Coining Eorzean Terms - Edgar - 08-27-2015

So, we all know that despite all the dialogue being written in modern day English, Eorzea uses its own unique vernacular and terminology. Due to differences in culture and history, many terms we use today in real life cannot be used in Eorzea. Because of this, I have set about creating Eorzean analogues to various real life terms, phrases, etc, and I've decided to set up this thread to share these with you, as well as hear what analogues you have coined for use in Eorzean speech.

Mighan Victory: Analogue for Phyrric Victory. Coined by Edda and I during one of our rps, a Mighan Victory refers to a victory in which very little was gained, and even more lost. The reference comes from how Ala Migho lost its dictatorship, only to lose any and all freedom to Garlemald in the process.

Yalms: T'is the Eorzean replacement for meters, or years I suppose. Can't really do the conversion though.

A yalm is 3 fulms.

A fulm is 12 ilms.

These were basically taken from the Imperial units, the USA being one of the last countries refusing to use Metric.

So a malm is a mile, yalm a yard, fulm a foot and ilm an inch.

Same with a ponze a pount and onze ounce.

You can find discussion of units on the Lore board over on the Official FFXIV forums.

Hmm...one could replace all the sayings that have to do with cats and replace them with Miqo'te.  Yes, yes, I know that Miqo'te aren't really cats but they look a bit like cats.

Curiousity killed the Keeper?
I've had characters say things like "When in Garlemald..." and "Pardon my Lominsan."
I see "That's my two gil on the subject" used often, even OOC!

Oh, RP with Hard Speech Lominsans...

OOC and IC, I have no idea what they're talking sometimes.

I would think that it may make more sense to use 'coeurl' rather than Miqo'te. Especially since you have the hard 'c' there so you still get the fun alliteration of things like 'Curiosity killed the coeurl.'

Hmm.

Seldi says these things, though I don't know if they're things that people would actually say in Eorzea:
  • "(To) the void with you!" = "(To) Hell with you!" / "Damn you!"
  • "Void sent" = "Damned" (As a noun or adjective)
  • "Nunh" = Basically, "Man Whore". Not a compliment. (Interestingly, does not have a word for the female equivalent, though she doesn't approve of that, either).

There's a few other ones she uses, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

RE: Coining Eorzean Terms - Miko Shiroi - 08-27-2015

Heh. I think I've come up with a few of these, mostly just plays on existing things and replacing them with Eorzean references. For example, a "White Russian" drink became a "White Ala Mhigan," and is my character's favorite alcoholic beverage.

True facts - I guess someone let the coeurl out of the bag.

I've replaced "classic french braid" with "classic Ishgardian braid" recently. So that's a thing.

EDIT: Also used "Mother Cockatrice" in place of "Mother Hen."

RE: Coining Eorzean Terms - I'nhalki - 08-27-2015

My favorite Eorzeanism comes from (I think?) the Lv25 fishing quest from Sisipu.

English: "One man's trash is another man's treasure."

Eorzea: "One man's marlin is another man's mudskipper."

Not a lot of flavor there—seeing as we do have marlins and mudskippers on Earth—but I am really fond of it.

RE: Coining Eorzean Terms - D'aito Kuji - 08-27-2015

Can't have your Dodo and eat it too.

More gold for your gil. (more bang for your buck)

Cold Dodo (cold turkey)

Jump to the action (cut to the chase)

17th bell shadow (5 o'clock shadow)

Chain your chocobos for a minute! (hold your horses)

Jumped the blade (jumped the gun)

Sprigganese Court (kangaroo court)

Sacred Dodo (sacred cow)

Tail wagging the coeurl (tail wagging the dog)

The whole nine yalms (yards)

Meh.  There aren't all that good but I can see myself saying "chain your chocobo, what did they say about me?"

*Schrödinger's* Coeurl?
Perhaps there's an npc name that would work for it, but I don't know off the top of my head.

"long of ear" used to refer to male elezens ear, implying the size of their genitals. Typically used in Ishgard, but it might be a common phrase among elzens

Ex: "Oh he's quite handsome and long of ear as well!"
