Along these same lines, I've been kind of wanting to play my goblin character in Eorzea, but in the context of being a Lalafell. They seem to have a fairly enterprising nature, judging by the Lala I see around Ul'dah. I don't think having one be a greedy little jerk is too far off the mark.

I just have to come up with a whole new backstory, since, well... He can't really come from a volcano-wrecked island of pollution-spewing engineers.

He could come from a run down part of the Garlean Empire? Might that be close?

Have you seen Iron Lake? There are definitely regions of La Noscea that qualify as volcano-wrecked and inhabited by pollution-spewing engineers. Of course, said engineers are kobolds.

But hey- a backstory involving kobolds could potentially be really interesting.
