RE: I'm coming back after leaving last Christmas. But still new. - HonestLeaf - 10-21-2016 I do believe I saw you earlier in the Quicksand! I was mostly character watching though, Honest Leaf is what I do believe, since I lost the translator, is the common tongue for my Roe's name which is Honaebryn Guhtwyb, but it's Honest something. I'd love to get some RP with you too! Character profile is very interesting and well-detailed, I should do that when I get used to RP here. RE: I'm coming back after leaving last Christmas. Oh shit I remember seeing you!! Haha was pretty much just BSing in the Quicksand with a few friends last night. Next time I'll be sure to pop over and say hi and drag them over with me so you get a good amount of RP right off the bat! *pulls Ayaka into the thread* RE: I'm coming back after leaving last Christmas. But still new. - Gegenji - 10-21-2016 Googling for the Roegadyn language points me to this thread, which might help with identifying the name. Going by the name you gave (Honaebryn Guhtwyb), I managed to find this: Honae - ??? Bryn - Spring Guht - Good Wyb - Woman Honae isn't in the dictionary I found, but I'm assuming that would be the word that's supposed to mean "Honest." Especially since it kinda looks like it. And Spring could be taken as Leaf since... y'know, springtime. So Honest-Leaf Good-Woman! Linguistics! ![]() RE: I'm coming back after leaving last Christmas. But still new. - HonestLeaf - 10-21-2016 Geez that's helpful. Thank you very much! I knew it was something about Honest Leaf but... wow, does that mean the name doesn't make sense? xD Crap. RE: I'm coming back after leaving last Christmas. But still new. - Gegenji - 10-21-2016 Most Sea Wolf names look like someone mashed their face into a keyboard anyway, so I'm sure you're fine. ![]() And if anyone gets nitpicky, you could always blame it on a regional dialect or a simplification of the name to be easier on non-Roegadyn tongues. I just like playing with the names, myself - the naming conventions really interest me. That said, I could try to make something close to Honest Leaf (which by itself would be a valid Hellguard name, by the way!) using the dictionary as given if you'd like. Just a quick scan gives me Rheti (Straight/Lawful) and either Brym (Tree) or Blyss (Blossom). So that'd be Rhetibrym (Lawful Tree) or Rhetiblyss (Lawful Blossom). You could also use Loetr (Pure) instead of Rheti for Loetribrym and Loetriblyss, respectively. The last name is also perfectly fine, though there is potential to be had there as well. The Naming Conventions post I linked mentions that Sea Wolf surnames are often Son (-syn)/Daughter (-wyn) of [Father's Name]. So if he was named, I dunno, Fraefolg (Free Bird!)... then it'd be Fraefolgwyn for her surname. That said, there's nothing saying you have to do that. Perhaps she is distancing herself from her father in some way or form, and uses that surname instead. Or maybe she doesn't even know her real father. Or she just wants people to know she's a good woman. It doesn't even have to be her real name - it's not uncommon for people to use aliases. There's a lot of potential information and ideas that can be pulled from just a name, which is why I think fantasy naming conventions interest me so much. |
