A Coeurl Question - Sahde Vhidgo - 10-24-2013

Heya RPC Smile

While FFXIV does a thorough job of explaining how one might acquire a chocobo (and also gives the player tangible ways to train it and travel with it), other mounts are different. While there are a few to choose from, between the Conjurer mount and the account reward mounts, I'm specifically curious about the coeurl.

Is anyone roleplaying their character as actually having a rideable coeurl? If so, how did he or she come by it? How do you justify it within the lore of the game? Who trained it?

I'm not a cynic; just a curious player. I'd love to hear how anyone else is going about this, as the concept has crossed my mind for one of my own characters.

RE: A Coeurl Question - E'irawen - 10-25-2013

Disclaimer: My information mostly comes from observation and just general pondering, not first hand experience!

When I watch my shells RP with each other regarding the mounts, it's become kind of varied. The consensus that I've generally seen is that it is possible to have a unicorn or ceourl, but that they're uncommon. (A few people often RPed as if non-RPers were included in RP, and would therefore assume there were suddenly thousands of each mount out of nowhere).

As far as how I haven't quite seen just one set way. I had sort of assumed that Conjurer/White Mages would get their unicorns via the Fane or some such, since it seems to literally be job specific.

Ceourls, though, I imagined it might be something like trying to have a pet tiger in the real world. You'd likely have to have been raising one since childhood and domesticate it, but even so, natural instinct might come back to bite you in the butt.

That being said! I don't think anyone's got any set rules yet on how the new mounts are being obtained. I think using your imagination is key on it, but not to be illogical about it. (IE: You randomly had a Pocahontas moment and BAM insta-ceourl pet. That would seem a little silly, I think.)

RE: A Coeurl Question - Olofantur - 10-25-2013

I RP my Legacy Chocobo as an IC mount separate from my regular chocobo, he was the one with me from "before Dalamund" though I don't disclose that, I instead explain that he is a loyal steed that I trust only when I feel I need the utmost cunning and guile to see me though a moment. I try to let him rest when I can as hes earned it and instead use my "new" chocobo, who I do care for greatly, for the more "mundane" tasks, and who is more often out afield with me.

I've also seen a few IC Gobbues (though I haven't made that jump myself) which have pretty good explanations as the quest for them was reasonable at the time. Mostly Grindanians, which kind of makes sense...

RE: A Coeurl Question - K'dath - 10-25-2013

I'm... not sure about the coeurl, but it's definitely justifiable in my opinion. It's like the people who train big cats in real life. When raised from youth to regard you, and handled with proper care by someone tempered with years of experience, they make obedient companions. (And I am NOT advocating anyone that is not a trained animal specialist ever lust after the idea of having one as a PET.)  Coeurls are even implied to have some level of sentience/magic power, making it seem more likely they were able to form close bonds of trust with a humanoid.

I'd personally be offended by anyone who said "I found it as a baby and then I just slapped a saddle on it" because, I actually have first hand knowledge of big cat training and it's nothing at all like that. But the idea doesn't offend me at all from a role playing perspective. In fact, I think it would be neat if someone opted to be a Coeurl tamer! There's some interesting hooks in that concept...

I know other mounts have perfectly fine justification though. The legacy ones had quests, the chocobo is covered in game or is available by many other diverse means if you're not a main-story adherent. I haven't done the unicorn myself, but I'm sure there's a perfectly fine logic to it as well.

I'd be interested in seeing what some people with the Ahriman mount! We know they can be summoned from the void by some of the bad guys, and the flavor item which grants them says as much: A metal tuning fork that, when struck, emits a low tone which opens a temporary rift in the void.
Spooky!

RE: A Coeurl Question - suncitycat - 10-25-2013

If it helps, the info text that appears when I hover over my coeurl button says, "Summon your fleet-footed battle coeurl, trained from a pup to recognize you as a friend... not food."

