Likelihood may vary. Best of luck there! (I'd try between 2-6AM PST weekdays for the most success, or just before the 2.5 patch).
The transfer is nearly instant. Before official name changes, I did the server hop method to namechange via conflict. I was able to play immediately, but there's a 72 hour "you can't move this character again" limit imposed to prevent people from say, buying al lth items on one server, and selling them on another. Do note: there are transfer limits for gil. If you're rich, Â do be aware not all of it may transfer. (In which case, buy expensive items and resell them here to make up the cost. It's not pretty, but it works. [also have a balmung person price check for you])
Optional items? Like the Moogle letters, dyes and whatnot? Yes! Retainers? Also yes! Once transferred, you'll want to go check up with a Retainer Vocate to make sure they made the trip, if you're paying for a 3rd or 4th retainer.
