RE: New Yoshi-P Interview in Gamescom - Moondoggie - 08-23-2013

There are some arguments for the F2P model but as far as i can see if a game is well managed then they can survive just fine on a subscription model. A lot of the ones who start as sub and move to F2P are just poorly run and slow with rolling out content and patches to keep people returning. Eventually they move to F2P and put the game on life support. My main problem with F2P is that it drags down the quality even further since instead of creating new content they concentrate on providing overpriced trinkets, buffs and advantages to make up for the lack of subscription money. I'd hate for the game to be torn apart with individual payments to use half the stuff in it. Sure you can have an optional subscription service still like some games have done for benefits but these don't make up for the overall drop in quality control.

If a game wants to have a cash shop and whatever else with optional vanity items fine but in the F2P model it becomes too much of a priority as a major money maker. If a game is good and stays good people will pay for it as long as it benefits them to do so.

On a side note that man has beautiful hair. I sort of want to touch it to see what it feels like.

Definitely agree with both of you! Thumbsup

RE: New Yoshi-P Interview in Gamescom - Ellie - 08-23-2013

I completely agree with Yoshi-P's sentiment that Free-to-Play models are for publishers who want a return investment on the product they're funding quickly. I feel like that's the reason it's become more prevalent, too. Publishers who want their money back now and don't care about the long term health of the game.

I don't like free-to-play because I feel like it detracts from the game. Either I'll have to worry about not having access to the good parts of the game, or I'll have to deal with the game pestering me to buy items from the cash shop, or I'll have to wait longer for updated content to come out. I'd rather just pay a monthly fee and get everything.

Free to play also lays down the welcome mat for more RMT. What better way to encourage gil sellers than to take away the cost of subscribing to the game in order to farm and powerlevel?

To be honest, I like FFXIV's current spin the cash shop system. The game rewards for subscribing x number of days not only encourages you to pay ahead for subscriptions, but it advertises itself without being annoying. It also paces itself really well.

Two new items every month would be a pathetic trickle for a cash shop, but you don't even notice it when it's touted as a subscriber reward. You're waiting for more, but you're not thinking "geez, why don't they release more stuff", you're thinking "wow, I can't wait to see what we'll get in another three months!" It's genius! Smile

I'd be very surprised to see this turn into a free-to-play game. Maybe if the subscription rate drops so low that they can't afford to keep the game up otherwise, but at that point I'd think that turning it free-to-play would just delay the inevitable shutting down.

I'm more comfortable paying a monthly subscription fee rather than being tempted into purchasing gimmicky cosmetic items in a cash shop. As a role-player and as someone who likes to dabble in every aspect of any given MMO I've been disgusted by temporary 'optional' items appearing in MMO cash shops, many of which are then never seen again.

I also find it hilarious to note that many players in games such as GW2 criticise the subscription model of other MMO's and yet pay much more towards cash shop items per month than they ever would on the average monthly subscription fee. As for accusations in regards to the P2P model 'dying'? Utter nonsense - at least three upcoming major MMO's are due to launch with a monthly subscription fee: FFXIV, The Elder Scrolls Online and Wildstar.

Do you mean Korel Fried Chocobo?  I kind of like the fact that housing will take some effort to get, and isn't something that you get just for playing.  Of course I did start out in Eve, so I'm used to and enjoy needing to work for stuff.

I had two Eve kills-one a newb in a rookie ship who kept stealing my roids while I was mining with a retriever in low sec, and the other the CEO of a corp that war-dec'd us.  IIRC that was the ONLY kill in that war.

RE: New Yoshi-P Interview in Gamescom - Jove - 08-23-2013

Ahah, I don't think we would have been friends in EVE, I would have had no hesitation shooting a retriever in lowsec, or anything else for that matter Big Grin
Although I've always been polite about it and at least somewhat honourable.

I think my entire EVE experience is basically this:

I've never played Eve myself, though having stuff to work towards is always refreshing in modern MMO's. I'm a firm believer in ensuring that every player has an enjoyable experience regardless of their chosen style but at the same time I don't believe in the 'no player left behind' mentality that leads to high end achievements being available to everyone for little effort.
