The Sunny Seaside Bar IX: DODGEBALL
We're gettin' this out t' ye wonderful folks a little later than we'd normally like to, but we wanted t' make sure that when we took this thing live, we 'ad it nailed down fer the smoothest experience we could give.
An' know what? After some extensive testin', no small amount'ah blood, sweat, an' tears (An' bruises. Lotsa bruises.), ah think we've gone an' got it, an so...
S' the great pleasure of Jackal an' Hide t' say that, this week, we'll be 'ostin' the first ever (That we know of) Eorzean Dodgeball tournament. Wha's dodgeball? No idea, weren't me that came up with the name, s' somethin' we use t' play back in the tribe t' perfect our aim an' agilty.
(Ah kinda sucked at the agility part, but that ain't nether 'ere nor there.)
F' those so inclined t' partake in a li'l bit'ah good-natured fun an' rivalry, we're gonna be runnin' this down on the beach t'night, away from the bar f' those that ain't that way inclined.
We'll be goin' over it on the night, 'bout what's expected, so don't worry 'bout not knowin' what ye need t' do. A few'ah the Jackal's should be on 'and t' give a demonstration an' all.
That's all there is to it this time! We rather hope to see faces old and new this week for the show, so...
See you there!

Right! Where to begin with this...
J&H have been testing out various rulesets and playstyles for this for a while now, and after some extensive testing, we're pretty confident we've got this nailed now. A little bit of reading is required for anyone who's interested in this, but having played or spectated all the games now... It's SO worth it :3 Everyone's who's partaken has loved it. We even had a couple of folks turn up from another FC to play the first time. They seemed to have a great time too!
What you need to know (How it plays out):
Unlike real Dodgeball, the balls aren't lined up in the middle for both teams to charge down and claim. Â Two teams will be selected from nominated captains, and the captains get to draw straws. Â Longest straw throws first!
Also unlike real Dodgeball, it's not a chaotic free-for-all of throwing, teams take it in turns (We're assuming that each side hordes the balls until the other team has nothing left to give). Â Captains direct their troops call out who's throwing, and in what order.
The winning team is the one that has people reaming, standing tall to bask in their glory.
What you need to know (How to play, the basics):
1) Two teams, each with a leader, with as even a split as we can manage.
2) Three (Give or take, dependant on numbers) 'balls' (Inflated boar bladders). The nominated captains use /random to determine who throws, and the team with the highest random starts. Â Captains nominate who throws each round.
3) The nominated pick their target, and throw! (Emote your throw, and who you're throwing at, then /random.)
4) The target tries to dodge! (/random. Â If your roll is higher than that of the throw, you dodge! Â Lower, you're hit. Â Emote accordingly.)
5) Once one team completes their throws, the balls are gathered up for the return fire. (Teams take it in turns to throw/dodge)
What you need to know (How to play, the advanced stuff):
Crits! Â Critical hits/misses are a thing here. Â A roll of 1 - 50 is a critical failure, and 950 - 999 being a critical hit. Â What do they do? Â Details below.
Throwing:
Critical failure (1 - 50): Â Oops! Â Your target catches the ball! Â You're out, and the defending team can bring on an eliminated player.
Critical hit (950 - 999): Â HEADSHOT! Â The player is eliminated. Â Not only that, but your throw was such a fine example of execution SPORTS! that the ball rebounded straight back into your waiting hands. Â Throw again!
Dodging:
Critical failure (1 - 50): Â Disaster! Â Not only did the ball hit you, but it hit at such an angle that it deflected into the player nearest you. Â They need to roll to dodge against the same throw that took you out, too.
Critical hit (950 - 999): Â Yeah, you're good. Â You totally called their throw, and catch it with ease. Â The player who threw it is out, and your team brings on an elimintated player.
What you don't really need to know (The optionals):
Modifiers! Â Not everyone was made equal. Â Some of us are, in fact, quite naff at physical sports and exercise, while others are Gods amongst mortals, with bodies that glisten with golden droplets of sweat, and gallons of rare oils smeared on by their devoted fans.
This is reflected with the optional modifier system down below. Â How do they work? Â Take a look below!
First, be honest. Â Is your character an absolute beast of a Roe? Â Are they a Highlander that grinds rocks to dust with their bare hands? Â Or are they a scholarly sort who spends the majority of their time huddled over a book? Â Think about whether they'd have a bonus or a penalty to either their throwing or dodging.
Decided? Â Good.
Now, pick a number up to 100 and add or subtract it to your throw rolls.
Then, half that number. Â If you added to your throw or dodge, subtract that halved number from the other stat.
If you chose a penalty and subtracted from either your throw or dodge, then half that number, and add it to the other stat.
Sound confusing? Â Have some examples.
Kilid is quite a strong fellow. Â Not the strongest, but still... strong. Â He has +75 to his throws, but as a consequence, -38 to his dodge (We round up to the greater number, no cheating!)
A large, burly Roe or Highlander might decide to add +100 to their throw. Â As a consequence, they'd take -50 to their dodge.
A smaller Lalafell who's quite active and energetic, or a well-practiced Miqo hunter might decide they're quite athletic, and add +50 to their dodge. Â They'd suffer -25 to their throws.
A scholarly Elezen or Lala might be honest, and accept that they'd rather suck at this sort of thing, as fun as it might be, and take -100 to their throws. Â They'd gain +50 to dodge.
Or, you could decide that you're a pretty balanced person, and leave it as +/- 0 all round.
How do the mods impact play? Â After your /random, we manually add or subtract the numbers in our heads. Â It's great practice for on-the-fly maths for yours truly!
One thing to note is that your mods can't/won't trigger a critical. Â We tried having that, and found that crits were happening all over the place! Â It got... crazy.
One other thing to note, is that yes, if you take a bonus, you have to take a penalty (And vice-versa). Â It keeps things somewhat balanced.
Post below or PM me if you decide to take a modifier, and I'll make a note on our company doc for easy reference.
It's a lot to take in, we know. Â However, worth it. Â So, so, SO worth it! Â J&H will be on hand to throw a few rounds if people want to see it in action. Â We're... excited about this, and hope to see a few people here tonight to give this a shot.
If it's as popular outside the FC as it is inside, we might see about setting up a proper inter-FC tournament further on down the line. (With, of course, space for teams of mixed and non-FC people, too!)
Really hope to see people there tonight!
