I've been thinking of just installing a chat room right here on the RPC's server. However, I don't really know squat about chat rooms and I have a feeling it would cost money to do so properly.

Also, I'm pretty sure the chat right now is OOC. I could be mistaken though.

It is OOC. I think you do have to pay to get a chatserver up and running for your site if you want it very streamlined. However they do make free Chat setups: http://www.everywherechat.com

You could always do what we did and embed a mibbit client on the site that links people directly to the IRC room. That way people can chat from the site or through their own client as they wish, and it is REALLY easy to set up and free.

That's something I could probably look into. At the very least I can add a link under the Links section of the site to the IRC room.

Is there a way to connect to irc without downloading anything? Or are there any chat programs like adium or digsby that will do it?

OK I highly suggest that we move the RPC chat room over to Vanachat. It will make easier for people to find us, and no one has to download anything to use the room.

Vanachat was set up to be a big IRC community for FFXI and now FFXIV players and groups are free to set up their own rooms. Once you do, it will be visible on that menu there (unless you set it up to be hidden so you don't get random people wandering in, but the RPC might actually benefit from that).

If a room is decided upon on vanachat, let me know and I'll update the sticky (and Nettalk). But I would prefer keeping to vanachat as well, if possible.

Mibbit. http://chat.mibbit.com has webchat that allows you to engage in irc within your browser. *uses it at work* >>

Select 'server' and enter irc.webchat.org
Change your nick.
Under 'channel' enter #FF14rpchat

You're good to go!

Yeah but the thing about using vanachat (which also works in mibbit like you described) is that it allows for us to be part of the FFXIV broader community, which was one of our goals when creating the RPC I believe. I dunno it just makes it easier for people who already use vanachat for other channels (the beta channel, linkshell channels, Eorzea channel, etc.) to participate without having to log in to a second server constantly and register a nick with a different server as well. Plus it puts us right there in the list of FFXIV communities where everyone can see us. Let's stop being antisocial and play nicely with the other FFXIV kids! :O

Until someone sets up vanachat and all of us slog over there, though, mibbit works nicely. Wink

I agree that this is better. All the guilds may benefit from potential recruits stopping in. Going to update the sticky to reflect the new info.
