Need Highlander Help! - Madda - 03-02-2015

Es Madda!

Madda was making a Highlander person and needed some help / critique on her bio and stuffs.

She was an orphan while growing up in Al Mihgo, wanting to be strong so that she could be liked and loved in hope that she would meet her parents. One fighter found her swinging a wooden sword and dragged her off after learning she wanted to become a warrior. He trained and became a parent to her until she realized, around age 20, that fighting was not for her. She abandoned her training and opened a free house near the entrance of Al Mihgo, a haven for those without a home or food. It became popular among many children, with some drifters stopping by to stay the night. The woman herself spent many days tending to chores and such, viewing each newcomer as one of her own.

After the fall of the Highlander's home, the house became engulfed in flames in the attack of the Garlanians. The end result is Yvonne being pulled from the reckage, while most of those inside (about 90% or so) perished. Driven to punish those responsible for the destruction of her homeland and "children", she returned to her training, wanting the strength she so wished to possess when she was a child.

Hrm. The thing that stands out to me is the age -- if she was still in Ala Mhigo before the fall at age 20, then currently she'd be at least 40 years old, since the Garleans took the city-state 20 years ago.

Yvonne sounds very much like an Elezen name to me too, but names are always something we can make work!

Good luck with the Highlander and have funnn!

I would recommend reworking the story away from the "meet her parents" ambition. It just seems like an ambition that's hard for other characters to relate to. I would suggest going with something like that (assuming you also intend for her to be a bit younger given the 20 year ago fall of Ala Mhigo):

Madda's parents were part of the Ala Mhigan resistance against Gargemald and died for the cause. A family friend took her and escaped to Little Ala Mhigo when she was still young. He or she trained her in combat with a sword, expecting Madda to someday be driven by the desire to take revenge on Gargemald for the loss of her parents.

Eventually she realized that the sword wasn't for her and that she wanted to help people in the same circumstance she found herself in at a young age. To fulfill that wish Madda started an orphanage in Thanalan.

When Dalamud collided with Eorzea thanks to the Garleans her refuge was destroyed. Thus the calamity left her with a reason to return to the path set before her long ago.

Yeah, it was more to go along with why she wanted to be a warrior at such a young age. She just believed her parents didn't love her and abandoned her because she was too weak for them.

But the idea is interesting! Madda likes it very much. =3

But how old would this make her then? Since Madda's no good with timelines yet x nx

(forum formatting ish bad.)

It's a lot easier to work around the Calamity as a jumping-off point for a story, since it was only 5-6 years ago depending on where we're currently sitting according to the MSQ.

Could reasonably be in your mid-20s in that case; Perhaps Bestlander was just about to get the permits to open his orphanage and right after acquiring the deed to the land, it got blowed up. Maybe he's in his late thirties and was operating it, and the loss of the building was a turning point for him.

RE: Need Highlander Help! - IvikBlack - 03-02-2015

If her parents were killed in Ala Mhigo by garleans, this could've happened anywhere from 20 years ago to 5 years ago, since the Ala Mhigan resistance has been operating for a long time. Minfilia's father was part of that resistance.
She'd have to have been an adult to try and open an orphanage while being a child during the actual events, so I'd say she could be anywhere from 25 to 35.
