Everwatch Monthly Update VII (April '12)

Big shake ups in little Everwatch

Hello everyone out there, this is Nel Arthura Celestine Turuphant over at the Everwatch with this month’s report from March to April! There were a lot of ups and downs for us here in the Twelvewoods. A number of positions changed, a few new members and not to mention a rather hard hitting event as well as a fashion show and more! We also had some rather intense run-ins with the Vultures, a group of poachers who claim they are better then the rest of the woods and want to subjugate Gridania.

First off, we’ve had some ‘promotions’ in the company. I was moved from Lead Scout to Trainer. As much as I will miss the role, I feel we need a dedicated trainer to help make the Watch stronger... even if Nel thinks it’s Oskar’s way of keeping her off the battlefield because she’s with child.

Kailee has been promoted to defensive coordinator due to her knowledge and application of tactics several times over already. We’re looking forward to seeing more of her in action and I’m sure you all will be too.

There was a story telling night lead by our lovely Eva early in the month. It wasn’t as a big a turnout as we had hoped due to the Garlean assault outside the city. Perhaps it was a well thought out plan on their behalf...

We also celebrated the Everwatch’s mid-cycle anniversary! There was food, drink, dancing and much fun! Even the fane got in with a wonderful jib at the amount of times we have members ending up there.

That leaves us with the training of the month. There were two types of training. One from me which I will deem ‘official’ and one from Eva which I will deem ‘surprise.’ Without realizing it however, the first official and the surprise were rather close to each other in basic concept. However the messages behind them were very different.

While my training was meant to inform participants to watch their surroundings for traps instead of rushing in head first. Afterwards, training has taken a more teamwork and spiritual form. Including forging of personal training weapons and team based obstacle courses in which everyone was loaded with weights. At first, the training was meant to condition the mind and the body, but after the first two sessions Nel had come to realize that more in-depth and personalized training will be required for each member as well as the team as a whole. Unity, respect, loyalty and camaraderie are the values of the Everwatch that Nel will be seeking to instill in the coming Moons.

Then there was the ‘surprise’ training. Most of the Everwatch were uninformed of this both IC and OOC, and what started as a normal mission to attack the Vultures in their hide out, little did we know it was all a set up by our very own Archonte Eva!

We arrived on the scene to see a body wearing Oskar’s jacket. It was that smell that kept Nel from knowing what was really going down. We were hit with paralysis gas, disarmed and dragged into the cave where we were beaten, stabbed and insulted. Then they were going to kill Manari so Eva took her place and was killed in front of us.

Then we were left to rot in the cave when Rhio showed up to free us. Most of us were in shock so Nel took command. With Oskar and Eva both apparently dead and Syesta badly injured Nel called for a full retreat and investigation into what happened. However we didn’t have to wait long as Eva returned and informed us all of what happened and that the actors were members of Corvus Cinis!

[Image: ffxivgame2012-04-1423-24-54-81-Copy.jpg]

I’ll have to pick Eva’s brain for more training ideas like that one.

We also have an In Character chronicle from our new scribe Selene! It’s a lot like these monthly reports here, but all done as I mentioned In Character and are free to view at our office headquarters. Here is a link to them on the forums, please read and support this venture weekly!

We also want to take this moment to mention the passing of a very important character with a rich history. Dytirum, Eva’s father, passed away recently. He was an important individual from XI RP community and it was a sad and moving moment to see him retired. He will be missed by many of characters who have had a chance to meet him in this game. Everwatch is preparing to hold a vigil in his name.

Onto the fashion show! We, the Everwatch were picked to represent Elza Mavanix as team Avalon in a fashion battle extraordinaire! There was some foul play on the other team but not by choice. The designers were cheating using something called “Formula V” to influence the judges. In the spirit of fair play however, once the judges hear about the perfume it was brought over to our side where we refused to use it. If Everwatch couldn’t win on our own merits, then we weren’t going to win at all. Seemed like the other side agreed and we had a fair show afterwards. We, of course, sweeped the remaining two rounds for the win. Congratulations to Syesta and Selene and myself (campy I know!) for winning the show and doing it fair and square!

Since then we’ve had two encounters with the Vultures. The first was an secure and protect mission in which we were to capture Magitek before the Vultures. We managed to secure several pieces before being forced to retreat with some injures. We also encountered them running an Aether jammer out of the Tam-Tara Deepcroft preventing safe aetherial travel. We shut them down and everyone made it out without injury, save a few member’s pride and a valuable treasure left buried under a heap of rubble.

Monthly Mentions

Poll of the month: ‘How often do you think we should do Endgame IC events?’ was the poll this month. With all the new content coming out and some of the old left untouched I thought what better time then to start planning some IC endgame!

