With regards to Lore: The best thing you can do is try. And when rping with new people don't be afraid to shoot them a tell and let them know you may not understand the lore perfectly and don't mind them shooting you advice.
I've noticed a lot of the people who are really lore heavy love to teach others as well, because who wouldn't?
