Server/Rp/Leveling Inquiries - GamerGirl87 - 04-14-2015

Hi! I'm 'GamerGirl' from various mmorpgs and I finally am getting around to checking out FF14. I've played 7-10, YEARS ago, RP'd in WoW for 10 years, and ESO for the last year. Also a tad of GW2 and SWTOR.

I'm entirely lore blank when it comes to FF though, and I am also not even sure if the RP community is really large enough to be of interest to be. (Rp being the main reason I would play this).

So I thought I'd throw this quick hello up and see if I could get some tips/advice etc.

Which servers have the most/best rp?
When is the best time to join the serve if it is blocked/full?
Is rp very public or more guild focused? (Like cliques)
How long does it take for the game to get going?
Are there any level requirements for rping in this game?
Is leveling mainly done through quests or can it also be done through mob grinds/dungeons etc.?

Any other advice, tips etc would be welcomed!

I have yet to actually join the game as I am still not sure where I would want to put myself. I tend to only play and rp 1 toon at a time as well, so multi-server isn't really my thing. I am very into anime and cosplay as well and I'll be cosplaying Dagger next year at the conventions I attend. Smile So any guilds/people with those sort of interests I would also be happy to meet.

Thanks!

-GG

In my opinion:

Balmung has the best RP. Most of this forum is Balmung-based. There are some from other servers, but their numbers are fewer and more in between.

From my understanding, an hour after server maintenance, the locks are down. Though maybe if you were around at like 4am EST, you might be able to get a character in on Balmung while the server pop is low.

RP is fairly public. Yes, there are cliques and some people like to just hang out in certain player taverns, but Ul'dah almost always has RP going on.

The story kicks off fairly well. Though you can't travel between cities via airship until the level 15 quest.

No level requirements for RP. Even the Grindstone, probably one of the biggest dueling events in Balmung, is done entirely through RNG. So a level 1 RPer in Ul'dah can go out there and presumably have a chance at winning.

Questing and leves are the main ways of leveling. Dunegones do it too, and once you have a few unlocked, you can do 1 random dungeon a day for extra XP. Bonuses if you're the 'needed role of the day', which seems to be Tank a lot lately. Never DPS. Lord knows DPS is a dime a dozen.

But the Quicksand and the area around it is the main RP hub of the game. The inns in Limsa and Gridania aren't as populated, through there are people who RP throughout the city, you just gotta hunt em down.

Balmung, followed by Gilgamesh

Balmung
  • is almost always full
  • (and full of RP).
  • I've seen people get lucky around 3AM-6AM PST.
  • People try to track getting on here. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=8957
  • Populated areas for walk-up RP are "Tavern" areas. If you want to see the densest population, try the Quicksand, in Ul'dah.
  • RP is very Open-World, but there are Guild (called Free Companies here) and Linkshells (chat groups) too
I'm not so sure about Gilgamesh. I'm heard it's more Free Company-centric, and the open-world isn't as available.

You can technically RP right away! HOWEVER! You're stuck in the city you start in until lv15 story quest. I'd recommend getting at least that far, since you'll unlock the airship/travel and can see more of the game.

There are 3 main ways to level in this game. You'll have to do a mix of them on your first class/job by playing through the Main Story Quest (MSQ for short)
  1. Quests - Main Story, Sidequests, Levequests (instanced quests just for you)
  2. FATEs - random map battles. You can simply run into them to engage
  3. Dungeons
There is a free trial available too! However it has some chat restrictions and trade restrictions to prevent RMT. If you want to get a general feel, I'd try to make a trial account, explore Ul'dah, and check out a few of the events. I believe it lasts two weeks? It caps at lv20, but you can explore multiple classes by then, and the full world map (although some areas would be very dangerous).

QFT

Anyways, completely forget about Gilgamesh, it RP is pretty much the sole reason for being in the game, just head straight to Balmung or I doubt you'll last 2 months.

The answer to all your questions are in other posts. There is a webpage that notifies what servers are open for new characters.
Come to Balmung, its bloody good for RP. Nothing is ever perfect but RP is very much alive and there is a broad range of types and styles.

I came as a filler before wildstar release, and am still here.... I never even bought wildstar.

Hello! I'm new to RPing so I can't help you with those questions. But I can answer others for you.

Is rp very public or more guild focused? (Like cliques)
From what I've witnessed MORE goes on in guilds/private chats but there is plenty that is public or going on in taverns etc. Just take a look at the Events section on here. Plenty of events open for anyone to attend, and the ones I've been to I enjoyed!

How long does it take for the game to get going?
Hmm difficult question. I loved the game from the beginning but only liked it more once I got into the story. I didn't feel I 'had' to be max level or anything like that to enjoy it. This is really a personal thing, though, I'd say just... try it and find out.

Are there any level requirements for rping in this game?
No, as pointed out you may need to reach certain levels to access other areas but it doesn't take much time at all to reach level 15.

Is leveling mainly done through quests or can it also be done through mob grinds/dungeons etc.?
I did most of my road to 50 just from doing quests and the main story, mixed in with my challenge log (weekly tasks to reach, like 'do 3 dungeons' and so on, then it gives you a bonus). Dungeons come along as PART of the story, as well as other things introduced to you like Guildhests, PVP, Guildleves, so I would say however you best like to level, there's a way to do it.

My personal opinion is just to pick up and try. I think it's nice to come to a game fresh rather than researching, more exciting!

I hope that answers your questions! If you decide to come to Balmung, do give me a /wave if you ever need a hand. I'm a bit into costuming, not done much for a good few years but have a far-off dream of doing some FFXIV cosplays. If you're like me you'll probably be tempted to make some of the great outfits in this game (Kan-E-Senna is one I'd really like to try!)