Poll Results were:
Six votes for Once a Week
One vote for Twice a Week

Looks like the results are in! Overwhelming landslide victory for once a week, and I have a good idea on how to implement this as well. Advanced Training nights, featuring your latest dungeons and greatest foes! Look forward to hearing more about this in the future!

Title: Report Analyzing Opportunity for Improvement After Hostage Scenario
Name: Eva Z. Ianeira
Date: 3rd Sun; 2nd Umbral Moon
____________________________________________________________

Details:

Scenario: Arrival at Camp Solitude after hearing what sounded like a cry for help from Oskar and another woman's voice. Oskar was found to be bound and gagged and a masked miqo'te stood over him with a blade to his neck and demanded gil and safe passage from the Twelveswood in exchange for his life.

Objective: Create three alternative methods of approaching this scenario which may have yielded more promising results.

  • Stop and observe - Given the situation and the urgency involved, I felt time was of the essence and admittedly led all of us into a trap based upon an emotional knee-jerk reaction. Had I stopped and taken the time to analyze the situation more fully, I may have observed and interpreted Oskar's signals more clearly, I may have foreseen that traps were laid about, and I may not have placed the lives of my companions in jeopardy. I feel that the principal reason for my failure is that I did not look before I leapt. There was an opportunity to negotiate a ransom and buy additional time to survey the area and see if additional poachers could be located. This time was not utilized to its fullest.

  • Stay together - Until there was enough evidence that no other poachers lay in waiting, I firmly feel it was best to keep our troop together and not arouse the enemy's suspicion. Was the poacher to note one of our number moving to flank, she may have abandoned her plans and taken the hostage's life. In this I feel I acted properly in spite of the outcome and would not have changed that, however it was folly of me to separate myself from the others by running to Oskar's aid and thus falling into the pit. Upon reflection, had I remained back and utilized a more ranged means of attack such as aetherially channeling water magic, the outcome may have turned to our favor.

  • Neutralize the threat first and foremost - While there was some concern that there may be more than one poacher (see list of observations below), once the attack began and no others appeared it should have been clear that there was only one target, and she should have been neutralized before any rescue attempt was made. I rushed in to help Oskar thinking he had more familiarity with the situation or knew some way to help. Instead, I should have focused my energy on helping Kailee and Rhapsody remove the threat.[/list:u]

    Additional Observations:
    • Oskar was signaling at the ground where the pit was located.
    • It seemed unlikely that one miqo'te acting alone could subdue and bind Oskar.
    • It further seemed unlikely that she was acting alone given her haughty demeanor.
    • A closer survey of the terrain may have revealed the trap(s).[/list:u]

Conclusion: I know there were opportunities for improvement with the way this scenario was approached. I don't necessarily agree that there is any one surefire method that would have worked, without having much more advance knowledge of the terrain. While I feel we should be properly equipped to handle a certain element of surprise, I must admit it feels like the cards were stacked against us on this. I understand Miss Rhapsody feels her approach may have been more appropriate, and given the way things unfolded she may be correct. But aside from my initial impulsive reaction, I feel things were handled about as well as they could have. And aside from the above three changes, I stand by the decisions that were made. And while I was somewhat unclear on what happened after I fell into the pit trap, if Miss Kailee made any command decisions in my absence, I feel this was appropriate and that she should be commended on her initiative. She has more tenure with the Watch than Miss Rhapsody and exhibited a willingness to take the reins when the situation demanded it, regardless of the outcome.

      • Sketched map of Camp Solitude, including markers indicating relative locations of each participant in the exercise as well as locations of the known traps.
      • Written apology to Oskar Helvig for letting down both him and the Watch (not included in Nel's copy)[/list:u]

Very detailed report from Eva, outlining a training that went awry. The neat outline and a clear thought given to each point makes this report stand out. It’s Eva, what did you expect?

Journal of the month: This month’s journal entry is none other than our own Selene!

Show Content
SpoilerThere is a marked absence of doodles in this entry. Where there are usually drawings or small sketches there are only tickmarks on the page. They don’t even appear to be designs, simply marks to occupy a hand while the mind is engaged in thought.

By Halone, my muscles ache. The pace of life continues to be unrelenting here in Gridania. I long for an hour to be able to sit down with a book again, but such is not meant to be. Conversely I do feel like I am doing good here, more so than I would be by spending all my waking hours by myself.

I was able to find a suitable place of lodging this morning! I won’t be able to take residence for a few days as there is a great deal of paperwork to be done yet, but I will soon be out of the Inn. I suppose the next step is to consider furnishings… I was only able to bring what I could carry on my back from Limsa.

