If you talk to the guy that lets you leave the area you get stuck in before Ifrit, he requests that you form a rescue party. You then get to leave the area and go back to the surface. Titan the WoL is technically by himself, however it does state that Titan was defeated before by non-WoLs and a loooooot of them using the exact same method the WoL uses to get there.  Garuda was done solo but you don't even beat her.
