Where is the RP on Balmung?! - Brent Stone - 05-10-2014
Hi, guys! So, I'm just getting back into the game after a fairly long hiatus, and I've noticed... I'm not seeing any RP lately, at least not in cities! This site still seems quite active, though, so I'm going to guess the RP hasn't vanished. In the two weeks I've been back, I've seen RP twice and weaseling my way into them wasn't very successful.
Is it all in the housing districts now, or did I miss a memo? Are there new hubs? Someone fill me in, please!

Hello there!
I would simply say that you got a little unlucky with the hours, then. I've been connected for most of the evening and night, and I've noticed a healthy amount of RP going on, may it be at the Quicksand or in the streets of Ul'dah.
Try some more, you'll be quick to find action for you to jump in hopefully!

Repeating what Haeden said: 'you got a little unlucky with the hours'. I'll sometimes see a lot of RP while other times I wont see a thing. Why not try wandering around places at different times? Then you'll be able to see what places are busy when. :3

Your best bet is always in a bar somewhere around each city-state. If you see people walking, you will likely come across RPers. Quicksand is the most bustling, I've noticed, so take Haeden's advice!

Aha! There we go. I'd only checked the Quicksand a handful of times, but went just now and it's quite bustling despite the hour. I was mostly checking Carline Canopy and Drowned Wench, but now I remember most of the RP being in Ul'dah. *facepalms*
Either way, thanks! Glad to see RP is still alive and well. I was worried! Now, time to poke around.

Where has it gone..
- Some have left
- Some have returned but what was there is no more
- Houses.. many houses and more coming
- The grind ... the game is grind based, which is a time sink. So people will go grind rather than "hanging around"
- RP in hotspots (towns, inns)
- Events - check out this forum for events
- Link Shells - find some RP ones, though I have all but given up on these
- Free Company - probably the best option, band together with like minded folks
- Always be ready to do some casual RP as you go about things, I try to be at least semi-IC and you do get fly-by RP chances.

I was new myself to the game a few months back and remember how seemingly tough finding rp can feel. Â But I promise there is still a ton of rp going on in Balmung, Â especially Ul'dah. Â If you're interested, Â I've been running an rp event called Saga of the Wind Swept Sands. Â It's almost over but if you wanted to come to the last one , it would give you a chance to meet some awesome rpers, Â like Osric or Haeden here, Â who managed to trick me onto vent last night, made me lose track of time cause I was laughing to much, Â and leaving me to work a 12 hour shift with only 5 hours of sleep. Â Lol.Â
If you want, Â I'm always up for rp if you send me a tell in game. Â

I always use this thread to keep updated the hotspots for my characters. I find it quite useful, though I don't know if the other members are keeping it updated.Â

Thanks for the helpful responses, everyone! I've found a lot of RP going on and a bit to weasel my way into. However, at the risk of generalizing, it seems most of the people loitering around looking for RP are looking for that flirty type of RP, but then that seems to be a big thing in most RP hot spots, so I don't know what I was expecting.

Definitely keep trying. There is a lot of that anywhere you go, just have to weed through it and find the others.

Public events may be better chances to meet people of all types not necessarily interested in finding an intimate relationship, so keep an eye on the calendar.

Another thing you could do aside checking the thread I mentioned and follow the advice others gave, is to browse the wiki for characters you may find interesting to meet ICly, and then PM them or send them tells to set up an IC encounter. A lot of players will leave the "find me/contact me!" request when you post a LFRP thread on the forum, or on a more general level, RPers will prefer to be "clicked" (a term coming from NPCs, since you've got to find them and 'click' them to start a conversation) to start RP, rather than camping spots and waiting (Although admittedly I still do that, but it's because I quickly run out of OOC stuff to do in-game. I just tend to choose unpopular areas to camp).
If what you're looking for instead is RPers for long-term relationships (and no, I'm not talking about romance), joining FCs or event-specific LSs may be the way for you. Those people are always more prone to RP together in all kinds of places, more than RPers you have no connections with.

Since I decided to have Aya take a job at the Quick Sand I've seen plenty of tavern RP! There is plenty of flirting and romancing going, of course, but there's also a great deal of general conversation, and casual RP. I have fun just chatting with people, and learning about the characters, and (sometimes) getting a little feel for some of the RP story lines going on because of the way the characters discuss them. I certainly wouldn't encourage people to stay away because of the flirting - sometimes there is a bit of excess in public RP, but its pretty rare.
I'd also just mention that its a great way to meet people, since you can just swing by and sit at a table with someone or next to them at the bar and try to strike up a conversation. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it can be fun
Ultimately, though, it seems best as a place to mingle and meet people, rather than as a destination for serious RP itself. But for that purpose its terrific.
