I should get arrested - OttoVann - 10-07-2014

Catchy title I know. So I'm thinking to flex a bit more of my backstory I should be arrested. People have constantly said to me off-handed "Well if Otto gets arrested he can just bribe/bail his way out with his money and connections. Thats Syndicate affiliation life". Well I want that to happen.

Thing is...how? I wouldnt be an arrogant rude prick "How dare you put YOUR hands on ME" sort of thing. I think I would comply totally with an enormous grin and aura of confidence in getting off the hook sort of thing. Thats all fine and good...but who wants to go through with this? Is this idea plainly stupid or a waste of time? Beats me.

Also Im thinking if this we're to ever happen Id like to 'experience' the whole affaird. Not just being cuffed and walking out of the Quicksand. Going all the way to the hall of flames, being 'processed', etc. Paying my fine to avoid jail-time at the end not the beginning sort of thing. Also I want the gil to be real as far as an actual fine levied.

Any help or advice?

Gosh people are replying with me doing like...real nefarious shit. Thats not bad but I was thinking very light hearted with it. Like Im playing with my new sharp sword that I wear around in my paid for Paladin Artifact armor in the quicksand. This playing around with it leads...Natalie to say "Cut the shit out" and I tell her to fuck off, 'make me' sort of thing and I get cuffed for it. I dont think I want to rape anything

I can make this happen. However if I told you why ahead of time then that wouldn't be any fun.

Alrighty! You need to find out what you want to have him arrested for, and figure out how to set up the 'crime' in a manner that allows him to be caught/implicated. Afterward, you need to decide what's going to happen. Is he going to get off with a sackful of gil? Is there going to be a trial? Is he just going to spend some time in gaol? Once you figure out each of those little points, you can start expanding on them in order to start playing it off in episodic fashion Tongue.

For it to make -real- impact, in my opinion, Otto would need to do something really... dirty. It has to have real weight to it and it has to be something -he- actually would and did do. You want to show that Otto has those connections. So he's got to do something that society generally considers an act that would lead to making someone an outcast.

Murder. Attempted murder. Rape. Robbery.

Honestly? Sometimes I think that Ul'dah in general doesn't or may not operate by what we consider the real world laws. Something like fraud? Loan shark violence etc. Momodi in the beginning seems just fine letting the guy who has crossed the wrong wealthy guy deal with him and his cronies. "See that dude? Guess he owes a bunch of money. It's obvious he's not going to get off with a smile. Don't end up like him."

Figured this is as good a place as any to point out Otto having paladin armor makes me so ICly uncomfortable it borders on wanting to just ignore the point. It's a mockery of the Sworn and the entire paladin order if he could just buy a set of prestigious armor that means a lot to those who wear it. Not saying you can't do it, obviously, but...

Yeah. Not a fan. It'd be like buying a full set of decorated army stripes and wearing them to a military dinner.

But then really what's the point? Any reasonable amount of people can bribe their way out of that.

"This is some stupid shit to haul you in for, give me 1k and I'll look the other way." Bam. Anyone can do that.

Edit: I don't know if you realize it, and perhaps this is why you are so reluctant to the idea, but Otto the character is not you Otto the player.

Edit2: Like I said, it's my opinion and you don't have to follow it. But you want to show what Otto, the Syndicate-affiliated rich as all get out, highlander can do, right? Something "dark" like those give him serious street cred. It's like... you got a dirty cop right? You want this guy -known- as the dirty cop? He is not just the guy helping known gangbangers and drug traffickers loose. When his alcoholic dirtbag of a son causes a major accident leading to a flipped car and a paralyzed for life kid because his son ran the red light and had open booze in the car? That guy is gone, away from police custody and no booze in sight.

He already said he wants something light and fun. What's you point of insisting he needs to do something dark and dirty if he's already stated he's not interested in that? If it seems asinine or unrealistic to anyone, they needn't be the one to RP it with him.

I'm allowed to respond to an edit that was made entirely in response to my own post that was given as advice. He doesn't have to take it or like it as it is purely my opinion as I already said clearly in my post, and he is perfectly fine bribing as he sees fit for his character.


I'm curious as to how it would give Otto's Syndicate affiliation weight when it's stuff that any merchant with gil can do.

Edit: To make it clear, it's just my opinion what he should do but he does not need to do it. I may question it but that's out of curiosity because, again, to me it's something anyone with gil can do. If Kage heard about it he'd shrug and go "So what? I see merchants on pearl lane do it all the time for petty crimes. I bribed my way into owning a house they said is for adventurer's only."

That's also a perfectly reasonable thing to do. But it's just my opinion on really using that weight of being a Syndicate-affiliated character.

I don't know your character well enough to know if any of these would work for you.

More on the mistaken identity route:

If its within your means to do so, maybe a vindictive ex fling slipped a fantasia potion into his drink and the transformation resembles a wanted criminal. Otto has to jump through a lot of hoops to prove his identity and his connections.

Oh because I was just thinking how else do I get out of jail (free). I guess Syndicate afiliation doesnt matter if your just rich enough. But to expand a bit more in this light hearted scenario I would be getting arrested by someone with more umph than some Brass Blade. A sworn or paladin of some kind. Someone a bit more stalwart and less inclined to just take money on the spot - someone that WILL ignore that I am Syndicate and take me to processing anyways for my mugshot etc. Granted after Im dropped off I can wriggle out of it but that was the idea.

If the idea is shit I wont pursue it much. Ill message Natalie and see what her idea is though.

^_^ Not a bad idea! Generally, it may be different just because, in general, the Sultansworn do not arrest people and when they do it's along the same lines as Paladins with a citizen's arrest.

Then again~ There's practically no one RPing as Brass Blades so why the hell not? There's ways to get around that small detail in setting up what crime Otto commits.

I know Otto's mentioned that he wants something light and fun, but I'd like to suggest that you put some thought into making getting arrested a consequence of something you do in RP, rather than simply a scenario that you act out.

I've done both sorts of RP. I've done scenarios where it's all "Okay, now I'll get arrested and frog-marched to the gaols, where...", and scenarios where Sultansworn RPers (hi, Nat!) have spent a long time investigating actual RP crimes C'kayah has been involved in. I've got to say, the latter is by far much more fun than the former.

There are a couple of things you have to do to make this happen:
  • You have to trust the cop RPers involved. Since this becomes a real game of cops-and-robbers, you both have to trust that IC information only will be used, and that it's properly scoped. By scoped, I mean both characters can only use information that's ICly available to them.
  • You have to engage in actual crime RP.
  • It has to be in public.
  • You have to accept the fact that things you do while you're RPing as a matter of course can and will be used against you.
  • And lastly, you have to be vulnerable at all times that you're IC. By vulnerable I mean you can say "Sorry, I'm OOC - in queue for Coil" when the cop character comes up to you, but you can't say "Sorry, I'm RPing but it's closed".

Think about giving this a try. It's crime RP from a bottoms-up perspective, as opposed to a top-down ("I have a plot, here's what's going to happen") one. You lose the coherent, integrated plot that you might have in a top-down RP, but you gain both an organicness to your RP as well as a fascinating intellectual exercise.
