If I don't just ask directly, I will talk about my characters or ideas and bounce them off people before doing them, then gauge their reactions or ask for opinions. If all seems well from there, I go ahead and do it. No bad reactions in practice? Good. All is well. Yes? Ask people where the problem is and how it may best be improved.
