Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - Moondoggie - 08-20-2013 I'm new to Final Fantasy XIV and have not played the beta so i'll be starting fresh once early access kicks in. After playing around with the character creator benchmark and looking at races i settled on Miqo'te Keepers Of The Moon. I will be creating a female and a more traditionalist tribal type face paint and all from a nomadic group. I'm wondering how others approach RP with these characters i suppose she would be shy and suspicious around people of other races. I've never actually created a character like this yet so i was wondering how to approach it in practice. Like do others pick up on it without it being a pre arranged storyline or do you find it hard to prompt others to approach you without telling them? Also looking at what lore is available with Seekers it doesn't really say what the two groups think of each other just that they don't see much of each other since one group prefers to be active during the day and the other during the night. How do others approach this one? Are your characters generally favorable to all Miqo'te regardless or what culture they come from or do they dislike Seekers? Being nocturnal by lore is it kind of hard to keep that up? I don't know how often the day/night cycle is in game and of course during leveling sessions you aren't going to be too bothered about it but from a RP and lore perspective i'd feel odd just abruptly ending a RP just because it got light and i must hide from the evil sunlight! And the other side of that coin it'd be hard to come up with good reasons why she'd suddenly be very active in the day. And approach to males seems a bit different to Seekers where males sort of butt heads for mating rights. Keepers from what i can gather have less males to go around but i'm thinking even so she wouldn't just automatically mate with the first male who approaches her i imagine she'd be rather passive until they prove how strong they are or what a good hunter they are by bringing her the biggest beast they can find as an offering. And this is one where i wonder would another RP player get what i was doing without me prompting them either in character or OOC saying "This is how you need to impress her" or something. How could i RP this without it seeming like i'm just telling them exactly what to do to win her affections. I'm not really against character relationships if they make sense. I'd want it to be kind if a gradual thing if it did happen but at the same time i don't want people i'm just being a jerk on purpose and they are whispering me like "Why won't your character love mine!?" or something. I'm sure that won't actually happen but i'm just finding my feet with how to approach a character that isn't such an extrovert who lays everything out each for others to understand. RE: Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - Kouen Elfrit - 08-20-2013 This may be slightly irresponsible by I'd just come up with reasons why a character would behave this way if the lore says this and that. I personally wouldn't ask why but I'd have the reasons readily available, that is if your character feels the need to explain themselves. RE: Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - Graive Elune - 08-20-2013 I say just go with the flow. I'm pretty new to the Miqo'te lore in general, and I'll be playing a male Keeper. His family is rather big, and unusual for Keepers as he has seven brothers, but yeah. I guess it's all on your preference. Though, if it's another Keeper, I'm assuming they'd know that hunting, etc is very traditional to impress a female. From what I've read, that is. As far as keeping up with being nocturnal, it doesn't say that they're against the sun, just that they prefer the night. So, I imagine you'll see one in the daytime ( as by my guess, they'd be forced to sometimes ) and they'll just have a hood on or something. I don't imagine bright sunlight would be healthy for their eyes, haha. RE: Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - FreelanceWizard - 08-20-2013 Welcome! Let me try to answer some of your questions. I apologize for the inline quoting and the wall of text... The trick to playing a shy or introverted character, I've found, is to do interesting emotes. Perhaps your character, while getting a drink at the far side of a tavern, can play with some mysterious locket or make off-handed snarky comments under her breath. Maybe there's some characteristic about others that draws her attention -- that can turn into an emote about studying someone intensely from across the room. You can say a lot in emotes without actually speaking at all. However, the path of the shy, suspicious character in open RP is a difficult one. For such a character, joining an LS or FC or setting up scenes (meetings, mind you, not necessarily full-fledged storylines) OOC can help get interactions started. You may also want to consider having some extreme quirk that can draw your character out of her shell. Maybe she's terrified of roegadyn; perhaps she's violently opposed to elezen talking down to other races; she might be obsessed with petty thievery (though you'd want to get consent first before nicking someone's coin purse ). The lore is pretty vague on this, as you noticed. However, we know from a dev post that Eorzeans are a fairly tolerant people on average, and we also know from a different dev post that Seekers and Keepers occasionally