YoshiP just posted this over on Lodestone. Salient points include:
  • Concurrent connections of 218,000 which is a new FFXIV record.
  • Explanation about the Server Player Restrictions and Character Creation Restrictions.
  • Load Balancing / Adding New Worlds.
  • Optimizations are almost done and we'll start seeing the effects by next week.
  • additional free playtime (several days) added due to server inconveniences.
Here is a translated Summary from DualShockers

Edit: Alothia changed the title so it won't look like you're shouting. ^^

Part of me feels like this isn't enough compensation... but at least it's something; so I am ignoring the part of me that thinks that. Tongue

You lost out on days, you get days back. Seems like the perfect compensation to me.

Not like there was pain and suffering, or loss of any data.

So I suppose I may need a bit if clarification on this is anyone is willing to bare with me.

Quote:The measures taken by the development team are expected to increase the capacity of both the Japanese and the North American/European datacenters significantly, smoothing out the login and performance issues.

Every time I see that my brain thinks that they will be increasing server capacity. But somehow I think that is only wishful thinking on my part since none of my friends(or boyfriend) can make new characters now. Am I reading too far into that whole, "...increase the capacity of both the Japanese and North American/European datacenters..." bit?

Well.. yes, it should increase the server capacity. I mean, that's kind of the whole point of it. I don't see why they'd bother if it didn't.

Now, whether or not they can increase capacity to the extent that it meets all of the demand being placed upon them is another matter entirely!

RE: TO EVERYONE WHO WANTED TO BE COMPENSATED - Dameon - 08-29-2013

Yeah, it's pretty clear they mean to give us servers that can handle the increased number of players.

Fair enough, just wanted to be sure I understood it correctly. So I am not relaying misinformation to people who don't follow the forums.

What about server transfers and such? I wanted to get on to Balmung or Gilgamesh as early as open beta, but the servers were consistently locked by the time I got there. Now there's not a single NA server even open. Would server transfers work from EU to NA? Would I still have to pay for that? Or am I just doomed to sit back and wait for them to finish before I can play on a NA server with other roleplayers (or even a NA server at all)?

RE: TO EVERYONE WHO WANTED TO BE COMPENSATED - PeriasGift - 08-30-2013

They said that they're planning to have server transfers around mid-September.

RE: To everyone who wanted to be compensated. - Cara Tairisiu - 08-31-2013

Back in 1999, Verant launched EverQuest (before SOE bought out Verant). In the first month they had troubles like this so Verant bravely announced they'd give everyone an extra full 30 days. The mood in the community shifted and EQ instantly became the biggest MMOG on the block and persisted as the largest (aside from Lineage in Korea) for many years after that. Giving up one entire month's worth of sub time to 150,000 players (that was their early numbers) back then was huge. It was also exactly the right PR move to defuse a bad situation.

SE could take a lesson from history.

I wonder if server transfers will require you to pay to correct their mistakes? I sure hope not.

RE: To everyone who wanted to be compensated. - KitKat - 08-31-2013

I think that players have gotten significantly more greedy over the years. I sincerely doubt that 30 days for free would satisfy a good many of these people.

For my part, I'm okay with what I have. I don't need anything. But then, I mostly get to play during my normal playing time (late-late nights).

RE: To everyone who wanted to be compensated. - LilMomoshi - 08-31-2013

Eh, I'm just tired. By which I mean it's 3 am for me, when I work a 9-6 job throughout the week, and I still haven't seen Balmung open up for even a minute. I'd be happy with the 30 days game time, sure. 7 extra days, even. Right now though, I'd really just like to get on the server and start playing (Since I already missed out on my chance to get on Balmung during open beta, early access, and every day of live so far for the exact same reason that has me up at 3 am).

Login Issue Update
I know many of you are still affected by the World login and character creation restrictions, so I would like to give you all a brief update on the progress of the measures we are taking to alleviate this situation.

Current Server Status

To ensure as many players as possible can log in and create characters on existing servers, our development and operations teams are monitoring server load and population around the clock, placing and removing restrictions with even the slightest fluctuation in numbers in order to maintain near-full capacity on each World. We are still experiencing maximum concurrent connection numbers of over 230,000 users. This number, however, has taxed some of our instance servers, and is causing unexpected down time here, as well.

Scheduled Maintenance for Wednesday, September 4 (Japan Time)

The addition of new Worlds, as well as the adjustments to the duty finder servers, will be complete as of tomorrow. We will then enter our final internal testing phase of these features in preparation. If the results from these tests are favorable, we will conduct an extended all-World maintenance on Wednesday (Japan time). Once the new Worlds are implemented and the duty finder server load has been redistributed over smaller World server groups, we believe that many of the login issues that players are currently experiencing will clear.

When Worlds do finally reopen after the maintenance, we expect a rush of players trying to log back in. To prevent any further login issues, we will be using the utmost caution when restarting each World. Please understand that there may be some congestion at this time.

The development and operations teams are currently dedicating their full resources to alleviating the issues at hand and providing all of our players with a stable environment in which to experience the realm of Eorzea.

Free Trial Extension

To apologize to our loyal fans who may not have been able to login or create characters during early access and the days immediately following launch, the development and operations teams are currently considering providing all player accounts with an additional seven days to their free trials. This includes non-legacy players from 1.0, who will be given new seven-day free trials. Trial extensions will be awarded after the aforementioned server maintenance on Wednesday. Details on the trial extension, including the extension period, will be released in a separate post as soon as they have been solidified.

We thank our fans again for the overwhelming support you have shown us over the past week. The response to FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn has well exceeded our expectations, and unfortunately resulted in our inability to provide the service which we originally intended. We humbly ask for your continued patience as we work to alleviate the issues as we truly appreciate all of our fans. We are very sorry for the frustration that has resulted from these problems.
