Dragons. - Sophia_Grave - 09-04-2015

To be specific, what do we know of dragons from dragons' perspective? We all know what the Eorzeans think of them, but what actual concrete lore do we have about their culture, abilities, etc?

I recall some, but I'm certain there's more.
-Dragons (the biggest ones, anyway) seem to take names from Norse Mythology (Ratatotskr, Nidhogg, Midgardsomr).
-Male and female dragons have little to no sexual dimorphism.
-Dragons age so differently that they perceive just about everything differently than the races of man.

Like I said, I know I've missed some good details around Anyx Trine or the Churning Mists. Has anyone picked up anything good?

RE: Dragons. - V'aleera - 09-04-2015

The greater dragons/ wyrms (IE Svara, Aiatar, Isgebind etc.) can all live to be roughly 1000 years old, and over the course of their lives they will evolve in individual and distinct patterns both physically and mentally. This results in the varied colorations of their flesh/scales, and in the variation in their abilities and elemental affinities. This information comes from the Blue Dragon Triple Triad card description.

Also, you can probably learn a lot by doing the sidequests/talking to NPCs around Anyx Trine.

This. Anyx Trine is by far the best source. Off the top of my head, what I remember from there:

*Young dragons take a VERY long time to mature. They are still in the 'whelp' stage at 30 years old. Wyverns are apparently kind of a juvenile stage, I think?

*Young dragons cannot hunt for themselves, but elder dragons train them rigorously nevertheless by sparring them against stronger foes.

*Dragons mistrust medicine/alchemy. If they are injured, they prefer to try and heal naturally, and if they die it is simply "the way of nature". An elezen hermit lived near the summit of Sohm Al who tried to introduce them to medicine and gained a few converts, but the science of dragon medicine was largely lost after his death.

*Dragon breath can turn stone molten. The stone can potentially remain molten for centuries (?)

*Dragons collect, bury, and mourn their dead. A larger dragon will always arrive to carry off the corpse of a smaller dragon. (CWH quests). They are apparently interred in Mourn, if not volcanoes in general.

...I don't remember the rest. It's been a while. >.> But I highly recommend doing the sidequests there. It's fantastic lore.

Pretty sure Wyverns are just another species/type of dragon. The wyverns we dealt with were juvenile but talk to some other ones around that area - or there are some new mobs (such as Elder Wyvern and some other varieties of wyverns). This is sort of the same as an Avis or Dragonfly are another type/species of dragon.

And man that hierarchy of dragons - sending countless dragonflies to die like cannon fodder.

RE: Dragons. - Yunas13 - 09-06-2015

What about when Dragons and Elezen lived in harmony? I got to thinking about it today and wondered in that 1000 year span did any elezen/dragons ever have children? I think from the MSQ dealing with the Inquisitor in Coerthas that he was a dragon in disguise so could that have been possible? I would love to learn more about the dragons' lore as they are one of my favorite mythological creatures and I don't always see them as the bad guys as we know that there are good dragons out there too! Smile

RE: Dragons. - Virella - 09-06-2015

Well technically we are all dragons waiting to happen back up in Ishgard, but... I'd figure we will find more and more out the more patches will drop Smile

The Inquisitor was an actual dragon simply under a glamour. That doesn't really mean half-breed babies are going to suddenly come into existence, most species can't breed with one another and create actual offspring or viable offspring - I mean I'd hardly think they could procreate even if...

They're not always the bad guys I mean literally that is the 3.0 storyline.

RE: Dragons. - Yunas13 - 09-06-2015

With Eorzea or the FFXIV world is so large that there could be say a hyur/dragon child out there! Sad We don't have an encyclopedia and it is so hard to come up with a story to try and stick to as the lore is so widespread and not a lot on the races. (I might be struggling because I'm not a 1.0 player, I started at the 2.0 launch) I've got an idea I want to pursue and I'm working on the beginning in my head. I love dragons and the Au Ra are the perfect race for me to follow this idea. I am happy that I've got an idea that I feel excited to write as I realized I needed to write for my own enjoyment, if I post it, I know not everyone is not going to agree but I will still be loyal to the game and lore.

I was so happy to have the first expansion be focused on dragons and we get a particular minion later in the MSQ before the expansion to journey with us. I REALLY REALLY wish that the SMN gets a Leviathan-Egi as I love that summons as it is like a dragon, but more water based. Smile

RE: Dragons. - Aaron - 09-06-2015

None of the dragons are named Spyro.

I looked everywhere.

The thing is, Dragons and mankind are two different species.  All of the playable races are actually the same species (per the devs), but Dragons are an entirely separate species.  I don't see how breeding would be possible.

