Question about naming conventions. - Crow Bookkeep - 08-15-2013 I will be making a Hyur Midlander on Balmung and want to have his first name be Mike. Is this too far out of a name to be used? Will it offend people I RP with by not being a "usual" Final Fantasy name? RE: Question about naming conventions. - Taeh Niumoenwyn - 08-15-2013 Have a read of the naming conventions for Hyur in this article. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Hyur RE: Question about naming conventions. - Crow Bookkeep - 08-15-2013 I have read the naming conventions and looked at a random name generator for Hyur male Midlanders but I am not a big fan of most of the first names. I will choose a different name if the name Mike is too different from lore to be useable but the main reason I made this thread was more-so for personal opinions of other Roleplayers. What would you think if you seen the name Mike in Final Fantasy? Would you accept it, not want me in the group, or tell me to change it to fit lore better? I just want some personal opinions. RE: Question about naming conventions. - Taeh Niumoenwyn - 08-15-2013 I haven't played a Final Fantasy game before, apart from a brief trial of FFIX. The name 'Mike' does sound quite modern to me but that wouldn't stop me from roleplaying with someone using that name assuming that their roleplay was acceptable. So I would say maybe you can have your official character name be Michael and just tell people that to just call you Mike as a nickname. That way you can kill two birds with one stone. Staying true to the lore but having the name that you want as well. RE: Question about naming conventions. - allgivenover - 08-15-2013 Mike is a little modern, but Michael should be fine. http://fandango.exp.jp/name-generator.php Have you checked this random name generator? It's fine if you want to go with Michael, but I just wanted to link you to it in case you hadn't seen it yet. RE: Question about naming conventions. - Syggfryd - 08-15-2013 I agree with Rock on this one. Put down Michael, but then just ask to be called Mike. That even adds a level of immersion to the game, having to tell people every time they use your full name. ![]() That said, there are always exceptions to lore, and Mike is even reasonably close to a run-of-the-Lore-mill name. You wouldn't be offending anyone if you stuck with Mike and had an IC reason. Follow your gut, and don't look back. RE: Question about naming conventions. - Eve Malusion - 08-15-2013 I'm with others on either going with Michael or Mikhail, or something of the sorts. Though I would just leave that as a lore background thing and still put Mike on my character, if you want people to go by it even OOC, and then just explain it IC if it ever comes up. If you're going to be introducing yourself as Mike it seems simpler that way to me. Personally I'm using a stage name that doesn't follow naming convention at all, but I have an IC name following the convention and a background reason to follow it, and I'm obsessed with unified branding; how else can people find me that I knew from other games! My view of things might be influenced by having a grandfather that used his nickname the entire time to the degree that I literally didn't know what his real first name was before he died.[sup]Though they still used his nickname rather than real name in the funeral. [/sup] RE: Question about naming conventions. - Crow Bookkeep - 08-15-2013 Thanks a bunch for the help everyone, I will go with Michael as the first name and simply ask to be called Mike. I'll figure a good IC reason to want to be called Mike, maybe just for simplicity, I haven't decided yet. Thanks again ![]() |
