  4. Just a "teahouse with a dark side," so it seems I've nothing to offer, unfortunately! Lydia's FC are good folks, though! Good luck, and I hope you are all able to find somewhere to call home!

Alright, I'll stop yelling in Ul'dah!

Unsure what their recruitment and such is like, but Fool's Covenant is pretty large. I dunno what other sizable RP FC's there are at the moment; most prefer to keep things smaller for easy management and the ability to focus more on individual stories.

    Lore Bending vs. Lore Breaking

As everyone has said, it's subjective. For me, lore-bending is stuff we have not necessarily seen before in canon, but isn't impossible going off the limitations and examples we have been given even if it may be far-fetched. Lore-breaking is something that goes directly against established lore or has nothing at all in the lore hinting toward its possibility. Neither is inherently bad nor good, just depends on your preferences and is often a case-by-case basis of what exactly the person is trying to do with their character. In the example you gave, though, I don't think the lore support is what matters. Someone shouldn't be stealing the spotlight all the time, whether it's with lore-supported abilities or not. Rather than telling the person they're breaking lore (something usually more touchy and that might involve them rewriting parts of their character should they choose to fix it, which could lend to some reluctance), I'd recommend asking them to step back and allow others' characters the chance to shine. That, or avoid RPing with them, or address it with your FC leader/DM/etc. if you two are sharing some sort of group like that.

    New to RP, hi everyone!

Welcome to the role-play community! You can RP at any level, but I recommend trying to get to at least level 15 ASAP so you can travel freely around ARR's major cities!

Balmung RP, is it dying? Has it changed?

Sorry to point out what others already have but I can't not find funny the irony of someone posting on the RPC forums that they don't know where to find people to RP with lol. Here, obviously. Put up looking for connections ads or respond to others' ads. Check out the RPC for free companies, linkshells, and Discords. Start a tumblr and do the same things there. Even the official forums and FFXIV Facebook groups sometimes have ads for RP FC's, RPers, and RP events. Go to events and RP hubs and meet people. Most people I know who are vehemently against "slice of life" RP only sabotage themselves. I'm not saying you are like that, by any means, but I just want to stress its importance since a little is usually necessary. It's hard to just jump into a middle of a fight scene or storyline with no set up or introductions, just as it's difficult to keep things rolling forever with no downtime. But regardless, just because a lot of RP that happens is closed or in private areas/channels does not at all mean it's "slice of life." Most people keep their fights, story events, and big plotlines out of very public places for, well, obvious reasons.

Balmung RP, is it dying? Has it changed?

Runestone did shut down afaik, a new magic tournament was created as its unofficial successor, but I don't know the name of it.

  15. I've always thought of "void-tainted" and "void-touched" to essentially be any non-Voidsent being with Voidsent like qualities, or some relation to the Void. The Void, and by proxy Voidsent, are seen to have a corrupting influence on those who come into extended contact with them. Therefore, the idea isn't so much made up or purely fanon, but vague since we haven't been given a clear canon definition of these things. That being said--and since XIV hasn't portrayed these beings in any one specific way--it's open to interpretation and there's no real "consensus" in the community (heck, a good portion of the community snub their nose OOC at the idea of anyone playing anything Void related). Along with the examples in the post above, the RDM storyline also has some examples of how the Void can influence beings from Eorzea.

Balmung RP, is it dying? Has it changed?

