RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - Salinas - 10-14-2014 I'm glad that someone also considered using Nophica's tits as in-game profanity.  Bless your souls. That is all. RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - C'kayah Polaali - 10-14-2014 I love Thal's Balls, which will happily pop out of C's mouth anytime a good curse is needed. Lately I've been trying to bring the rest of the twelve into it, too, with a little bit of surreality. There's something surreal about well-done vulgarity, so this appeals to me quite a bit. "Nymeia's Pustulant Knees", that sort of thing. RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - TheLastCandle - 10-14-2014 Got to agree with some other posters, that "real world" swearing kinda breaks my immersion. I much prefer the ones used by NPCs in game, but Yvelont rarely if ever uses any of them. Generally too calm and collected to resort to such. RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - Edgar - 10-14-2014 Occasionally my characters will burst into these little quips, such as "Bleeding hearts of the world unite" and "sevens hells bells ringing in my ears". I'm not sure if that counts as vulgarity, but they're certainly expressions of frustration and anguish. RE: Vulgarity! I try to avoid "real world" cursing as well. Damns, hells, shits and shites are all used freely. F-bombs are devoid for obvious reasons, but I don't think it feels right to use them. RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - Blue - 10-14-2014 Some of my characters use the rather racist insult "Son of a Seeker" or "Son of a Nuhn", an Eorzean version of what we use in Real Life to point at someone whose mother has tendency to sleep with many men (Except, of course, the Eorzean version implies the father does, instead). I kinda sat there staring at my screen for a second then just started laughing. RE: Vulgarity! Hee hee. I like this. RE: Vulgarity! I just use "son of a coeurl." "You coeurl!" ![]() I may have dropped a "Thal's Balls and Oschon's Staff!" at one point this past week... RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - TheLastCandle - 10-14-2014 "By the Navigator's saucy fishnets!" RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - Aya - 10-14-2014 This raises another issue for me that I've never really been clear on and that is the existence of regional languages. Aya does not swear, but I like to imagine when she does that it is in Ishgardian and sounds rather lyrical to the ear. RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - Illira - 10-14-2014 Illira's used "Son of a Sandworm" a couple times to insult people. Rolls off the tongue nice :p RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - K'nahli - 10-14-2014 I try to avoid swearing unless the scene/emotion really demands it. While I do sometimes swear in real life, I don't think it's the nicest thing to hear so I don't particularly like to read much of it either. If I were trying to portray a character that is not very cultured or however you may call it, then I think I'd still manage to do so with softer, lore-friendly phrases rather than repeatedly throwing vulgarity in one's face to remind them of the fact. Having said that, there was a character I made but never played that was certainly going to be the very rude kind but I was partly thrown off with the idea of having such a horrible character interfering with my friend's kind and innocent one. I know that's a bit of a bad reason but I was OOCly protective of said character because I am a fan, hahaha ;;; Regardless and from an objective point of view, I struggle to see K'nahli swearing. It's difficult for me to imagine such crude phrases making their way into an isolated, tribal structure and becoming commonplace. As for Andre... well he is a noble whom is incredibly polite and well-tempered. He'd have to be under a lot of stress to find himself uttering a real swear. RE: Vulgarity! (VULAGR NSFW Discussion!) - Chillsmack - 10-14-2014 Doendraga has some colorful vernacular when it comes to expressing himself or describing things; while others may curse like a sailor, Doendraga is a sailor. He has a potty mouth, and he artistically paints some vivid imagery with his profanities (which is common) thanks to an articulate mind. He also tends to blaspheme flagrantly without any real regard to how offensive his expletives may be: some favorites include "Thaliak's man-tits!" (when complaining about stupidity) and "Crossed-eyed whores!" (when things just aren't going his way) That said, I tend to refrain from RL curse words mostly because I feel the majority of them don't fit into the setting, like the F-bomb, not because I personally don't like to use them (the reverse is actually true). Most RL curse words that don't have an older equivalent to use seem too anachronistic for me, despite the fantasy setting that incorporates technology and more advanced standards of living as opposed to say, real middle ages. |
