Serendipity [Semi-Closed] - TheLastCandle - 09-18-2014

Menphina's light bathed the ruined edifice in a silver glow, lending it an especially eerie air to the Miqo'te's eyes. A solitary remnant of a bygone age and a sullen reminder of the futility of civilization, mused Kendha'to Burwani, unusually thoughtful. Where once there had been any number of Nymeian caretakers - if the rumors were true - overseeing a place of great learning were now only a tangled web of vines, working their way into cracks and crevices and threatening to reclaim the very stones used to build it.

Kendha'to cast a dubious glance over his shoulder, to the silhouette of his companion. "Are you sure this is the place?"

There was a hint of impatience in his tone; the journey there had been long, and the trip had cost them nearly all of the gil they carried between the two of them. Far out of the way of any trading vessel's route, it had taken some convincing before they were able to find a ship willing to take them to the small, deserted island. And unfortunately, the only language in which Lominsan merchants were willing to negotiate was that of gold. Pirates in all but name, he thought bitterly.

"Yes - unf! I'm sure," came the female's reply. Nearly stumbling over her own feet, Panha picked her way more carefully across the narrow bridge, slippery with mist from the rush of the nearby waterfall.

At last, she came to stand at the male's side and fumbled with the clasp of her belt satchel. Drawing out the stone tablet, she studied the description for the umpteenth time, her magenta gaze flickering from the words to the structure just ahead. "Um, not a doubt in my mind," she confirmed, giving him a sidelong glance before adding meekly, "This time for certain."

Without waiting for any sarcastic reply the male might be carrying on his lips, Panha gingerly placed the tablet back into the container and made her way up the dirt path to the ruin.

Kendha'to shook his head with a soft tch and fell into step behind her. His eyes darted to and fro as they walked. "I guess that merchant had th' right of it," he muttered quietly. "Not a single soul here besides the two of us."

The male had been inspecting their surroundings for some sign of civilization since they'd arrived, but had found not a single trace of man or beast tribe. The knowledge only served to add to the odd trepidation he already felt, but he took some small amount of comfort in Panha's newfound confidence.

Large double doors, standing ajar, led into the building. Once ornate carvings must have adorned the grand oak, but weather and the ages had left their mark, warping them beyond recognition. Panha cleared away a tangle of spiderwebs with a gloved hand before stepping into the gloom within.

"It's a little sad," she reflected, lowering to a murmur when her voice echoed through the small chamber. Her Keeper eyes adjusted easily to the darkness, and she beheld the fallen majesty of one of Nym's great academies as she made her way down the aisle that separated the rows of seats. Bookshelves lined the walls; to her disappointment they were left bare, either secreted away by the scholars as they fled whatever catastrophe befell this place or taken by looters. Fragments of stone littered the floor, fallen from the walls and vaulted ceiling. There were windows, most of them miraculously intact, but so layered with dust that little light filtered through them. The largest of these centered behind a grand podium that stood upon a dais at the far end of the auditorium. "Imagine what could have been, had Nym's influence spread even farther beyond Vylbrand."

Soon, Panha climbed the short steps that led to the dais and circled round to stand behind the podium. Wiping away a thick layer of dust, she swept her gaze over the seats. In another time, it might have been her addressing the grand assembly, lecturing disciples in the theorems of Arcanima. She dismissed the thought at once from her mind - she was no great scholar of auld; she was barely a journeyman arcanist, only a few moons fresh from her studies at Mealvaan's Gate!

Her head lowered, silver-white bangs falling free to hide the sardonic smile from the male's eyes, and then started when a glint of silver caught her eye on the floor below. Lowering herself to a crouch, she cleared away the thick dust to reveal more of the pattern that was etched into the very rock. "Ahh," she breathed, marvelling. "Ken, I think I've found something!"