This question has popped up every now and then since... well, launch, basically. So, no, it is far from dying. The server is still, after all, considered a congested world--and one that is largely populated by role-players. There are multiple RP events on any given day. Every day, I see new recruitment ads for FC's and LS's. Everyday, I see a Discord of some sort being advertised, or someone on the server looking for an RP FC or RP connections. I've never seen the Quicksand void of RP for more than an hour or two at off hours. Going by the metric of people presently RPing in the Quicksand or attending big, regular, old events like the Grindstone is far from an accurate measurement. You have to consider that Balmung has been locked for a while and was only very briefly unlocked before being locked again. Most people on the server have been here for a while and had plenty of time to establish connections. And most people, typically, aim to spend their allotted time for RP with people they know and trust, enjoy being around, and can build a progressing and long-lasting character narrative with rather than RPing with a rando in the Quicksand they will probably never see online again. It's natural people want to find friends and social circles and then spend time with them, try as people might to demonize the notion with "cliques" and "circle jerks." And a lot of these RP's people are doing with their friends will, naturally, be more secluded by nature--private conversations, hanging out at someone's house, going on adventures not suited for a dozen strangers tagging along, progressing a character's personal storyline, FC events, couples going on dates, etc. RP hubs are typically frequented the most by people trying to make connections. If you've already got your connections, there's little reason for most people to utilize them, unless they find themselves bored one evening with no friends around, or just desire a change of pace. And with how long the Balmung community has been established and most of us have been here, a lot of people already have all the connections and RP partners they can handle. As for events like the Grindstone, it's been running weekly since shortly after 2.0's launch with little to no breaks. It's basically the same every week, and most people have already been to the Grindstone--repeatedly. I'm not meaning that as a drag against the Grindstone by any means, just to say that the Balmung RP calendar is overflowing with events lately, and Saturday nights are primetime for them (that's not even mentioning all the non-public events, like the many FC's and Discords I know that hold meetings on Saturday evenings). People are more likely to be drawn to one-time events or more unique ones than they are a weekly recurring one that's been running for years which they've already been to a dozen times and can go to a dozen more. Things do, admittedly, feel especially boring right now--but it is worth remembering that we are in a patch lull. In fact, perhaps the worst patch lull I've seen. The Eureka patch was a total flop for the people who ended up disliking Eureka or had little interest in its rewards, and for the people who do like or tolerate Eureka, they've been given a long, instanced grind to complete which will probably eat into their RP time. Right now, a lot of people are feeling uninspired (and even letting their subs lapse) and are only logging in when they have something scheduled beforehand like an event that caught their eye or a private RP planned with a friend. These people aren't just loitering around looking for walk-ups in their downtime, instead they're spending it on other games and pursuits until FFXIV catches their attention again. It's a temporary problem and one remedied, for the most part, when a new patch is released. tl;dr there is still plenty of RP happening, just in different places. I'd say "less accessible" places, but that's not quite right. All it takes to access them is making friends, signing up for events and storylines, posting or answering LFRP ads, and joining some FC's/LS's/Discords.

    Xaela RP & Racism

Unfortunately, I think it does somewhat come with the territory of playing Xaela, especially Dotharl. Not to get too redundant with what's already been said here, but Dotharl are known as violent warmongers who have feuds with other tribes and also look down on all other tribes, races, and non-Dotharl people in general. And that's just the in game lore. Since the addition of Au Ra into the game, many role-players have been playing their Au Ra, and Dotharl in particular, as "savages," "ignorant," consumed with tribal feuds, and a whole slew of things that I think are potentially, uh, tied in to a different kind of "Au Ra racism." Therefore, people have plenty of reason to give their characters a stigma against the Dotharl... and also plenty of reasons to have their own OOC stigmas against the "tropes" they feel Dotharl RPers often employ. Having a single interaction with two Dotharl who appear to be "different" isn't exactly going to change the hearts and minds of most characters. But that doesn't mean you have to endure it. I'd keep it on the lowdown IC that your character is a Dotharl, because that is a pretty fair point of IC conflict in public RP if other characters find out. If people still somehow magically seem to know your character's tribe IC? Call them out politely correct them OOC that your character has not alluded to being a Dotharl, and if they argue (or if you want to skip that step and cut right to the chase), ignore them. Remove your character from the situation, or just do not respond to their emotes in any way. As Tiergan mentioned on the second page, IC problems should be dealt with IC and OOC problems should be dealt with OOC. Someone's character being rude to yours is typically an IC problem. However, if you are feeling unfairly targeted, unable to enjoy your RP, and think it may be rooted in someone's OOC dislike of certain character concepts? That is an OOC issue for certain, and you should respond to it OOC, either by voicing your concerns to the other party, or just refusing to RP with them.
