Ok let's see...
First, my name irl is Kate, and my character is Kathe Freihertz on the Balmung server. I'm new to the server but not new to the game. I have a character on sargatanas, but I chose not to move her and instead go for a fresh start. I was getting bored with nothing to do on that server and I have always wanted to try my hand at RP in-game. I have roleplayed on forums before, and I would consider myself intermediate as far as writing.
Prior MMORPGs would only be Perfect World International for about 6 years. I briefly tried a couple of others but never stuck with them. My computer also isn't the best, so it is hard to play anything with half-decent graphics. A friend convinced me to play in the 2.0 beta for FFXIV and I fell in love with it. So now I'm here, on a PS4. I have a keyboard though so there is no issue communicating.
So I heard about the RP on Balmung and this website just from suggestions on the official FFXIV forums. I always wanted to give RP a shot but never jumped in. RP on Sarg is non-existent as well. I finally decided now that I have the character on sarg essentially done, I could try my hand at this.
There is a lot to read, and I took a peek at the "Now that I'm here what do I do?" section, but I still feel a bit lost. I'd also like a bit of advice on character creation and background, and if someone can point me in the right direction that would be great. I don't want to do an overly cliche character, but I feel it is bound to happen being the newb that I am to in-game RP.
I have a partner to RP with, who is going to play the big brother figure who eventually becomes a love interest. The basic background story was going to be my character and his are neighbors in Ala Mhigo before the Garleans take over, and when they do, the two of us flee (as children at ages of 7 and 13) and live with the refugees in little ala mhigo, before eventually moving our way to limsa and living there. Calamity happens, they are not warriors of light or anything so they just live out those 5 years in limsa. His character is a blacksmith, my character just does odd jobs around the city. She overhears adventurers talking, it sounds exciting, and she wants to be one. She convinces her partner to become an adventurer with her (ages now 28 and 34 for some idea of timeline). He takes up marauder, she takes up arcanist.
That is just a really basic rundown, but for me I feel like this might be a very common story for a lot of players who choose highlander as a character. I also just don't want to get too ridiculously complicated with a background either. Advice would be greatly appreciated from some veteran RPers. Still fleshing out a good personality for her as well.
As for real life, I'm currently in the process of obtaining a BSN, and working at the Emory hospital (yes the ebola patient hospital) on Fridays. I think that's about it. Hopefully this isn't too long of a read.

Don't worry, I'm not responsible for that floor. I didn't even get to see the patients. I kind of wish I had though. Also, in that garbage bag you are going to die from suffocation well before you catch ebola.

Anyway, thank you! I don't have lore questions as of right now, but I do have questions about LS and FC. I'd just like to know if there are any popular and active FCs on Balmung specifically for RP, and who do I contact for entry/more information? If RP is done more through linkshells, what are the best ones for that?

I'd check out the Linkshell Hall and the Making Connections forums here on the RPC. Linkshells are a pretty good place to start when looking for RP or fellow roleplayers. There are quite a few RP FCs hanging about as well. I believe those can also be found in the Linkshell Hall or if you make it known you're looking for a good RP FC, I'm sure officers will start flocking to you. haha

...Also, if you happen to need a Garlean for any backstory plots, I might be able to help out on that end. While Franz (not his name at the time) is friendly now, he was Garlean military back in the day. Active roughly...25 to 15 years ago the present time. (So a little before the fall of Ala Mhigo to a little after Silvertear, for lore-abiding people).

Ok thanks, I'll be sure to check that out! I was hoping to see some people just roleplaying in general chat, but I haven't seen any so far. Maybe because I'm in limsa? Either way, I'm excited to get my feet wet.
I hope to see you guys in game, and I think some garlean interaction would be great. I do want to get my character background completely settled though before I do any major story interactions. Right now I'm just trying to get her a bit up in level while I have the free time. Can't have her stuck in Limsa lol.

You'll find a lot of open-world RP on Balmung as well. I find it centered around the tavern/pub area the most. For Limsa, that'd be the Drowning Wench and the Bismark. In Ul'dah, typically the Quicksand and sometime the Coffer and Coffin.

I'm still working on a solid profile as well for my character, so any RP I do before I finish that will be kind of light.