This. While we do have evidence of halfbreeds in game from a number of sources, I feel the biological difference between the playable races and the dravanians is just too extreme. Like how you can crossbreed a horse and a donkey, but not say a horse and a dog, irl. Any attempt at crossbreeding between the 'human' races and a dravanian would likely just end in either nothing, or too many physical and genetic issues for the offspring to survive, if it even makes it through the birth.

I'm all for people doing what they want with lore, totally. Rp is something people do to enjoy and have fun with, and everyone should be allowed to rp what they want, so long as its not harming anyone else, which this certainly isn't. But playing a dravanian myself, a halfbreed dragon isn't something I would really want to meet icly, or interact with in roleplay.

Oh everyone's welcome to rp as they please, I guess I just don't really think it's something (at least in my all understanding I have with the lore) in the realm of a realistic possibility. The species are different to such an extent that it isn't the same as say an elezen and midlander having a kid - children who I think might end up just being infertile even if viable for life. They're completely different species, unlike the other races of eorzea.

Write for your own enjoyment, totally, but it's not really something I can see easily validated through the ingame lore. Playing a glamoured dravanian too it's kinda hard to see this type of stretch being something I'd want to or even be able to incorporate into my rp. I can guess people who are heavily involved in Dragoon rp might have a similar issue. (that said you might also want to look into dragoon, heretic and dragon blood lore stuff it might be interesting given well, people basically turning into dragons or gaining particular traits/connections).

If you're gonna go for it then sure go for it - but I'd also say there's a lot of pitfalls with the idea as well given how

In a MSQ discussion of Shiva, one of the characters stated that it would be physically impossible for an elezen (or any other playable race) to mate with a dragon. In addition, the biological differences are far to great for any offspring to be viable.

Stumbled upon this earlier today. Figured I'd drop it here.

Dravanian Wrote:Thanks to tinolqa for finding this Dengeki article about an interview for the design of Aery which included some interesting lore! I was able to request from Anonymoose and Vik Vicious to offer a translation. This was an amateur speed translation so there may be some errors!

– What direction did you take with this dungeon’s concepts?

The basic concept was, “the place where Nidhogg and his brood live.” This is where the scenerio’s middle areas peaked, so we wanted it to be a little scary.

– When the people of Ishgard become dragons, is there a general role for what they will become?

In terms of how powerful they will become, it goes in order Aevis -> Syricta -> Diresaur. Think of it as depending on how much of the “factor of the dragon” they inherited.

Also, drinking “dragons blood” alone has no effect. It has to be “blood poured with great magick.”

Drinking the blood of a defeated dragon, or even taking draconian medicines, there will be no effect.

In the right doses it is perfectly safe, so adventurers and even the people of Ishgard should have peace of mind when using draconian medicines.

– In the FATE chain, Darkscale refers to “Nidhogg-sama.” So, he’s positioned below Nidhogg - not one of the seven celestial dragons?

Correct. Darkscale is not among the seven celestial dragons, he is of Nidhogg’s kin.

Midgardsormr revealed in his dialogue that after the Seven had grown, they flew all over the world. Hraesvelgr, Nidhogg, and Ratatoskr chose to live on the Three Great Continents. Bahamut and Tiamat decided to go to the southern continent of Meracydia.

The names and whereabouts of the last two have been decided, but will not be revealed until later.

– The terminology for dragon (kin / follower / family) is often used, but what do they include?

It’s explanation is included in quests and such, but it’s spread out and can be confusing so I’ll go over it again. There are three basic groups in the “dragon broods.” They are the “genuine dragons,” the “people who became dragons,” and the “monsters who submit to dragon magicks.”

The “genuine dragons” are evolving creatures, so their figures will vary - but they are all intelligent.

The “people who become dragons” are the aevis and syricta and such.

Finally, we have drakes and biasts, dragonflies, and tyrannosaurs. They lack intelligence. They are basically bound, mindless monsters. The intense magickal power of the dragons causes them to submit, and though they obey and work together, they are not genuine dragons.

– In Errn Scorh, dragons appear one after another from the [glowing things]. What is that? How does that work from an in-game world-view? Egg Hatching + Hypergrowth Mechanisms? Summoning?

For dragons, across hundreds of years you have active phases and dormant phases. You can interpret these as devices that protect the body during a dormant stage. They were slumbering in that place and suddenly aroused by the magicks of Nidhogg. The sudden battle was very unfortunate for them, wouldn’t you say?

– For the seven celestial dragons, it is said that their eyes are the wellspring of their power. Is this only true for the seven?

The amassing of aether in the eyes is a characteristic of the whole dragon family. If one lived as long as one of the Seven Celestial Dragons, they might, in theory, have comparable power.

– Finally if you know something that “hasn’t been told in the game,” by all means, tell us!

It’s become a bit of a rumor that, in the Aery, you can see what look like debris of Allagan restraints. But that just blew off of Dalamud in the Seventh Calamity. It’s an interesting fate that one of the things that once bound Bahamut would end up here, isn’t it?
