Maybe have a meet and greet in the beta or on skype for those not in the beta. We could set something up for our characters: give them all a reason to be there or something. Anyway it's up to you guys. If you think it's a good idea then we'll select a server and a place. If you say your a gladiator than your a gladiator, even though you had to make a lancer so you could be in Gridania. Or whatever.

And don't be afraid to look me up when the game comes out! Or we could rp now. Or I could just babble on about lore for hours and hours leaving you to wonder just when and how I lost my social life. It's up to you!

Well if we RP over Skype, it would be much like an IM to IM kinda thing. Where someone posts something, then other people post reactions. Unlike forum RP (another type of Play by Post or PbP), IM RPs are faster, less detailed, and focus more on dialogue and character interaction than describing settings and emotions. Thus, replies tend to be shorter, instead of the paragraph posts you might see in a forum RP.

A good way to start would be to come up with a general setting first, and let your characters fit into the setting. 

If you want, I can help set up the group. Xenedra also has experience in this, so you can ask her for advice as well.