interbreed. From the main site, we know Keepers and Seekers generally aren't found in the same locations. That suggests to me that, in general, the two clans have no opinion on the other short of rough stereotypes. For what it's worth, my Seeker is favorable to all miqo'te, regardless of clan (though she has certain issues with tribal and "domesticated kitten" miqo'te ). That said, she's generally positively inclined to everyone... (08-20-2013, 07:14 PM)Moondoggie Wrote: Being nocturnal by lore is it kind of hard to keep that up? Because that's an unreasonably high speed that exists for game mechanics reasons, what most RPers do is either consider the time in game to be the server time, or consider the time in game to be their local time. The latter tends to be more common in LSs and FCs where most of the players are in the same, or similar, time zones. Additionally, as others noted, the Keepers are naturally nocturnal, but as anyone who's had to switch to a different shift can tell you, people are adaptable. If you want to play up your character's unhappiness at being up during the day, you can pepper your RP with yawns, blinks, and heavy eyelids. They're a jerk and a bad RPer, and you wouldn't want to RP with them anyway. What I'd recommend is let a relationship evolve naturally. Think about, then react, as your character would; if someone flirts with her and she finds it obnoxious, have her tell them off. In real life, we don't tell people what it takes to impress us (well, usually ), so why would RP be different? Let the chips fall where they may, as that can lead to some good RP on a number of fronts. That said, if you feel that, narratively, you want to telegraph to someone what would impress your character (or, better yet, your character wants to telegraph that because she finds someone especially attractive, or because she has other motives), she can off-handedly mention what she likes -- dropping hints, basically, just as one might do in RL. Of course, by lore, Keepers are matriarchal, so she might just grab a Keeper male by the ear and say, "If you want to prove your worth, go take down something worth my time to see." Per the discussion above, you could even make this a quirk of your character that can start RP. And I will also use war paint mostly white as the moon for obvious reasons lol RE: Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - Taishan - 08-20-2013 (08-20-2013, 07:14 PM)Moondoggie Wrote: I'm new to Final Fantasy XIV and have not played the beta so i'll be starting fresh once early access kicks in. I too will be playing a Mi'qote Keeper, and it seems she will also have a personality a lot like yours. I'm not too sure how I will play her either, so I was glad to see this post. So far I do have a small backstory for her to explain some of her shyness, and already have half of my hotbar liked with emotes figuring those will help in moments when she is not doing a lot of talking. So much about the character seems deceptively simple, but without much lore to go on, I'm finding it a bit more complex than a character with pages of backstory. RE: Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - Taeh Niumoenwyn - 08-21-2013 You may want to have a look at what other people have written about their Miqo'te Keepers on the Moon characters on the wiki - http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Miqo%27te_Keeper_of_the_Moon - to get some ideas. Teah's is very basic but some are full of detail. Although I would offer the friendly advice not to blatantly copy another character. RE: Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - Naunet - 08-21-2013 Regarding being nocturnal and reacting to that in-game... The day/night cycle in-game is absurdly fast and quite clearly not supposed to be taken ICly. I've had it go through dozens of dawn-day-dusk-night cycles in a single RP session in the betas, so... yeah. Generally we just pick a "time" at the start of a scene and keep with it. xD RE: Miqo'te Keepers RP advice - Moondoggie - 08-21-2013 Thank you for the replies and pointers. I think i'm maybe thinking too much into some areas but as others are perhaps finding too it's somewhat hard to develop a character with not much lore to go on. But i'm learning more from others in this thread that is making it easier. I think the emotive approach will be a good one and i'll work on that. I've only had one experience with RP in an MMO with playing Tera Online so it's still something that is very new to me and since in that game i have characters who are quite confidence or just a bit crazy they tend to express themselves mostly through speech so a new kind of character is fun and exciting and i'm eager to learn from others. I think i was over thinking the whole night time thing like my character is some sort of vampire that will melt if sunlight touches her. Moving into Cities and changing her life as such will mean a change to her routine so it'd probably be impossible to sleep all day and be active all night. Of course she doesn't have to like it and it will add some more expressions for me to play with since this character will be a bit less...Well a lot less loud than my previous characters. Being a quiet shy type who is not normally forward but when she is around her own culture being used to women being in charge she could be quite pushy when it comes to males of her own people being used to women playing the dominant role in her group growing up. |
