People in this setting are religious. Because magic exists. Whereas folk from Othard do not have the Twelve, they got their own gods. The Dusk Father and the Dusk Mother for the Xaela and Raen respectively. And the Domans seem to praise all things surrounding them.
So making a char /not/ religious is rather odd. It's valid, but they would be more the exception but the norm.
That said...
I don't think running around in Garlean outfit + not believing they are a real soldier is something what would happen... But that is totally up to you.
Ah hells, that was actually a typo (and why I should not write things at 7-8am with no coffee). They believed he WAS a soldier, thus why he was thrown in the Bloodsands.
As for him not being religious, it is because he is--- kinda upset with the Moon Goddess. He was taught the ways of his people, but he feels abandoned by her and so, in anger, he ignores those teachings; Maybe one day this will change!
I will fix that typo though!