Today the Everwatch held a bit of a training session. From what I could gather, this will be a regular thing, an idea that I relish. My somewhat infrequent training schedule in Limsa prevented me from ever really becoming great at handling my sword… it certainly didn’t help me become physically strong. I was more inclined to stay home with a book than go and pump iron or practice elsewhere. Scuffles with sailors and drunkards tended to end in fisticuffs more often than swordplay.

Apparently the Watch uses special weapons for these training sessions, and Nel guided Kailee and I in a swordmaking session. I must admit, it was a fascinating experience! I’ve had my hand in almost every aspect of the arts; I’ve performed music and drawn art and written stories that I’ve never had the guts to share, but holding that hammer and shaping that metal was a foreign experience. And even though my first attempt ended in failure, there was an almost ethereal beauty to the whole thing. When I finally held aloft a blade that *I created*, there was a great sense of satisfaction. This is a weapon that could end a life or protect one, and it came into existence through my own machinations. Perhaps I shall pick up the hammer again soon and explore this new aspect of the arts. My first task will be to reforge this training sword… it is far too unwieldy and off balance to be a decent weapon, even for attacking logs.

Nel had us all fill packs with weights and run through the Shroud on a path she laid out with training dummies scattered throughout. I initially picked up less than I thought I could handle, but a stern word from Isilme had me scurrying for more.

Oh, Isilme. What power! I’d never seen someone lift so much and still be able to run! The sailors and shiphands were muscular, to be sure, but they were all show compared to her. I want to be like that… and the way she handled a sword! Oh, it was stunning! I must see if I can convince her to teach me… whenever we encountered a new training dummy she was more than willing to lend her insight to Manari or one of the others. Isilme may make an excellent role model for me; there haven’t been too many in my life that I would want to emulate. Hopefully one day I will be able to stand next to her as an equal in battle.

IMMEDIATELY after the training, we dropped our weights and hustled back to Gridania to practice for the fashion show, without even an opportunity to stretch out our weary muscles. I had only intended on watching; I know next to nothing about fashion, but I guess that I stood too close to Oskar while he was looking for volunteers and somehow I got roped into being a fashion model.

A fashion model?! Me? How did this happen? Never in a thousand suns would I ever have thought that I would be on stage, parading around in front of dozens of strangers in unfamiliar garb. It is an uncomfortable feeling. When I would take the stage as a young girl, it was always to perform my music. The focus was on my instrument, or my talent, not on my body, and I am somewhat uncomfortable with this thought; I am rather plain, I feel. I am sure this was evident when I took a practice walk across the stage. I probably looked so foolish up there, walking with such determined purpose and stiffness. Stupid Selene! Nobody wants to see a plank of wood parading around! I need to loosen up. Perhaps I shall return to the Ampitheatre tomorrow and practice… maybe with some more time spent up on the stage I will gain a small level of comfort. One of the girls likened the posing to combat, and I wish I had thought of that. It might have made the whole ordeal easier. I don’t even know if I should take the clothes afterward like everyone is offering… they will only sit in my trunk, collecting dust.

A dividing line is drawn here, perhaps to indicate a change of thought, perhaps to show that what follows was written at a later date

I wonder if my stomach is becoming used to air travel, or if the shorter trip between Gridania and Ul’Dah helped prevent me from becoming sick. I would rather have stayed in the Shroud and conducted all of my business by mail or pearl, but unfortunately this was not such a case. The process of moving all of my mercenary work out of Limsa left some of my relations in Ul’Dah strained, and I needed to go visit Redrick to smooth things over. A few drinks at the pub was all it took to explain that my services had not changed, merely my location, and that I would still gladly swing my sword for him with whatever he needed, current duties permitted. I accidentally mentioned that I was “in Ul’Dah to see a man” to Oskar, and either he misinterpreted it or was intentionally trying to tease me. Not that there’s anything wrong with what he was implying, but the assertion did catch me off guard, and I beat a hasty, apologetic retreat to the inn. The hours of training and travel did not mix well with a belly full of ale; and I feared that a return trip to Gridania that same eve would have ended in disaster for everyone. I am staying in Ul’Dah tonight at the inn, and I pray that when I awaken there will not be sand in my boots.

One of many journals since she joined, all have something which draws the reader in. This one in particular is full of rich detail and inner thoughts of her character, thoughts we do not typically see like this in-game. She was very uncomfortable leading up to the fashion show event, so we all waiting with anticipation for what she will write about it in her little journal. As a sidenote, check out out Selene’s complimentary in-character artwork that accompanies these entries!

A Look Forward

With the future coming fast for our company one can only hope that Nymeia takes kind on us all to keep us safe from harm with these Vultures, Garleans, Primals and other worse things out there. Just remember to keep us in your thoughts and feel free to send us a tell. We won’t bite unless it’s dinner!
