Like your situation I have only the most basic of a basic outline figured out for my character, who essentially is just a wannabe archaeologist looking for other people interested in the search of artifacts, adventure, knowledge, and yes, treasure. I haven't even found a linkshell or FC yet. As for getting on Balmung, just keep trying! I'm sure you'll get in soon!
