Superpowers for the jobless - Seriphyn - 09-08-2015

So, I was thinking. Individuals like Raubahn and Ilberd (as we have seen) appear to be very powerful, but are not paladins, warriors, or dark knights.

This got me wondering that those of the jobs aren't necessarily more powerful, just merely more specialized. I got slightly angsty over how flashy the actions for DRK were, how they conveyed a sense of power that a class like PLD just didn't have. So, reconciling the idea they are just a specific profession, I began entertaining the idea that one could have no job, but still be of equal strength.

So, while monks might have chakras and ninjas their mudras, an experienced gladiator might/would still be able to pull out some superpowered aetherical feat...just the actions wouldn't be so defined in a school of combat as the Jobs are. Thoughts?

RE: Superpowers for the jobless - Blue - 09-08-2015

Rather than a black mage, I RP Jet'a as a Cryomancer. His fire and thunder thaumaturgy are extremely weak, but in turn he focused his studies and practice on the element of ice. As a result, while his magic is not as distructive as the one of a black mage wielding the control of fire and striking thunders, he has instead developed a major control of the element of ice, which allows him to ICly do things such as summon certain shapes of ice (protective barriers, stalactites to stab opponents, ice blades to turn his staff into a spear --though mind you, he doesn't have the physical strength of a real lancer), and some neat trucks such as freezing clueless henchmen's faces and stopping their breathing by obstructing their orifices with ice.

That's a specialization that I decided to go for with his character. And no, he's not going to sing Let It Go. Just... let that joke... go.

RE: Superpowers for the jobless - Val - 09-08-2015

Without a doubt they could. Job is just an in-game template for a specialize class, anyway. In RP, I don't think people would refer to them directly as "jobs" so much as as what they physically consider themselves to be. Vallois, for example, wields an axe and can do aetherical attacks with it, but he doesn't call himself a marauder or a warrior. He's just a guy with an axe.

RE: Superpowers for the jobless - Unnamed Mercenary - 09-08-2015

It's also important [for me] to know that at the time FFXIV came out, there were no "jobs" in the game. At all. You had classes and that was it. Jobs were added in patch 1.21, after MASSIVE class changes in 1.20.

Part of the reason we see NPCs being so awesome somtimes is because they're following the lore instead of the battle system mechanics. They do not agree.

I think if explained on how the ability is acquired properly. It can be well explained like Maybe learning how to channel aether into your sword after a year or so of studying magic and using your blade in the place of a wand?

RE: Superpowers for the jobless - Zezeki - 09-08-2015

I just do whatever.

RE: Superpowers for the jobless - Aaron - 09-08-2015

Aaron IC can do summons (or arcanism if people really feel the need to get technical wuth terms to bring forth object that aren't you to fight), but he also wields blades from daggers to greatsword & is naturally affiliated with the ice element.

If jobs were anything that defined every action in the game then I and probably 80% of the PCs need to change something.

That. And -hisses- Ice....magic.

RE: Superpowers for the jobless - Caspar - 09-09-2015

I figure it's fine. People play things that do not fit into the classes, let alone jobs, of ffxiv all the time and it seems to work for them.

RE: Superpowers for the jobless - Knight Kat - 09-09-2015

Honestly, I've just about given up trying to judge what characters should and should not be capable of in this game. Especially after the MSQ cut-scene at the end of 2.55.

Different RP/plot circles have unwritten rules about what scale character abilities should be on. For someone like me that ends up getting involved with several different groups on one character, it can be hard to decide how far I should take my character when it comes to ability. I like to clearly see where the standard is. I like boundaries being clearly defined because I value their importance in a story.

This game just does not clearly define boundaries. Magic this, aether that.

For my character, she's a Lancer. I'm never making her a Dragoon for story reasons. So my issue was trying to think of how her skills could still be relevant in a world of guns, mages and magitek.

I like the idea of her being a bit antiquated. She's a traditional hunter of the Twelveswood. However, based on inspiration from the antagonist of Lancer Class Quest-line, Foulques, I've decided that there is enough evidence to support the development of some magic/aether that even Lancers can learn to use.

Kiht doesn't have the aether capacity or training to be a mage. But, with the help of a Thaumaturge mentor, she's been training for months to use her aether's ice affinity in order to use mild forms of ice magic along with her combat abilities (yes, more ice magic... I wasn't expecting so many others to use it too, but I guess that means it's not such a bad idea).

However, it should be noted that I haven't expressed this ability in her RP outside of my FC group. This is due to the fear that it will be seen as breaking an unspoken boundary. But in my interpretation of the lore, what Kiht has learned isn't lore-breaking.
