Hello!

I am rather new here and new to FFXIV.

I'm rather excited to join but I'm really concern about rping. Â I love rp, but I don't know the lore or the game world/history very well. Â I've rped on WoW, Guild Wars, and AION for years, and so this is a big jump for me to go to a game I know absolutely nothing about.

My husband will be joining me, and he's in the same boat. Â We plan to play Au Ra's (Raen). Â They both interested us and look really neat to draw. Â I don't know what class and job strikes me, but he wants to be a Dark Knight eventually. Â

I hope that we can meet fun new people and enjoy rp again. Â Does this game have a language barrier between the different factions/races like WoW and Aion has? Â Or can we interact freely with everyone?

Welcome to Eorzea and the RPC! Unlike other MMOs where lore is readily available to all, FF's lore is scattered, often-times unreliably, across many npcs over the course of the story quests, in side quests, item text, etc. So it makes it all very difficult to chronicle. So here's some basic world-building stuff I've thrown together to help new folks out. Hope it helps! ^^ Lemme know if you have any more specific questions!

It does not! Anyone is free to interact with everyone on their chosen server! ^^ Each race does have its own language in the lore though, but now that the city-states of Eorzea have been united and opened trade among each other in the last hundred years, the "Common" language is now spoken by most everyone, including most of the beast tribes.

Well lore wise the game introduces you to it. But I find there are some on-line places you can check things out at (such as the wikia etc..)

I'd recommend keeping the character concept simple and not based on any extraordinary hero powers in the game, as you pick up the lore you can adapt to suit your style.

Also check out the [RP Linkskell & Free Company Lists for Balmung] for things that suit you. A Linkshell is like an in game chat channel and you can have 8, and a Free Company is like a Guild. (edit - assuming you are on the Balmung server)

Faction wise there is only one faction and every one can speak to each other. The only difference to this is the PvP setup which all takes place in instances (no open world pvp) and restricts in game chat when you are there. There are three main PvP factions called Grand Companies, each aligned to the three main cities. You pick one of these Grand Companies as you level, and it provides extra quests etc.. (PvP is just a small part of a Grand Company).

Thank you so much for the wonderful information!

Currently we do not have a server and I've been told it can be difficult to get to the main rp server initially, so we may have to start on another and transfer over. Â We have a few friends who play and are rp'ers who will help us start out.

For now we are keeping the characters simple. Â No tragic horrible background, or anything of notable importance to avoid issues, and we're leaving background/history a mostly blank space to fill in later once we know more. Â For now we are just working on the personalities. Â Our friend is referring us so we're waiting till pay day because I really really want the fat chocobo so badly... omg it's cute.

We'll take time to read through as much as we can in the meantime.

I don't know if I'm just missing it, but is there a section for character profiles?
I've been doing some reading and so far it's been very helpful. Â I still don't know a few things such as the life-span of the Au Ra... Â Seems most races have the general life-span of 60-100 depending on health/situation. Â I assume the Au Ra are the same. Â And the actual date the game is currently at (Like what year is this? Â So I can figure out a Date of Birth for my character)

Also are there any weekly meet ups? (Like a tavern night) where one could sort of test the waters? Â I'm worried about trying to jump in and people getting mad at me for accidentally lore-breaking or not understanding since I'm so new.... Â It's pretty much my biggest fear about starting over in a new community. Â

I decided to play as a more meek and sheltered character to explain my IC lack of knowledge with the world, so hopefully I can learn more through rping as her.

As far as we know, Au Ra have a similar lifespan as other races. So between 80-100 years max lifespan give or take, but most would live shorter lives because of war, poor living conditions, etc.

Okay, years are complicated. Every time an Era changes, the calendar years reset to Year 1. So the game in Heavensward starts during the 1st Year of the Seventh Astral Era. Before the Seventh Astral, there were 5 Years of the Seventh Umbral Era between now and the final Year of the Sixth Astral Era, which was the Year 1572. When determining the birth year of your character, it's helpful to subtract your intended age from 1577 to get your birth year. That said, the Year 1577 does not exist, it's just a helpful way to think about aging. So for example, my character is 31/32 years old, her birth year is Year 1546 of the Sixth Astral Era.

Thank you so much! Â I was intending for my character to be about 24-25. Â So I'll try and work it out that way.

I'm so excited. It just sucks I wont be able to start on the main Rp server, but I'll transfer over as soon as I can. I have some friends there so that rules out the other servers.
