You will need crafting materials, which you can gather if you like. I did about 12 levels in each of the gathering professions before I started crafting, so I had a full inventory tab of materials. However, I hear that the provisioner for each guild offers everything you need to buy in terms of crafting materials to reach level 15-20 without ever picking up a pickaxe or hatchet.
