Point him towards this Gladiator lore post!

The 2.0 questline for Gladiator does an absolutely AWFUL job at showcasing what it means to be a Bloodsands Gladiator in Ul'dah. Ul'dah's gladiators are actually very influenced by the roman coliseum style matches with men vs beasts, men vs slaves, etc! There are even prison fighters or slave fighters called Noxius.
