Oh man, that lovely lovely Greek food. That sounds amazing. Of course, all the Greeks I knew were Jehovah's Witnesses and didn't celebrate Easter.
Growing up like that makes holidays plenty awkward for me, especially when there's so much family focus. There's a truce in my family between the Jehovah's Witnesses and the non-JWs, but holidays make the rift apparent to us. Even if we fold and manage to see each other on days like this, we never dare bring up the elephant in the room. It saddens me that something that should unite families has become something so divisive in mine.
I don't really know why I'm writing this. I guess I'm just feeling a bit melancholic on an Easter morning, thinking about the things I had to let go of to get where I am today. The many Cadbury creme eggs I will no doubt eat today will taste all the sweeter when I think about what they represent. I made a choice. I've been raked over coals for it. I am free.
Whatever else the holidays actually mean, that's what they mean to me.