Obviously, not every rper is going to use that description as a means of how they acquired their coeurl, but that's at least one method. Like K'dath briefly mentioned though, one should do a bit of research into big cat training before deciding to rp their coeurl.

If it can be justified through reasoning that is both solid and feasible, go ahead! If people are just going to go ahead and have their character gain access to every little thing that they come across 'becuz itz kewl lol xDDDDDD' then problems tend to arise.

As a rule of thumb these sort of things should have a decent reason behind them, since it can be a tad awkward when something fairly rare is brought up as a point of interest IC only for the excuse behind it to be on the flimsy side.

Pretty much this.

Hey now, "coolness" is a perfectly valid reason for having something! I know I own plenty of things for no other reason other than "Holy crap this shit is awesome", and I am certain I'm not alone. There doesn't have to be some convoluted motivation to having everything.

RE: A Coeurl Question - Nebbs - 10-25-2013

Here how I use mine

Chocobo mount - generally a rented thing, that gets put in a stable

Chocobo Pet - my friend that I rescued from killer crabs in Costa del Sol

Coeurl - my main mount that I captured and trained. It gets set loose to hunt when I arrive and comes to a whistle

Magitek - I have no IC reason for this and so never comes out

Voidal - not sure will proably use for All Saits as a spirit or something along with the pet

I don't have any others but as my Char is dabbling as Conjurer I may come up with
something for a Unicorn, cos they is kewl.

I also walk run a fair bit, being a Bard that eats up the miles quite nicely.

RE: A Coeurl Question - Sahde Vhidgo - 10-25-2013

Thanks or the excellent responses, folks Smile Most of the MMOs I have played previously have had vast arrays of riding-mount options, and I've always found it interesting to discuss the lore justification surrounding them.

(Also, it's my super-secret hope that I can someday add barding to a coeurl mount. Shh! Super secret!)

"Because it's cool" is certainly a fine justification, as everyone's roleplay is their own, but I've always liked to explore motivations for such things a little deeper on my own characters, and what's been said here is very helpful Smile For coeurl in particular (and any other mount that would be extremely dangerous, untrained), I've assumed that there is either a small faction that captures and trains them, or said mount would have spent most of its life with its rider.

Anyroad, openness in how one can approach such a thing in-game is always welcome.

My point was that everyone (or, okay, a lot of people) in real life owns something, or even multiple somethings, that they obtained for literally no other reason other than it was awesome. Why do I have a baneling/zergling reversible plushy sitting on top of my computer tower? Because it's freaking awesome, that's why.

Therefor, it makes perfect sense for a character in RP to have something for no reason other than they think it's cool. Is it shallow for the character? Sure. Is it shallow in terms of RP? Certainly not; it's realistic. A person is not going to have some deep and meaningful motivation behind everything they own.

I blame my own lack of specificity for this one; I was still on the topic of something relatively difficult to obtain ICly, such as a coeurl mount. Certainly, "having something because it's cool" does not indicate shallow roleplay. It wasn't my intention to make a blanket statement about everything a character owns. Instead, I meant to indicate that the motivation behind a character having something rare is something I enjoy exploring.

Aah, I gotcha! ^^ Carry on~

RE: A Coeurl Question - Sophia_Grave - 10-25-2013

Here's the item description for the Coeurl bell:

"A tiny brass bell used to summon your personal coeurl mount, trained on the Pearl by the last of the legendary coeurltamers."

So it looks like taming coeurls is a valid thing. We sure don't see them ingame, but they're in the lore.

However, what is this Pearl thing/place, though?

RE: A Coeurl Question - shotgunbadger - 10-25-2013

Yea the bell implies that Coeurl training used to be a thing (no clue if it was as common as Chocobo training, or if it was a luxury thing) but now in the modern day has fallen away.

Honestly my characters ride them because they're fuckin cool as hell, no real grand explanation to that, just they got their hands on a bell by some method and thought 'yea cruising around on a big ass cat is cool as hell'.
