There are different ways of dealing with this.  IC they left to deal with something and for some reason you couldn't go.  Ask for a IC explanation from them.  Last is IC you don't know where they went.  Throwing a character away isn't the best option as you can end up feeling like something you lost something and lost a lot of time.
