I know, a very general suggestion, but just my two cents. I think it would be fitting, and there are ways to work in FFXIV RP motifs at the same time.

Re: Site overhaul - Kylin - 12-16-2012

There will no longer be any custom cursor usage. It'll all be default cursors. As much as I personally like that little novelty stuff, it seems there are a lot of people who don't so it'll get the axe. I've already removed the hand hover effect from the navigation menu on the new site layout.

For those interested in following development, I posted a (link removed) that will be updated over time. Crossed out items are items that are complete. Other items may still be listed as they crop up.

I'm mostly running into issues with the portal/home page/sidebar stuff right now. It's a bit different than phpbb's portal modifications. With help from the forum software programmers, I've managed to finally create a gallery block like the one we have though (and it acts as a slideshow like Enjin instead of the single image we have display now!).

Those concerned with the color, worry not. All colors displayed are the default styling colors and haven't been modified at all yet. The white background will eventually be replaced. Other colors/images will still be tweaked as well prior to launch. The actual graphics are low priority right now for me since I have to ensure basic and advanced features all work properly first. I've considered recycling some old images/backgrounds from the old forums (like the stone background) while also utilizing some new images too. But it depends on whether we get volunteers to help design said graphics or not.

Also, we'll get to have a notification system similar to Enjin's! It'll be fully customizable, so each user can disable/enable whatever they want/don't want notifications on (PM's, wall posts, etc).

Re: Site overhaul - Kylin - 12-19-2012

Progress is slowly being made. There are some things we need to start considering though.

The gallery there is extremely basic. The comment system is simple text format only. Images over the size limit refuse to upload and force the user to resize them first instead of auto-resizing like our present one does. It doesn't have a next/previous image feature, forcing the user to go back to the menu to see the next image. And other little nuances that could get annoying.

My question is, would you all want to upgrade to the full version of their gallery? Unfortunately, it cost money to get the full version. Exactly $75 to be exact. That's a big chunk of change for a single feature, though it is a one time fee. This is likely the only feature that would require shelling out money for. Well, almost. There's another I may pay for but that'll come out of my own wallet.

So do you guys want to just keep the basic version of the new gallery or upgrade to the advanced version? If so, who would be willing to donate to it?

Re: Site overhaul - Eva - 12-19-2012

With as many artists as we have here, and the number of really awesome screenshots we'll all be taking, a souped-up gallery may be worth shelling out a bit extra for. I'd certainly be willing to help contribute so long as others concur that it's a worthwhile addition as well.

Re: Site overhaul - Rhostel - 12-19-2012

I'm happy to just keep using imgur links or whatever.

Re: Site overhaul - Vareal - 12-24-2012

I made a test account on the test forums and at first, the navigation threw me off, but I was able to pick it up in no time. It's definitely more sleek and stylish and I like it. Keep up the good work!

Also, something to consider, but maybe we should look into getting an IRC channel if we don't already have one. People can RP that way as well, with private pm's and chats. and it's a way to get in touch with everyone if you're away from your computer or can't log into the game. I'm a moderator in an IRC channel and I have what I like to call my "IRC Server" that stays on all the time, so if you want to give it a try I can run a channel for you. Just food for thought.

Website related.. I had to post:

Total posts 19999 Total topics 1650 Total images 121 Total members 882

This should be the 20,000th post (well, the ones that haven't been deleted). Go RPC!

Re: Site overhaul - Kylin - 12-31-2012

The website redesign was originally scheduled to go live mid-January. I'm pushing that back to early February now in order to ensure I have plenty of time to get everything as perfect as possible. It will ideally coincide with the RPC's 3 year anniversary and a large advertising campaign as well. February will be a more ideal time anyway since beta will be starting then and interest in the game will begin to peak as a result, causing more attention to the fan sites from newcomers.

A lot of the more challenging things are complete coding-wise. There are just a few more tweaks and additions I need to work on and then I'll be working more on the colors and appearance of things. Realistically, I'll probably be done by mid-January, but waiting 3-4 extra weeks will give me more time to fine-tune things for a smoother launch.

The pre-database purge (deleting users and some posts) will take place mid-January. Please view the topic posted in the Lounge to see the proposed list of deleted users and speak up if you wish to make any alterations to the list.

Edit: A successful test database merge has been completed. All posts and users (not deleted in the upcoming cleanup) will be transferred with no problem. Passwords and private messages will remain in tact. Some user profile information, however, will be purged (such as titles, avatars, and linkshell listings). Emails, AIM, websites, and signatures will transfer. MOST attachments will transfer, though some were unable to in the test process for some reason.
