Police Group - LandStander - 10-06-2013 I really wanted to just gauge the interest of the community on the idea of a police/military themed linkshell/free company that would post bounties and bring criminals in. I know there are a decent amount of people in the game that are playing unsavory characters, but I feel like there is no real consequence for their actions. Is there lore to support anything like different divisions of the GC (or I think it is the GC that have been acting as the police of the individual city/states)? Or would it be easier just to have people acting as vigilantes and bringing criminals to justice? I would think that because of the whole Garlean threat, the primals, and the beastmen, not to mention the refugee's flooding into Ul'dah, that they would appreciate some help with policing the streets and trying to keep things under control. I know that there are always concerns about people ignoring authority type characters so I was wondering how people felt about the idea in general and also, if anyone would like to join such a linkshell/company. RE: Police Group - Ildur - 10-06-2013 I know there was a guild in World of Warcraft that dedicated itself to capturing criminals in Stormwind. They were plagued with characters that got captured and promptly escaped (because nobody wants their characters to be unavailable for long periods of time). It was quite popular, however, or so I hear. I'll leave the other specific details for other, more knowledgable people, but that was the main thing I want to focus on: player charcaters won't stay in prison. Just like comic book villains, you could say. There's also the problem that there's no way to enforce any kind of law mechanically so ,in a way, you would still have no consequence for them unless they choose to accept them. It's a problem of the player more than the character's. The Grand Companies don't act as a police for the different city states: they are the military branch. Each city has a 'police' of sorts: Ul'dah has the Brass Blades, Gridania has the Wood Wailers and Limsa Lominsa has the Yellow Jackets. Those groups dedicate to enforce the law and security inside the city's territory, while the Grand Companies dedicate theirselves to foreign threats (like the Garleans). So you could have characters being part of one of those groups (though I can assure you getting the proper uniform for the Brass Blades requires level 50), or you could have a Free Company to act as some sort of private security agency that is sometimes hired by the city states. Or plain old bounty hunters. Those are always fun. Not sure how well the idea would be received, though, since it's very dependant on the roleplaying community's acceptance. And not every roleplayer knows or visits the RPC regularly to give us their two cents. RE: Police Group - LandStander - 10-06-2013 Ah! That is who it was! I couldn't remember who did it, but now its all coming back to me ^^. Yeah, not staying in jail is something I can relate to. It would stink not being able to RP with your character for a few days. It is an interesting topic as I wouldn't know how to get around to it. Maybe some kind of bail posted...but then that could lead to some people constantly committing crimes and then slapping down an infinite supply of invisible gil to stay out of gil. I don't think characters would be willing to pay real gil (but this could be given back to the community in form of bounties). I don't know, just tossing ideas around :3. I remember someone wanted to play a lawyer character. I read it a few months before launch. I hope you are reading this Roegadyn guy I can't remember the name of! RE: Police Group - Val - 10-06-2013 While Val wouldn't necessarily join, I think it'd be a GREAT idea for this to happen. It kind've fosters a lot of good RP, both for the community and the villains/negligent on the server. That being said, I also recall the Guard in Stormwind and remember them running about and doing a lot. The only problem would be the things that supposedly plagued them, such as favoritism and elitism and all that good stuff. I say supposedly because I honestly wasn't in the guild, nor do I know the truth of the rumors that inevitably surfaced. All in all so long as someone could keep it fair, I think it'd be great. Also, should someone have the need or desire to capture Val, I have no problems with him staying in as long as he needs/has to. I have alts for a reason, after all =) RE: Police Group - Salty Lake - 10-06-2013 I think this is a great idea! I would never RP a cop, but I think you should go for it. I don't think police and military should be combined, though. I believe that there are already military FCs. It's a problem of the player more than the character's. This is the only problem I see. From past experience, I venture at least half the people who play lawless characters do it because they enjoy keeping their characters forever above the law and never having any consequences for their crimes. Regardless, it's a good idea and certainly worth a try. It could create a lot plotlines and drama for RP, as well as add some realism to the world. I hope it works out!  (Perhaps Faye may even offer some assistance). |
