For once, the Inquisitor's warm confidence was beginning to cool. "I will ask once more. What. Are. You doing amongst the citizens of the Brume?"
Steel's face never changed expression, just as it hadn't the prior six times she was asked. "I am here on behalf of the Maelstrom of Limsa Lominsa on a private matter. You may send word to my superiors if you wish to be included in the investigation."
The old Elezen's brow creased. All sense of candor was bled from his face as the Roegadyn woman stood firm before him, feet shoulder-width apart, ironed wrists set before her like a statue. Her golden eyes seared fire in to his. A dark smirk played upon the corner of his mouth. His mind was made up.
"Very well. If you truly believe yourself above the jurisdiction of the Knights Most Holy, then I will ensure that the good Admiral Bloefyswyn is informed that one among her Grand Company saw fit to ignore the law of this land and take matters into her own. And then I shall see you in gaol for undertaking mercenary work without being cleared by our official channels. And I will ensure that these 'superiors' of yours are informed that you have assaulted one of my Knights in the process of disobeying the sovereignty of Ishgard and her Laws."
Steel responded with a smile that matched his own, carrying a dark fire that almost unseated the Inquisitor from his tirade.
"...a crime which you shall now carry your sentence. As I am bourne witness to the acts which you have committed, I hereby sentence you to a period of five years in gaol for unprovoked attack of a Knight of the Holy See."
The Inquisitor waved his hand dismissively, his robe's sleeve fluttering with the passing of his judgement. The two guards pulled on the Roegadyn's arms, but she would not move. She continued to stare fiery daggers in to the old man until she let herself be turned away and led out of the interrogation chamber.
There was a long walk and increasing amounts of darkness before Steel was led to an open cell. In her face was blank ambivalence, but in her mind were whirring gears. She recalled the directions they took to lead to her cell. Recalled the shape of the stones in the walls, realizing that several of them were familiar--a distraction to make her lose her way should she attempt escape. The had turned eight or nine times when the cell was only three turns away.
She also fixated on the wording of the sentence. Unprovoked assault.
The guard had struck her first.
Her only hope, should she face a means to oppose the charges, is that the Inquisitor was thorough in his arrest report, mentioning in full detail the events of her interrogation without omitting details. There could be a way out through talk...but her tensed muscles never eased in case action was required.
