Troubleshooting - Cant delete own posts/threads. - MilanaMina - 12-08-2015

I'm suprised there's no troubleshooting or bug report for these forums. I'm trying to delete an old thread that I started, and I'm being told I don't have permission to do it. My account is verified according to the site. So what gives?

Here? I think there was a big change recently where it's been set so you can't delete anything you create. I believe the idea was to make people think more clearly about what they're saying/posting and the consequences it can have, rather than just doing brainvomit on the forums when you're drunk/tired and risk offending people.

So...unless I'm mistaken, it's no bug.

It's been part of the RPC's settings from the beginning that you can't delete your own posts or threads.

There is a way to report your own posts (spam/deletion/moving) and the mods will get to it.

Otherwise, there is a link to the board team for you to PM if you want to have them delete/edit threads.

Please refer to the rules section, here. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=9032

I would be....very surprised to even see a standard user have access to the delete button in any of the sections. (Because that would indeed be a bug!)

It's been my understanding that users deleting their own content has never been allowed on the RPC, and it's been like that since at least the time I registered over a year ago. It should be noted that the whole "expanded rules" section was a later development based on user behavior being increasingly hostile around the time of writing, where the moderation staff at that time had talks and discussions about what could be done to curb such behavior. It's been hit and miss, but that's life.

When the moderation team tried to remind users that blanking/editing in a negative manner was something reportable/actionable, it mostly blew up. But that's not to say users cannot edit their posts.

The editing/blanking rule covers the following cases:
  • to remove all content
  • editing to retract a negative opinion from later posts
  • editing to retract an argument that was responded to ("I didn't say that!" posts)
  • blanking posts so as to destroy the conversation in a thread
  • other malicious edits
If your posts/threads aren't trying to do any of the above, I'd recommend enclosing the old post/information in a spoiler and/or reporting the posts/threads to the moderation team for review. Depending on the content of the thread, it will either be removed or you'll receive a PM from the staff on why it was not removed. (There are cases where while the thread opener no longer wishes to be part of a thread, other users are continuing the discussion. The moderation staff typically handles that one of two ways: 1) Keeps it open. 2) Closes the thread and asks that users open a new thread for the discussion, depending on content.)

The single most important reason (but not the sole important reason) why members on RPC have never been permitted to delete their own threads is that, often times, a thread takes on a life of its own and comes to hold meaning for folks other than the original poster.

Imagine if you could delete a lore discussion thread you made in which many generous people provided extensive lore tidbits and explanations. That's a community resource that would simply vanish. Or imagine if one pariticipant in an In-Character roleplay thread suddenly decided to delete that thread, and the other participants hadn't the chance to archive posts upon posts of fascinating character development.

Such incidents would constitute abuse cases. The preventative measure of choice here on RPC is simply that users cannot delete their own content short of "blanking" their posts by way of the Edit button. Blanking, at least, does not negatively impact the writings of others. For outliers where deletion is actually justified, reports or PMs to moderators suffice.

You can't delete, even editing to remove things can lead to formal warnings. There is a whole system of negative marking for those deemed to be violating the rules. For good or I'll that is the nature of things here, yet we all accept this for the continued survival of the RPC.

Your only option is to take it up with a moderator.
