I sometimes worry what folk think of my alt when I'm running around on him... I swear, I just named him K'thalen Nunh because he was nunh before he died! And... I didn't wanna run around on a character perpetually named... something vague and unassuming like "Unknown Miqo'te" or whatever. xD Hopefully folk remember not to metagame that knowledge and don't judge me as a poor roleplayer for it. D:

Yep, that's my read on it as well. Nunh who leave their tribes get replaced, I would think, since they're not there to defend against a challenge. The natural conclusion to draw from that is that nunh adventurers aren't actually nunh in their tribes. I would also conjecture that there's probably some pretty major social repercussions for leaving your tribe and your duty -- the duty you fought to get -- for what might be seen as a life of excess and luxury.

The whole element of sub-tribes (aka hunting grounds/territories/septs/etc.) is an important bit of the lore that enables us to have our own tribal backgrounds. Combined with the fact that Eorzea is larger than is depicted in game, that enables any player to come up with their own, ahem, "territory" in the grey area that is miqo'te lore. Smile

A squicky evil bastard nunh can coexist in the same tribe as an awesome, caring, dashing nunh, since they can be in different territories far from each other, yet still be part of the same tribe. There's all kinds of interesting RP that can come from that, from "your actions prove you not a true Coeurl, you bastard!" to "you've forgotten the name of your father!" or even "we must band together to cull the evil from the territory of that nunh!"
