I'm a Medical Laboratory Scientist (the Bachelor's degree kind). You know, that medical profession no one has heard of but is involved in about 70-80% of all medical decisions?
I work in an independent reference laboratory in the Microbiology department. Our lab services a lot of small hospitals in the area as well as retirement homes and clinics. Basically, if your doctor takes a swab or sample to look for infection, I get that swab and we culture it, and identify what's causing the infection. We also do antibiotic susceptibility testing, which helps the doctor know how to treat the infection.
It's a great career.
